Liquid Crystal Phases in Suspensions of Charged Plate-Like Particles

Anisotropic interactions in colloidal suspensions have recently emerged as a route for the design of new soft materials. Nonisotropic particles can form nematic, smectic, hexatic, and columnar liquid crystals. Although the formation of these phases is well rationalized when excluded volume is solely at play, the role of electrostatic interactions still remains unclear and even less so when particl

Adsorption of methylamine on Ni3Al(111) and NiAl(110)-a high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory study

Methylamine adsorption on the ordered Ni3Al(111) and NiAl(110) surfaces has been investigated by high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Methylamine adsorbs molecularly at both surfaces at low temperature (90 K). The experiments show that methylamine interacts with the surface aluminium atoms on both surfaces, resulting in a positive binding energy sh

Re-evaluation of the conodont Iapetognathus and implications for the base of the Ordovician System GSSP

In 2000, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) ratified the decision from the International Working Group on the Cambrian–Ordovician Boundary (COBWG) to place the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Ordovician System in the Green Point section, Newfoundland, Canada, at a point coinciding with the first appearance of the conodont Iapetognathus flu

Multiculturalism, recognition and the "Kurdish question" in Turkey: the outline of a normative framework

Despite the ever-growing literature on various aspects of the Kurdish question in Turkey, there are practically no normative discussions of Kurdish demands for the public recognition of their identities. This is all the more startling given the ascendancy of philosophical accounts in the literature on minority rights. This article will try to redress the balance by proposing a normative framework

Bologna and Beyond: Opportunities and Obstacles

The Bologna process is a voluntary joint venture among 46 European countries, which has as its objective the creation of a European Higher Education Area (EHEA) by 2010. The EHEA will cover all of Europe including European Union newcomers Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Its aim is to allow for degrees and qualifications awarded in one country to be understood and recognized in

A framework for evaluating the influence of climate, dispersal limitation, and biotic interactions using fossil pollen associations across the late Quaternary

Environmental conditions, dispersal lags, and interactions among species are major factors structuring communities through time and across space. Ecologists have emphasized the importance of biotic interactions in determining local patterns of species association. In contrast, abiotic limits, dispersal limitation, and historical factors have commonly been invoked to explain community structure pat

Distribution of von Willebrand factor levels in young women with and without bleeding symptoms. Influence of ABO blood group and promoter haplotypes

The normal distribution of von Willebrand factor (VWF) levels is wide. Low levels are associated with bleeding symptoms and von Willebrand disease (VWD). We have recently described a high prevalence of bleeding symptoms in a whole age group of young females (n = 1,019) from Malmo, Sweden. It was the objective of the present study to evaluate the distribution of VWF levels in young females with or

The Organization of R&D - Sourcing Strategy, Financing and Relation to Trade

Popular Abstract in Swedish På lång sikt drivs ekonomisk tillväxt av teknisk utveckling. Dock är det så att resultaten från FoU – ny kunskap och ny tekniThis thesis deals with the organization of R&D from a micro perspective in order to get a better idea of how to generate economic growth in the long run. What kind of R&D policies should be promoted? This thesis contributes to the existing literature by investigating other data sets than before, by using more modern econometric techniques and by extending the investigated variables. Chapt

Risk of obesity in immigrants compared with Swedes in two deprived neighbourhoods

Background: Despite a strong social gradient in the prevalence of obesity, there is little scientific understanding of obesity in people settled in deprived neighbourhoods. Few studies are actually based on objectively measured data using random sampling of residents in deprived neighbourhoods. In addition, most studies use a crude measure, the body mass index, to estimate obesity. This is of conc

Xylose as a carrier for boron containing compounds.

A xylosylated carborane was synthesized by standard carbohydrate methodology and tested on normal HFL-1 cells as well as transformed T24 cells. The xylosylated carborane initiated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) synthesis in both cell lines and treatment with the carborane gave a pronounced translocation of proteoglycans to the nuclei of T24 cells. However, most of the boron-containing compounds were secr

Cross-spectrum and coherence function estimation using time-delayed Thomson multitapers

An idea is presented where multitapers are extracted from a known cross-spectrum and applied for estimation of the co- herence function. An important property of the extracted win- dows are the time-delay between left and right tapers. There- fore, time-delayed Thomson multitapers are also proposed as an approximation. Simulations are performed using differ- ent linear filters as well as disturbin

Physical Modeling and Control of Low Temperature Combustion in Engines

De förbränningskoncept som studeras i avhandlingen Physical ModelingThe topic of this thesis is model-based control of two combustion engine concepts, Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) and Partially Premixed Combustion (PPC), using physics-based models. The studied combustion concepts hold promise of reducing the emission levels and fuel consumption of internal combustion engines. A cycle-to-cycle model of HCCI, including heat losses to the cylinder

Effective secondary fracture prevention: implementation of a global benchmarking of clinical quality using the IOF Capture the FractureA (R) Best Practice Framework tool

Fracture Liaison Services are the best model to prevent secondary fractures. The International Osteoporosis Foundation developed a Best Practice Framework to provide a quality benchmark. After a year of implementation, we confirmed that a single framework with set criteria is able to benchmark services across healthcare systems worldwide. Introduction Despite evidence for the clinical effectivenes
