Exploring History: a Mobile Inclusive Virtual Tourist Guide

In the present paper we report on the design decisions and the field test results of an inclusive mobile tourist guide app, the Time Machine. The historical information is conveyed by sound and the navigation information by haptics, while the app can be controlled eyes-free by a combination of on-screen and free-form gestures. To emphasize the eyes-free use, 9 of 11 test users recruited had severe

Local Success, Global Failure: Challenges Facing the Recovery Operations of Critical Infrastructure Breakdowns

Many of society’s critical infrastructures, such as power supply, telecommunications, and transportation, have become increasingly interconnected. While this gives rise to increased efficiency, tighter connections also invites increased vulnerability and the risks of cascading failures. Moreover, at the same time as many of these vital systems have become increasingly dependent on one another, the

The purpose of the thesis is to study whether any special professional norms exist with regard to principals’ leadership of the democratic mission which is presented to the schools. The aim is to identify norms in order to be able to later analyse and understand them. Norms exist in groups of various types, and by using the term “norm” I am addressing the actions of principals, rather than their i

The evolution of Z stent-based stent-grafts for endovascular aneurysm repair: a life-table analysis of 7.5-year followup.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of stent-graft design and operator skills on outcomes after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred sixty-four patients (mean age 71 years) underwent stent-graft repair. Patients were treated with four different types of stent-graft: first-generation (n = 58) and second-generation (n = 17) Ivancev-Malm

A New IL-6-Inducing Mechanism in Cancer with New Therapeutic Possibilities

Background: Interleukin-6 is dysregulated in multiple pathological conditions, e.g., cancer and inflammatory diseases. Aim: To investigate new mechanisms for the regulation of pathological IL-6 production. Methods: PBMCs (peripheral blood mononuclear cells) stimulated by cancer serum factors or specific peptides produce interleukin-6 (IL-6). Immunoregulatory albumin neo-structures and peptides wer

The current false lumen endograft and clinical experience for false lumen occlusion in chronic aortic dissection

False lumen management of chronic aortic dissections has evolved during the past decade. Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) continues to be the mainstay of endovascular dissection treatment and relies on the adequate sealing of the proximal entry tear. However, TEVAR alone often fails to achieve aortic remodeling due to persistent distal retrograde perfusion of the false lumen with contin

Early Ezetimibe Initiation After Myocardial Infarction Protects Against Later Cardiovascular Outcomes in the SWEDEHEART Registry

Background: Combination lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) after myocardial infarction (MI) achieves lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and better cardiovascular outcomes vs statin monotherapy. As a result, global guidelines recommend lower LDL-C but, paradoxically, advise treatment through a stepwise approach. Yet the need for combination therapy is inevitable as <20% of patients

Medarbetaravtal vid motorproduktionen i Skövde - inverkan på anställningsrätten, förläggning av arbetstiden, arbetstagarorganisationernas inflytande, samt arbetstagares arbetsskyldighet

White- and blue collar workers traditionally belong to different unions and, therefore, are covered by different collective agreements. Collective agreements for different employee categories create internal divisions, which mean that white collar workers are not obliged to do work that falls under a blue collar agreement and reversed. Historically the difference between white- and blue collar wor

Communicating emotional state and personality with eye-color and light intensity

We conducted two experiments where subjects rated images of a robot head with different eye colors and light intensities on how well they communicate emotions like anger, enjoyment, and surprise, as well as personality traits like friendliness, intelligence, and level of trust. Results indicate e.g. that green and turquoise eye colors were more associated with agreeable personality traits. We foun

Characteristics of two-color holographic recording in lithium niobate doped with thulium

We report ultraviolet-induced transient and stable absorption and two-color holographic recording at 514, 633, and 830 nm in thulium doped stoichiometric LiNbO 3 crystal. The gating light at 355 nm increased the diffraction efficiency and sensitivity. We found the optimum gating-recording intensity ratio for maximum diffraction efficiency and weak nonvolatile holographic storage with gating.

On the temperature in dynamic crack surface ligaments

Small ligaments connecting the crack surfaces just behind the moving crack front are assumed to exist during fast cleavage crack growth. The production and conduction of heat during the process of tearing these ligaments are studied. The straining is computed by assuming an elastic visco-plastic material model. The produced heat during plastic work is calculated. Heat conduction is considered. Making decision on repointing of clay brick facades on the basis of moisture content and water absorption tests results – a review of assessment methods

Use of clay brick masonry in façades is often motivated by its aesthetic values and durability. Yet, mortar joints exposed to climate agents erode over time, expected to cause elevated moisture content and water absorption. Thus, it is often recommended that 40- to 50-year-old facades should be repointed – a measure which is intrusive and costly. Decision is in many cases taken without a clear evi

Disturbances of autonomic nervous function in primary Sjogren's syndrome

Autonomic nervous function was evaluated by deep breathing [expiration/inspiration (E/I) ratio] and tilt table tests [acceleration (AI) and brake indices (BI)] in 19 patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) and in 56 age matched controls. The E/I-ratio and systolic blood pressure (at rest, 1, and 8 min after tilt) were found to be significantly reduced (p < 0.001, p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.0

Homeostatic swimming of zooplankton upon crowding : The case of the copepod Centropages typicus

Crowding has a major impact on the dynamics of many material and biological systems, inducing effects as diverse as glassy dynamics and swarming. While this issue has been deeply investigated for a variety of living organisms, more research remains to be done on the effect of crowding on the behaviour of copepods, the most abundant metazoans on Earth. To this aim, we experimentally investigate the

Artificial intelligence to predict West Nile virus outbreaks with eco-climatic drivers

Background: In Europe, the frequency, intensity, and geographic range of West Nile virus (WNV)-outbreaks have increased over the past decade, with a 7.2-fold increase in 2018 compared to 2017, and a markedly expanded geographic area compared to 2010. The reasons for this increase and range expansion remain largely unknown due to the complexity of the transmission pathways and underlying disease dr

The role of CT-assessed sarcopenia and visceral adipose tissue in predicting long-term survival in patients undergoing elective endovascular infrarenal aortic repair

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if ileo-psoas muscle size and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) can predict long-term survival after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). METHODS: Patients who underwent EVAR between 2004 and 2012 in a single centre were included. Total psoas muscle area (TPA), abdominal VAT area, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and total adipose tissue were measured on the preoperative CT.

Lightweight vehicles in indirect structural health monitoring : Current advances and future prospects

Recent research has explored the potential of using the dynamic response of passing vehicles to conduct Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) efficiently. Various types of vehicles, including cars, vans, trucks, and even manually propelled carts, have been employed in this approach, with different configurations of exciters and receivers. A noteworthy development in this field involves the inclusion
