Yeast Aquaglyceroporins Use the Transmembrane Core to Restrict Glycerol Transport

Aquaglyceroporins are transmembrane proteins belonging to the family of aquaporins, which facilitate the passage of specific uncharged solutes across membranes of cells. The yeast aquaglyceroporin Fps1 is important for osmoadaptation by regulating intracellular glycerol levels during changes in external osmolarity. Upon high osmolarity conditions, yeast accumulates glycerol by increased production

Age-associated changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular function in middle-aged and older men are modified by weight change and lifestyle factors: longitudinal results from the European Male Ageing Study

Objective: Health and lifestyle factors are associated with variations in serum testosterone levels in ageing men. However, it remains unclear how age-related changes in testosterone may be attenuated by lifestyle modifications. The objective was to investigate the longitudinal relationships between changes in health and lifestyle factors with changes in hormones of the reproductive endocrine axis

Six-dimensional real and reciprocal space small-angle X-ray scattering tomography.

When used in combination with raster scanning, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) has proven to be a valuable imaging technique of the nanoscale, for example of bone, teeth and brain matter. Although two-dimensional projection imaging has been used to characterize various materials successfully, its three-dimensional extension, SAXS computed tomography, poses substantial challenges, which have ye

Coupling planktonic and benthic shifts during a bloom of Alexandrium catenella in southern Chile: Implications for bloom dynamics and recurrence

Cell abundances and distributions of Alexandrium catenella resting cysts in recent sediments were studied along time at two locations in the Chilean Inland Sea exposed to different oceanographic conditions: Low Bay, which is much more open to the ocean than the more interior and protected Ovalada Island. The bloom began in interior areas but maximum cyst concentrations were recorded in locations m

Holomorphic harmonic morphisms from four-dimensional non-Einstein manifolds

We construct 4-dimensional Riemannian Lie groups carrying left-invariant conformal foliations with minimal leaves of codimension 2. We show that these foliations are holomorphic with respect to an (integrable) Hermitian structure which is not Kähler. We then prove that the Riemannian Lie groups constructed are not Einstein manifolds. This answers an important open question in the theory of complex

Multivariate phenotypes and the potential for alternative phenotypic optima in wall lizard (Podarcis muralis) ventral colour morphs

A major goal in evolutionary biology is to determine how phenotypic variation arises and is maintained in natural populations. Recent studies examining the morphological, physiological and behavioural differences among discrete colour morphotypes (morphs) have revealed several mechanisms that maintain discrete variation within populations, including frequency-dependence, density-dependence and cor

Sequential Radioimmunotherapy with (177)Lu- and (211)At-Labeled Monoclonal Antibody BR96 in a Syngeneic Rat Colon Carcinoma Model.

Abstract Alpha-particle emitters, such as astatine-211 ((211)At), are generally considered suitable for the treatment of small cell clusters due to their short path length, while beta-particle emitters, for example, Lutetium-177 ((177)Lu), have a longer path length and are considered better for small, established tumors. A combination of such radionuclides may be successful in regimens of radioimm

Orientational correlations in confined DNA

We study how the orientational correlations of DNA confined to nanochannels depend on the channel diameter D by means of Monte Carlo simulations and a mean-field theory. This theory describes DNA conformations in the experimentally relevant regime where the Flory-de Gennes theory does not apply. We show how local correlations determine the dependence of the end-to-end distance of the DNA molecule

Dissolution of dissolving pulp in alkaline solvents after steam explosion pretreatments

In this project different aqueous based solvent systems were investigated for the dissolution of steam exploded (STEX) dissolving pulps prior to a coagulation step for preparation of textile fibers. The pulp samples studied could, to a large degree, be dissolved in a NaOH/urea/thiourea system, but there are always residuals, irrespective of the conditions. The dissolution process appeared to be ki

Process Based Large Scale Molecular Dynamic Simulation of a Fuel Cell Catalyst Layer

In this paper, a large scale molecular dynamic method for reconstruction of the catalyst layers (CLs) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells is developed as a systematic technique to provide an insight into the self-organized phenomena and the microscopic structure. The proposed Coarse-Grained (CG) method is developed and applied to the step formation process, which follows the preparation of the

Bile Enhances Cell Surface Hydrophobicity and Biofilm Formation of Bifidobacteria.

Twenty-four human bifidobacterial strains were analysed for cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) using a salt aggregation test (SAT) and a Congo red binding (CRB) assay. Three strains were selected for a systematic study on the CSH and biofilm formation: Bifidobacterium breve 46, Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis 8:8 and a reference strain B. animalis ssp. lactis JCM 10602. CRB of the B. breve 46

Value-driven purchasing of kitchen cabinets in industrialised housing

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to hypothesize that value-driven purchasing of customized kitchen cabinets is more profitable than market-driven purchasing in industrialised housing construction. The hypothesis is examined through a case study of kitchen carpentry at one of the Sweden's largest producers of industrialised prefabricated multi-storey housing. By comparing characteristics of m

Photoemission-time-delay measurements and calculations close to the 3s-ionization-cross-section minimum in Ar

We present experimental measurements and theoretical calculations of photoionization time delays from the 3s and 3p shells in Ar in the photon energy range of 32-42 eV. The experimental measurements are performed by interferometry using attosecond pulse trains and the infrared laser used for their generation. The theoretical approach includes intershell correlation effects between the 3s and 3p sh

Immobilisation and application of lipases in organic media.

Different methods of preparing lipases for use in organic media are critically reviewed. Solid lipase preparations can be made by typical immobilisation methods such as adsorption, entrapment, covalent coupling or cross-linking. Immobilisation is especially attractive for lipases because, in addition to the normal benefits of enzyme immobilisation, it can also lead to a considerable increase in ca

Formation of nanogaps in InAs nanowires by selectively etching embedded InP segments

We present a method to fabricate nanometer scale gaps within InAs nanowires by selectively etching InAs/InP heterostructure nanowires. We used vapor-liquid-solid grown InAs nanowires with embedded InP segments of 10-60 nm length and developed an etching recipe to selectively remove the InP segment. A photo-assisted wet etching process in a mixture of acetic acid and hydrobromic acid gave high sele

Silver Nanorice Structures: Oriented Attachment-Dominated Growth, High Environmental Sensitivity, and Real-Space Visualization of Multipolar Resonances

We have synthesized and investigated the anisotropic growth of interesting silver nanorice. Its growth is kinetically controlled at 100 degrees C, and both oriented attachment and Ostwald ripening are involved, with the former growth mode dominating the anisotropic growth of the nanorice along the < 111 > direction. This one-directional growth is initiated by an indispensable seed-selection proces

Diagnostic Performance of Radiographs and Computed Tomography for Displacement and Instability of Acute Scaphoid Waist Fractures

Background: Fracture displacement is the most important factor associated with nonunion of a scaphoid waist fracture. We evaluated the performance characteristics of radiographs and computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of intraoperative displacement and instability of scaphoid waist fractures using wrist arthroscopy as the reference standard. Methods: During a six-year period (2004 to 2010) a
