Incomes and Income Inequality in Stockholm, 1870–1970: Evidence from Micro Data

This paper analyzes incomes and income inequality in Stockholm from 1870 to 1970. The paper builds on a new dataset of 38,022 randomly sampled Stockholm residents 1870–1950, with information on income, occupation, age, gender, and household composition. This is complemented by the Census of 1930 and a Statistics Sweden sample for 1960 and 1970. Incomes were very unequally distributed between 1870

A genome-wide association study of social trust in 33,882 Danish blood donors

Social trust is a heritable trait that has been linked with physical health and longevity. In this study, we performed genome-wide association studies of self-reported social trust in n = 33,882 Danish blood donors. We observed genome-wide and local evidence of genetic similarity with other brain-related phenotypes and estimated the single nucleotide polymorphism-based heritability of trust to be

Feasibility-Usability Study of a Tablet App Adapted Specifically for Persons with Cognitive Impairment-SMART4MD (Support Monitoring and Reminder Technology for Mild Dementia)

Population ageing within Europe has major social and economic consequences. One of the most devastating conditions that predominantly affects older people is dementia. The SMART4MD (Support Monitoring and Reminder Technology for Mild Dementia) project aims to develop and test a health application specifically designed for people with mild dementia. The aim of this feasibility study was to evaluate

Designing for Existential Sustainability : The Intersection of Social Sustainability and Universal Design, explored through Social Staircases

In this article we discuss the notions of social sustainability and universal design by reflecting on a particular type of architectural element in common space, namely the “social staircases” that serve as multifunctional spaces beyond mere transportation, aiming at social interaction. Through empirical examples, including a detailed analysis of a newly built housing project in Sweden, renowned f

The environmental experience during daylight and dark conditions: a conceptual model for pedestrians and cyclists : La experiencia ambiental en condiciones de luz diurna y oscuridad: Un modelo conceptual para peatones y ciclistas

Walking and cycling are considered sustainable transport modes, promoted as a means to reduce car traffic. In the scientific literature, they have mostly been investigated separately, but should be considered jointly to enable a modal shift. Both daytime and dark conditions need to be studied, to improve understanding of how environmental features are affected by temporal variation. A conceptual m

Expressions of Trust : How University STEM Teachers Describe the Role of Trust in their Teaching

Positive teacher-student and student-student relationships are among the most significant factors contributing to learning, motivation, wellbeing, and graduation rates in higher education. Trust is commonly understood as a key element for the development and sustenance of positive educational relationships, yet relatively little empirical research investigates trust in higher education classrooms.

Systemic intermediaries and the transition toward forest-based bioeconomy in the North

The activities of cluster initiatives operating as systemic intermediaries and supporting networking activities have been discussed in prior studies. We integrate insights from the cluster theory and the literature on sustainability transitions to study the activities of clusters acting as systemic intermediaries in the different phases of the development of a forest-based bioeconomy, namely (1) p

Biliverdin Reductase-A integrates insulin signaling with mitochondrial metabolism through phosphorylation of GSK3β

Brain insulin resistance links the failure of energy metabolism with cognitive decline in both type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2D) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), although the molecular changes preceding overt brain insulin resistance remain unexplored. Abnormal biliverdin reductase-A (BVR-A) levels were observed in both T2D and AD and were associated with insulin resistance. Here, we demonstrate that re

IGFBP7 is upregulated in islets from T2D donors and reduces insulin secretion

Intra-islet crosstalk has become a focus area to fully understand the regulation of insulin secretion and impaired β-cell function in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Here, we put forward evidence for insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) as a potential protein involved in autocrine and paracrine β-cell regulation. We showed presence of IGFBP7 in granules of both human α- and β-cells and mea

Dealing with sportswashing – an exercise in honour and popular culture

Qatar 2022 has become a symbol of sportswashing, a flagpost for discussions about accountability, responsibility, and morality within different sport disciplines, football being a prime example. “Moral violation” has been listed as the crime surrounding sportswashing (Fruh, Archer & Wojtowicz 2023, 103). After frenzied use of the word in connection to the last football world cup 2022, there ca

Särskilt fokus läggs på nordisk diplomatihistoria via Diplomatic history is one of the giants of historical scholarship, which has often been questioned and challenged throughout its lifetime. This article discusses the field of New Diplomatic History centered on definitions of diplomacy in general and specifically on research on the early modern period during the last decades. Special focus is placed on Nordic early modern diplomatic history through

Dynamic changes in immune gene co-expression networks predict development of type 1 diabetes

Significant progress has been made in elucidating genetic risk factors influencing Type 1 diabetes (T1D); however, features other than genetic variants that initiate and/or accelerate islet autoimmunity that lead to the development of clinical T1D remain largely unknown. We hypothesized that genetic and environmental risk factors can both contribute to T1D through dynamic alterations of molecular

Communication work for influencing destination resilience–DMOs experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic

Previous research has identified good communication as one of several key factors essential for destination resilience. However, there has been a lack of research on how communication contributes to this development. To address this gap, this study explores the communication work done by Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) with stakeholders to influence destination resilience. The study ex
