Farliga förbindelser: Betydelsen av vänskap, status och suveränitet i diskussioner om svensk allianspolitik 1680–1683

The present study examines the discussions about alliance policy in the Swedish council of the realm 1680-1683. Taking issue with earlier research that has portrayed the Swedish foreign policy during this period in realist terms, the study instead uses the concepts of friendship, status and sovereignty to give context to the arguments used by the council when discussing alliance partners. Regardin

Sex, Love and Moral Control: Exploring the effectiveness and limitations of international and regional human rights law relevant to SOGIESC diverse groups in the quest to invalidate Zimbabwe’s “sodomy” law

“Only in the most technical sense is this a case about who may penetrate whom where. At a practical and symbolical level it is about the status, moral citizenship and sense of self-worth of a significant section of the community.” Justice Albie Sachs, National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality and Another v Minister of Justice and Others 1999 (1) SA 6, para. 107 More than 70 years after th

The pianistic learning at the Swedish Municipal School of Music and Culture – seeking balance between musical expression and piano technique. How is it possible to design the learning of piano to piano students at the Swedish municipal school of music and culture? This question is central for this paper with the purpose to study piano pedagogues’ thoughts on requisite components for achievi

The alpha(7)beta(0) Isoform of the Complement Regulator C4b-Binding Protein Induces a Semimature, Anti-Inflammatory State in Dendritic Cells

The classical pathway complement regulator C4b-binding protein (C4BP) is composed of two polypeptides (alpha- and beta-chains), which form three plasma oligomers with different subunit compositions (alpha(7)beta(1), alpha(7)beta(0), and alpha(6)beta(1)). We show in this article that the C4BP alpha(7)beta(0) isoform (hereafter called C4BP[beta(-)] [C4BP lacking the beta-chain]), overexpressed under

The Sulphur Threat To The 17th Century Warship Vasa

The royal warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. She was discovered in 1956 and in 1961, after 333 years at the bottom of the sea in the Stockholm harbour she was salvaged. Vasa, built mainly of oak, was one of the first major objects to be conserved with polyethylene glycol. She was sprayed continuously for 17 years followed by an 11 year long controlled drying procedure HBfors,[l]). In

Single-cell genomics of a bloom-forming phytoplankton species reveals population genetic structure across continents

The study of microbial diversity over time and space is fundamental to the understanding of their ecology and evolution. The underlying processes driving these patterns are not fully resolved but can be studied using population genetic approaches. Here we investigated the population genetic structure of Gonyostomum semen, a bloom-forming phytoplankton species, across two continents. The species ap

Inflammatory Animal Models of Parkinson's Disease

Accumulating evidence suggests that microglia and peripheral immune cells may play determinant roles in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Consequently, there is a need to take advantage of immune-related models of PD to study the potential contribution of microglia and peripheral immune cells to the degeneration of the nigrostriatal system and help develop potential therapies for PD. I

IRF4 Transcription-Factor-Dependent CD103(+)CD11b(+) Dendritic Cells Drive Mucosal T Helper 17 Cell Differentiation.

CD103(+)CD11b(+) dendritic cells (DCs) represent the major migratory DC population within the small intestinal lamina propria (SI-LP), but their in vivo function remains unclear. Here we demonstrate that intestinal CD103(+)CD11b(+) DC survival was dependent on interferon regulatory factor 4 (IRF4). Mice with a DC deletion in Irf4 displayed reduced numbers of intestinal interleukin 17 (IL-17)-secre

Strain-Distinct α-Synuclein and Tau Cross-Seeding Uncovered by Correlative Approach with Optical Photothermal Infrared Sub-Micron Imaging

The co-occurrence of α-synuclein (αSyn) and Tau in synucleinopathies and tauopathies suggests a complex interplay between these proteins. Their cross-seeding enhances fibrillization, leading to the formation of diverse amyloid-specific structures enriched with β-sheets, which may influence their biological functions. However, existing tools cannot differentiate structural polymorphs directly in ce

Pathogenesis and novel treatment against tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide. In 2023, it accounted for approximately 1.25 million deaths, including 161,000 among individuals living with HIV, making it the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. The growing prevalence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) further complicates treatment and contribu

We can only do it together: Addressing global sustainability challenges through a collaborative paradigm

Urgent structural change is required in higher education, to allow collaboration both within and across universities, so that achieving rapid sustainability transition can become not only the overarching but the main purpose of education, research and work in society. A review of the literature reveals that fragmentation caused by traditional hierarchical faculty and disciplinary organisation is a

Identification of two abundant Aerococcus urinae cell wall-anchored proteins

Aerococcus urinae is an emerging pathogen that causes urinary tract infections, bacteremia and infective endocarditis. The mechanisms through which A. urinae cause infection are largely unknown. The aims of this study were to describe the surface proteome of A. urinae and to analyse A. urinae genomes in search for genes encoding surface proteins. Two proteins, denoted Aerococcal surface protein (A

Hybridization, sex-specific genomic architecture and local adaptation

While gene flow can reduce the potential for local adaptation, hybridization may conversely provide genetic variation that increases the potential for local adaptation. Hybridization may also affect adaptation through altering sexual dimorphism and sexual conflict, but this remains largely unstudied. Here, we discuss how hybridization may affect sexual dimorphism and conflict due to differential e

Thermohaline mixing and the variation of [C/Fe] with magnitude in M3

We use observations of M3 to constrain thermohaline mixing. This is done by matching [C/Fe] and [N/Fe] along the RGB of M3. We find our models can explain observations if it is assumed there is a spread of ∼ 0.3 - 0.4 dex in [C/Fe] in the stars in M3 from their birth. We reproduce the full spread in [C/Fe] at the tip of the RGB. Thermohaline mixing can produce a significant change in [N/Fe] as a f

Comparing thermal performance curves across traits : how consistent are they?

Thermal performance curves (TPCs) are intended to approximate the relationship between temperature and fitness, and are commonly integrated into species distributional models for understanding climate change responses. However, TPCs may vary across traits because selection and environmental sensitivity (plasticity) differ across traits or because the timing and duration of the temperature exposure

FoxA1 directs the lineage and immunosuppressive properties of a novel regulatory T cell population in EAE and MS

The defective generation or function of regulatory T (T reg) cells in autoimmune disease contributes to chronic inflammation and tissue injury. We report the identification of FoxA1 as a transcription factor in T cells that, after ectopic expression, confers suppressive properties in a newly identified T reg cell population, herein called FoxA1 + T reg cells. FoxA1 bound to the Pdl1 promoter, indu

Prothrombin, albumin and immunoglobulin A form covalent complexes with alpha1-microglobulin in human plasma

Molecules containing the 33-kDa plasma protein alpha1-microglobulin were isolated from human plasma by anti-(alpha1-microglobulin) affinity chromatography. Five major bands could be seen after electrophoretic separation of the alpha1-microglobulin-containing proteins under native conditions. Immunoblotting demonstrated alpha1-microglobulin in all five bands. Two of these have been described previo

Sailing Along the Coast of North Etruria : Ancient Perceptions Versus Multidisciplinary Coastal Landscape Studies

Aim of this contribution is to demonstrate how digital methods, in combination with traditional sources, can effectively contribute to reconstruct a narrative of the past based on a sensory account of a few coastal landscapes in Northwestern Etruria as they were perceived and described by ancient authors. A few passages by Strabo (Geogr. 5.2.5, 222C, Augustan period) and Rutilius Namatianus (de re

Monocytes and Neutrophils in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a heterogenous inflammatory joint disease and the most commonrheumatic disease in children. Oligoarticular JIA (oJIA) is the major subgroup, which mainly affects fewand large joints, such as the knee. The immunological processes and key players driving inflammationwithin the affected joints are not well characterised. Research has primarily focused on adaptiv
