On selection of threshold values in alarm-systems for drinking water monitoring

Islamic Semiotic Resources in US Hip-Hop Culture

This dissertation contributes to the field of Islamic Studies by analyzing how the production of Islam can be seen as the outcome of interactions between actors who define themselves as Muslims as well as those who do not. The argument of this dissertation is that Muslims as well as non-Muslims have used Islamic themes in their artistic productions throughout the history of African American music

Changing an industry with membrane technology – Converting pulp mills to bio-refineries

The pulp and paper industry is one of the most important industrial sectors worldwide and has a great potential to be the nucleus for the future bio-economy. Today’ pulp industry is mainly focusing on the production of cellulose fibres and electricity, while its future potential includes the production of bio-chemicals, bio-fuels and advanced materials. In order to fulfil their future role, pulp m

A novel adeno-associated virus capsid with enhanced neurotropism corrects a lysosomal transmembrane enzyme deficiency

Recombinant adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are popular in vivo gene transfer vehicles. However, vector doses needed to achieve therapeutic effect are high and some target tissues in the central nervous system remain difficult to transduce. Gene therapy trials using AAV for the treatment of neurological disorders have seldom led to demonstrated clinical efficacy. Important contributing factors are

Streaming instability of multiple particle species in protoplanetary disks

The radial drift and diffusion of dust particles in protoplanetary disks affect both the opacity and temperature of such disks, as well as the location and timing of planetesimal formation. In this paper, we present results of numerical simulations of particle-gas dynamics in protoplanetary disks that include dust grains with various size distributions. We have considered three scenarios in terms

Spatiotemporal pattern of Wnt-canonical pathway in dorsal telencephalic organoids.

In the last decade, organoid technology has filled the gap generated by the poor accessibility and unique features of the human brain. Organoids present several advantages in comparison with two-dimensional culturing, since they recapitulate cytoarchitecture in space and functionality of the tissue. Therefore, they mimic the unique features of human brain better than animal models. Although signif

User privacy attitudes regarding proximity sensing

User attitudes on privacy with respect to location data has been extensively studied. However, user attitudes of privacy in relation to proximity sensing is still lacking. We present the results from a survey conducted on users of a proximity sensing application we developed and diffused by handing out phones with the proximity sensing application pre-installed, with 31 respondents. The results co

A Joint Desalination and Power Plants for Water and Development: A Case study of the Sinai-Gaza

Desalination can be a cost-effective way to produce fresh water and possibly electricity. The Gaza Strip has had a complex hydro-political situation for many years. Gaza (enclosed area) is bordered by the Mediterranean in the west, by Israel in the north and east and by Egypt in the south. Water and electricity consumption in the Gaza Strip is expected to increase in the future due to the increasi

The fossil alga Chaetocladus gracilis revisited : new material from the Silurian of Sweden

In 2006, a new species of non-calcified dasycladalean alga, Chaetocladus gracilis, from the upper Silurian of Skåne (Scania), southernmost Sweden, was erected. The original description was based on a single incomplete fossil recovered from the abandoned limestone quarry at Bjärsjölagård, a classic geologic locality in Scania. Here we present four additional and, importantly, more complete specimen
