Tests for causality between integrated variables using asymptotic and bootstrap distributions: theory and application
Causality tests in the Granger's sense are increasingly applied in empirical research. Since the unit root revolution in time-series analysis, several modifications of tests for causality have been introduced in the literature. One of the recent developments is the Toda-Yamamoto modified Wald (MWALD) test, which is attractive due to its simple application, its absence of pre-testing distortions, a

Platelet concentrate increases bone ingrowth into porous hydroxyapatite
Platelets contain growth factors that are believed to stimulate early fracture repair. Autologous platelets can be sequestered, concentrated, and mixed with thrombin to yield a so-called autologous growth factor gel, which might enhance bone repair or bone graft incorporation. The effect of this platelet concentrate on total tissue and bone ingrowth into porous coralline hydroxyapatite was studied
Balance between surface complexation and surface phase transformation at the alumina/water interface
This paper synthesizes and expands on the results of a recent series of investigations aimed at characterizing the interactions of orthophosphate, phenylphosphonate, and clodronate ions with hydrous alumina surfaces. The paper shows that gamma-Al2O3 is a thermodynamically unstable substance in water, which undergoes a (surface) phase transformation into bayerite, beta-Al(OH)(3). Furthermore, it al
Expansion of the BioCyc collection of pathway/genome databases to 160 genomes
The BioCyc database collection is a set of 160 pathway/genome databases (PGDBs) for most eukaryotic and prokaryotic species whose genomes have been completely sequenced to date. Each PGDB in the BioCyc collection describes the genome and predicted metabolic network of a single organism, inferred from the MetaCyc database, which is a reference source on metabolic pathways from multiple organisms. I
Pre-penetration events in fungal parasitism of nematode eggs
The present investigation deals with the main factors involved in early infection of nematode eggs by fungal parasites. We studied the effect of hydrophobicity on appressorium formation by germlings of Pochonia rubescens (syn. Verticillium suchlasporium), P. chlamydosporia (syn. V. chlamydosporium) and Lecanicillium lecanii (syn. V. lecanii). Appressoria were frequently formed on hydrophobic surfa
Uncertainty in fatigue life prediction of structures subject to Gaussian loads
In this paper we shall concentrate on Gaussian (or close to Gaussian) loads acting on a structure. The goal is to compute a measure of risk for fatigue of a component during a specific time period and the so called "safety index" will be used to combine different types of uncertainties. The presented methodology can be applied in a more general situation of environmental loads which properties may
Male mating constraints affect mutual mate choice: prudent male courting and sperm-limited females.
Costs of sperm production may lead to prudence in male sperm allocation and also to male mate choice. Here, we develop a life history-based mutual mate choice model that takes into account the lost-opportunity costs for males from time out in sperm recovery and lets mate competition be determined by the prevailing mate choice strategies. We assume that high mating rate may potentially lead to sper

Nuclear delivery of macromolecules: barriers and carriers.
Recent evidence for efficient delivery of macromolecules, such as peptides and nucleic acids, from the cell exterior to the nucleus offers the interesting possibility of developing novel treatments directed at intranuclear targets. The findings should also stimulate the search for physiological ligands that utilize similar transport mechanisms to regulate pathobiological processes. Cytokines, grow
Proteinase 3 and CD177 are expressed on the plasma membrane of the same subset of neutrophils.
Proteinase 3 (PR3) is found in granules of all nentrophils but also on the plasma membrane of a subset of nentrophils (mPR3). CD177, another neutrophil protein, also displays a bimodal surface expression. In this study, we have investigated the coexpression of these two molecules, as well as the effect of cell activation on their surface expression. We can show that CD177 is expressed on the same
Alpha 1-antichymotrypsin production in PSA-producing cells is common in prostate cancer but rare in benign prostatic hyperplasia
OBJECTIVE. To investigate the distribution and production of alpha 1-antichymotrypsin (ACT) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in benign hyperplastic and malignant prostatic tissue, respectively. METHODS. Using monoclonal anti-ACT and anti-PSA IgGs for immunocytochemistry and alkaline phosphatase conjugated 30-mer oligodeoxynucleotide probes for nonradioactive in situ hybridization, tissue specim

Relative systemic availability of budesonide in patients with asthma after inhalation from two dry powder inhalers
Background: To improve dosing consistency and product features, budesonide inhalation powder delivered via a dry powder inhaler (DPI) (DPI-A* 200 mu g) was redesigned to include lactose, a newly shaped mouthpiece, and a new dose indicator (DPI-B dagger). Budesonide CPI-B is available in two strengths (90 mu g, 180 mu g). Objective: To compare the relative rate and extent of the systemic availabili
Social capital, the miniaturisation of community, traditionalism and first time acute myocardial infarction: A prospective cohort study in southern Sweden.
This longitudinal study investigates the impact of social participation, trust and the combinations of social participation and trust on the incidence of first time acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the population of Scania, southern Sweden. It is based on the cross-sectional 2000 public-health survey in Scania with a 59% participation rate and 13,604 participants, and prospective morbidity/mor
Combined rCBF and CSF biomarkers predict progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.
This study aimed to identify preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using measurements of both regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. Baseline rCBF assessments (133Xe method) were performed in 70 patients with MCI who were cognitively stable for 4–6 years, 69 patients with MCI who subsequently developed AD, and 3
Metaplastic columnar mucosa in the cervical esophagus after esophagectomy.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the pathogenesis of metaplastic processes within the esophagus using a human model in which the exact duration of reflux was known. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The pathogenesis of Barrett's esophagus (BE) is incompletely understood. Patients undergoing esophagectomy and gastric tube reconstruction represent a good model for studying the pathophysiology of columnar cell metaplas
The conodont fauna in the middle ordovician Eoplacognathus pseudoplanus Zone of Baltoscandia
Conodont faunas from the Eoplacognathus pseudoplanus Zone in five main areas of Middle Ordovician rocks in Sweden are described and discussed and compared with faunas of comparable age from neighbouring areas. The investigation is based on 118 samples which together yielded 175 114 conodont elements. The Swedish conodont faunas are intermediate between shallower-water faunas from the eastern part
Core excitation in O-3 localized to one of two symmetry-equivalent chemical bonds: Molecular alignment through vibronic coupling
Core excitation from terminal oxygen O-T in O-3 is shown to be an excitation from a localized core orbital to a localized valence orbital. The valence orbital is localized to one of the two equivalent chemical bonds. We experimentally demonstrate this with the Auger-Doppler effect which is observable when O-3 is core excited to the highly dissociative O(T)1S(-)17a(1)(1) state. Auger electrons emit
