Investigating the space for research and learning within doctoral education in medicine

Doctoral education in medicine, engineering, technology and science (METS) is in many ways different from doctoral education in the humanities or social sciences. In the METS disciplines, typically, students and supervisors work and publish together within the supervisors’ research projects. The projects are usually financed by the supervisors’ research grants and their success, in terms of high q

Implicit les applied to isothermal swirling coaxial jets

This work is devoted to the analysis of the interaction of two coaxial jet with swirling flow using Large Eddy Simulation methodology to reproduce the case of Roback and Johnson. The eight - flat - vanes in the annular nozzle are the precursor of the swirling annular jet with high swirl number. An implicit LES model was used, this model uses mesh size as filter width so no sub-grid model is requir

Swirl influence on mixing and reactive flows

The interaction of two confined coaxial jets has been studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Annular jet flows over 8 flat blade swirl generator. Numerical simulation uses RNG k- ϵ turbulence model. These models are suitable for turbulent swirl dominated flows. Intermediate swirl injector has been simulated and the flow patterns for non-reactive and reactive cases are contrasted. Low swirling

Stakeholder Engagement Manual

This report been prepared as a deliverable for work package 2 of QuInnE – ‘Quality of Jobs and Innovation Generated Employment Outcomes’. This is an interdisciplinary research project investigating how job quality and innovation mutually impact on each other and the effects that this interaction has on job creation and the quality of new jobs. A key premise of the project is that for its findings

Impact of agricultural water management on lake water budget : A case study of Lake Ikeda, Japan

Hydrological assessment of the effect of water utilization on a lake water budget isindispensable for proper water management. A model to estimate lake water level was developed for Lake Ikeda, Japan, and was applied to investigate the lake water budget and to examine the effect of agricultural water management on the lake water level. The calculated lake water levels agreed well with the measured

Fact-Finding Online – A Fair Trial Offline?

The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the International Criminal Court (ICC) faces massive evidentiary problems due to flawed state-cooperation, limited access to sites of atrocity and an insufficient budget. Meanwhile, potentially relevant digital open-source information abounds, as citizens increasingly turn to social media to spread awareness of human rights violations and possible internationa

Egendom utan skydd?

Samtidigt rör det sig om ett tvångsingrepp med potentiellt långtgående konseOn 8 November 2024, non-conviction-based confiscation was introduced into Chapter 36, Section 5 of The Swedish Criminal Code (1962:700) as a part of a broader reform of the confiscation legislation. This measure has primarily been justified with regards to the need for more effective tools to combat organised crime and neutralise criminal proceeds. At the same time, it is a coercive measure with p

Finanskrisen år 2008 har i flera avseenden inneburit en förvärYoung workers are facing challenging times in the European labour market. Naturally, young workers often lack the skills and work experience required by employers, but to make matters worse, when young workers do find employment, it tends to be less stable compared to the older generation of more established workers. The 2008 financial crisis, which negative impact is still being felt in Europe as

Business and legal aspects of cross-border M&A under scrutiny of the Merger Regulation 4046/89/EEC

The European Union (EU) is heading for an increased economic, legal and political integration of its Member States. In spite of all the efforts to bring the people of Europe closer, significant differences in national laws and cultures still exist. Enhanced understanding of such disparities can create opportunities for companies operating on the EU market in several areas, including the way to dea

Inom EU finns Within the European Union (EU), the freedom of movement guaranteed in the Treaties has increased significantly the last decade. Companies may move their establishment from one Member State to another and with the companies, the employees and their families follow. An effect of the integration within the European Union is a high level of cross-border family relationships. As a result, family law ha

A pedagogical mentorship model for doctoral students

In Sweden, the pedagogical training of doctoral students varies significantly across universities. While most institutions include at least one mandatory course in higher education teaching and learning, some programs lack this requirement entirely. Whether doctoral students are encouraged or even allowed to take multiple pedagogical courses also varies greatly. Breast cancer diagnosis using extended-wavelength diffuse reflectance spectroscopy : comparing tumor subgroups

Optical imaging utilize light to analyze biological tissues in detail, non-invasively and without harmful radiation. Examples include ultrasound optical tomography and photoacoustic imaging; both use a limited number of wavelengths. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, another optical technique, covers a continuous wavelength range, but without generating an image. This study focuses on extended-wave

Simulation of ultrasound optical tomography (UOT) for characterizing breast tumors

The capabilities of ultrasound optical tomography (UOT) is investigated through Monte Carlo simulations on realistic breast tissue phantoms constructed using the OpenVCT platform. This work indicates that UOT is a method capable of distinguishing malignant tumor tissue from benign glandular tissue deep inside the breast, despite the natural variations of adipose and glandular compartments within a

Netquant2 : automated web-based quantification of neutrophil extracellular traps from fluorescence microscopy

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are structures that neutrophils form in response to various stimuli, including invading pathogens. NETs are increasingly studied, and their importance has been demonstrated in autoimmunity and infection. However, no consensus has emerged on their quantification, with many studies resorting to manually counting NETs in microscopy images. NETQUANT is a free soft

Macrophage expressed tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5 promotes pulmonary fibrosis progression

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive lung disorder involving scarring of pulmonary tissue and a subsequent decrease in respiratory capacity, ultimately resulting in death. Tartrate resistant acid phosphatase 5 (ACP5) plays a role in IPF but the exact mechanisms are yet to be elucidated. In this study, we have utilized various perturbations of the bleomycin mouse model of IPF includ
