Nanothermodynamics for optoelectronic semiconductor devices

Thermal fluctuations and non-equilibrium carriers can significantly alter the physical properties of nanoscale systems, and could be used to enhance the efficiency of energy-conversion therein. Here we describe our research to exploit these effects to boost the performance of nanoscale optoelectronic devices in a project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Membrane-based oil-water separation: Membranes, concepts and case studies

1. IntroductionThe demand for efficient oil-water separation is driven by the tightening of discharge limits for e.g. produced water in the oil and gas industry, process water in the petrochemical industry and bilge water in the marine industry. The global produced water production alone is over 71 billion bbl/a – 8.4 billion m3/a [1]. Among the different technologies, particularly ultrafiltration

Mitochondrial Effects of Common Cardiovascular Medications : The Good, the Bad and the Mixed

Mitochondria are central organelles in the homeostasis of the cardiovascular system via the integration of several physiological processes, such as ATP generation via oxidative phosphorylation, synthesis/exchange of metabolites, calcium sequestration, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production/buffering and control of cellular survival/death. Mitochondrial impairment has been widely recognized as a

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development : Transformative Change through the Sustainable Development Goals?

The 2030 Agenda of the United Nations comprises 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 sub-targets which serve as a global reference point for the transition to sustainability. The agenda acknowledges that different issues such as poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, environmental degradation, among others, are intertwined and can therefore only be addressed together. Impl

Molecular dynamics simulations and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements of C–H bond order parameters and effective correlation times in a POPC-GM3 bilayer

Glycolipids such as gangliosides affect the properties of lipid membranes and in extension the interactions between membranes and other biomolecules like proteins. To better understand how the properties of individual lipid molecules can contribute to shape the functional aspects of a membrane, the spatial restriction and dynamics of C–H bond segments can be measured using nuclear magnetic re

Temporal Understanding of the Water–Energy Nexus : A Literature Review

Guaranteeing reliable access to water and clean energy has been one of the most debated topics to promote sustainable development, which has made the Water–Energy Nexus (WEN) a relevant field of study. However, despite much development of the WEN, there are still many gaps to be addressed. One of these gaps is the understanding of temporal features. To address this, this study aimed to identify, c

Modelling forests as social-ecological systems : A systematic comparison of agent-based approaches

The multifunctionality of forest systems calls for appropriately complex modelling approaches to capture social and ecosystem dynamics. Using a social-ecological systems framework, we review the functionality of 31 existing agent-based models applied to managed forests. Several applications include advanced cognitive and emotional decision-making, crucial for understanding complex sustainability c

Towards alternative ecologies of encounter: crafting a vital materialist perspective of cultural entrepreneurship

In the wake of an aesthetic capitalism, the cultural and creative industries (CCI) have become a growing and thriving sector of Western and other economies. Cultural entrepreneurial processes propel the CCI and their regime of aesthetic innovation and constitute constantly evolving art worlds. My dissertation focuses on the material-affective dimensions of these art worlds. It explores cultural en

Building-site camps and extended work hours : A two-week monitoring of self-reported physical exertion, fatigue, and daytime sleepiness

Large-scale construction work often requires people to work longer daily hours and more than the ordinary five days in a row. In order to minimize transportation times and optimize the use of personnel, workers are sometimes asked to live in temporary building-site camps in the proximity of the work site. However, little is known about the biological and psychological effects of this experience. T

Defence on Demand : A physiological perspective on phenotypic plasticity in anti-predator traits

Almost all species face some degree of predation risk, and, hence, evolution has produced a plethora of anti-predator defences. However, anti-predator strategies require resources, and the prevailing risk of becoming prey is influenced by many factors and rarely constant across time and space. Evolution has therefore favoured the development of phenotypic plasticity in anti-predator defences. Using discrete event simulation in supply chain planning

Supply chains are difficult to plan because they involve complex relationships that influence supply chain performance. In this paper, discrete-event simulation (DES) is discussed in order to identify if it could be a technique used to improve supply chain planning. Two DES models have been developed and are used in this paper to find out whether DES could be a technique for unraveling the complex

Framing shared services Accounting, control and overflows

During the last decade there has been an increase in the use of horizontal organizational relationships (HORs) such as strategic alliances, shared services, and outsourcing. Studies accentuate the unstable, fragile nature of HORS and the importance of directing attention to how these arrangements are formed and how and why they change. The aim in this study is to explore control problems of HORs a

Developing dopaminergic cell therapy for Parkinson's disease-give up or move forward?

Despite 3 decades of basic and clinical studies, there is still no dopaminergic cell therapy for Parkinson's disease. Several arguments have been put forward why this approach, so far tested with transplantation of human fetal mesencephalic dopamine-rich tissue, will never be of clinical use and should be abandoned: (1) Lack of efficacy in 2 sham surgery-controlled trials; (2) occurrence of troubl

Postmodernity and its Archive. The Principle of Insufficient Reason Revisited

In this essay, I discuss two major theoretical discourses of modernity, namely, of classical modernity and postmodernity. Moreover, I aim at a proposition of a possible historical relation between those two discourses of crucial importance to modernity’s intellectual history. This historical connection is founded on what I call the principle of insufficient reason. The principle of insufficient

Immunochemical Staining of MT2-MMP Correlates Positively to Angiogenesis of Human Esophageal Cancer

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role in the pathological processes of degradation of extracellular matrix and destruction of basement membrane, which leads to tumor invasion and metastasis. In the present study, we investigated membrane-type 2 MMP (MT2-MMP) expression pattern in esophageal cancer tissues collected from 103 patients, and explored MT2-MMP expression pattern in cor
