Merging Law and Sociology: Beyond the Dichotomies of Socio-Legal Research

This book brings into question the dichotomies inherent in the sociology of law. It is a journey in search of a method capable of taking us beyond the theoretical limitations imposed on socio-legal research by sharply defined divisions such as “law on the books” and “law in action”, “formal” and “informal law”, “facts” and “norms”, “form” and “substance”, “internal” and “external” legal cultures o

Surface proteins of pathogenic streptococci

A streptococcus) and the group B streptococcus (GBS) are two important human pathogens that cause different types of diseases and express different surface structures implicated in virulence. This thesis focuses on several surface proteins expressed by these pathogens, analyzing the biological function of these proteins and their ability to elicit protective immunity.

Understanding Admissibility

Lewis' concept of admissibility was introduced as an integral part of his famous Principal Principle; the principle that initial rational/reasonable belief should conform to objective chance unless there is evidence to the contrary. At that time Lewis offered only the rough and ready characterisation that evidence not to the contrary of such dependence is admissible. This, together with some suffi

Combustion Bowl Heat Transfer Analysis in Diesel and PPC Engines

Frågan om global uppvärmning har varit vid liv enda sedan IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) grundadeThis thesis concerns a numerical investigation on heat transfer in internal combustion engines, with the aim of increasing engine efficiency. The efficiency gains are to be extracted from reduced heat transfer losses, by increasing the knowledge on how the heat transfer process is affected by various hardware and operational parameters in the engine. The engines concerned are both conventional die

On Optimal Control for Concept Evaluation and System Development in Construction Machines

The main goal with this thesis is to develop a method to maximize the fuel efficiency [ton/l] in construction machines, while fulfilling the desired productivity [ton/h]. This is achieved by focusing on two of the main influencers; the machine concept evaluation and the development of operator assist systems. To be able to perform a concept evaluation that is unbiased from control engineering expe

Distributed Kalman Filtering Using Weighted Averaging

This paper addresses the problem of distributed Kalman filtering, with focus on limiting the required communication bandwidth. By distributed we refer to a scenario when all nodes in the network desire an estimate of the full state of the observed system and there is no centralized computation center. Communication only takes place between neighbors and only a fixed number of times each sample. To

Digital in-line holography on amplitude and phase objects prepared with electron beam lithography.

We report on the fabrication and characterization of amplitude and phase samples consisting of well defined Au or Al features formed on ultrathin silicon nitride membranes. The samples were manufactured using electron beam lithography, metallization and a lift-off technique, which allow precise lateral control and thickness of the metal features. The fabricated specimens were evaluated by conventi

HPV-16 E2 contributes to induction of HPV-16 late gene expression by inhibiting early polyadenylation.

We provide evidence that the human papillomavirus (HPV) E2 protein regulates HPV late gene expression. High levels of E2 caused a read-through at the early polyadenylation signal pAE into the late region of the HPV genome, thereby inducing expression of L1 and L2 mRNAs. This is a conserved property of E2 of both mucosal and cutaneous HPV types. Induction could be reversed by high levels of HPV-16

Poland’s List of Monarchs and the La Fontaine Fable in a Moralizing Work of Swedish Eighteenth-Century Literature The paper elucidates a work of Early Modern Swedish literature, entitled Polska Kongars Saga och Skald [Saga and Song of Polish Kings] and published anonymously at the royal printing house in Stockholm in 1736. This book is remarkable in several respects. In 51 chapters it portrays th

Turning weakness into strength: strategies for future LIS

Purpose – LIS has been described as a fragmented field in crisis, with an increased competition from other fields; and lacking in development of theories. The purpose of this paper is to articulate a strategy in which the perceived weakness can be seen as a source of strength. Design/methodology/approach – The text builds mostly on reflections on meta-theoretical and science-organisation literatur

Food monitoring based on diode laser gas spectroscopy

Abstract Food is frequently packed in a controlled environment of gas, in order to extend shelf life. It is of great importance to be able to monitor the status of the packed food to ensure quality. We demonstrate a technique to monitor the gas inside packages non-intrusively by using a laser spectroscopicmethod in scattering solid materials. The technique named GASMAS (GAs in Scattering Media Abs

Och nu börjar historien : Hjalmar Söderbergs novellkonst

Hjalmar Söderberg (1869–1941) published some seventy short stories in five collections, Historietter (1898), Främlingarna (1903), Det mörknar öfver vägen (1907), Den talangfulla draken (1913) and Resan till Rom (1929). The present study explores Söderberg’s short fiction from a genre-historical and genre-theoretical perspective. It investigates the characteristic traits of Söderberg’s short-story

Rhinarium temperature dynamics in domestic dogs

Many mammals have specialized nose-tips with glabrous and often wet skin, called rhinaria. The function of the rhinarium is unknown in most species. Rhinaria differ not only in shape and skin structure, but also in skin temperature. They are considerably colder in carnivorans than in herbivorous artio- and perissodactyls. Domestic dogs are carnivorans and their noses often feel cold, such that the

In this study, the presence of anisakid nematodes in the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) was investigated. A total of 30 specimens of eels were caught by local fishermen from the Buyuk Menderes River, Turkey. Nematoda species of Raphidascaris acus was found from eels. This is the first record of R. acus from A. anguilla from Turkish waters. The ribosomal DNA (rDNA) internal transcribed spacer

Inequality of education in colonial Ghana: European influences and African responses

How and why did African households under colonial rule make the decision to educate their children or not, and how did this micro- level decision making affect the diffusion of education in colonial Ghana? This paper addresses these questions and shows that many households were reluctant to enrol their children in school because the costs of colonial education were prohibitive, and the benefits we

Disease and fertility: Evidence from the 1918-19 influenza pandemic in Sweden

What are the consequences of a severe health shock like an influenza pandemic on fertility? Using rich administrative data and a difference-in-differences approach, we evaluate fertility responses to the 1918–19 influenza pandemic in Sweden. We find evidence of a small baby boom following the end of the pandemic, but we show that this effect is second-order compared to a strong long-term negative

Digitalt beroende : en relevant massmedial diskurs i samhället?

This essay is about digital addiction as a relevant mass media discourse in today’s information society. The purpose of the essay is to study this alleged digital addiction to see if it is reasonable, and then analyse how it can affect people’s relationships with technology and each other. The essay also strives to highlight the different opinions depending on generation and the discussion of digi

Serial Dependence and Portfolio Performance in the Swedish Stock Market

This paper studies the possibility to exploit linear dependence in stock returns of the Swedish OMX 30 index. The main model studied in the paper is a Vector autoregressive (VAR) model. Ten years of data from the OMX 30 index is used, consisting of 27 stocks for the period 2006-2015 which is transformed into daily, weekly and monthly returns. First the significance of the models is tested and it i

Analysis of human neural cells phenotype after culture on different nanostructured topographies

The journey of a nerve cell Our body contains a complex network of nerve cells that form connections. Imagine if one of these connections is broken, just like when a power line is cut off, electricity cannot flow to the destination. In the same way if a connection is broken in the central nervous system, electrical synapses cannot travel to their destination. When drawing power lines they requir
