Phonon spectral density in a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot

We study phonon emission in a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot by monitoring the tunneling of a single electron between the two dots. We prepare the system such that a known amount of energy is emitted in the transition process. The energy is converted into lattice vibrations, and the resulting tunneling rate depends strongly on the phonon scattering and its effective phonon spectral density. We are

Strandliv

The beach is the main accessible public space for the inhabitants of Gaza, and plays a central role for leisure time and recreation. However, the water is contaminated and dangerous for bathing, which reflects the major issues Gaza faces with wastewater treatment and adequate infrastructure.

Long-term cement hydration studies with isothermal calorimetry

The purpose of this study was to investigate for how long the thermal power of hydration can be measured with isothermal calorimetry, which is a general measurement technique with stable properties that, in many cases, can detect low rates of processes. Measurements were conducted for 365 days on cement paste with Portland cement, fly ash blended Portland cement and different water-to-binder ratio

International manufacturing relocation - the phenomenon of backshoring

Recently, firms have started to bring back once offshored manufacturing activities from far distant locations, an activity referred to as backshoring. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the backshoring phenomenon by answering four research questions related to different aspects of manufacturing relocation. Thereby, the thesis makes several important contributions t

Mayan & Swedish attitudes and practices toward death

This study explores how Mayan people from Guatemala and Swedes view and behavetoward death. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis, 10 participants from each culture were interviewed to elucidate the most relevant and important emerging themes. The Mayan approach to death is based on a collective perspective in which consultations with Elders, ancient traditions, and rituals help provid

A Contoured-Beam Reflector Satellite Antenna Using Two Doubly Curved Circular Polarization Selective Surfaces

We present a reflector antenna system using a circular polarization selective surface (CPSS) to realize a circular polarization (CP) equivalent to the widely used linear polarization (LP) gridded or dual-gridded reflector (DGR). The CPSS is realized by a multilayer stack of non-resonant anisotropic meander line surfaces, achieving a very wide bandwidth. The CPSS reflection and transmission dyadics

Technology, ICT and tourism : from big data to the big picture

The past years have seen an unprecedented growth in the ICT economy that has fundamentally altered business models and consumer cultures. Many of the changes this has implied are specifically relevant for tourism, a sector that perhaps more than any other is exposed to and implicated in digital innovation, consumer-business interrelationships, and platform reliance. Most studies of the digitalizat

Towards realization of an Energy Internet : Designing distributed energy systems using game-theoretic approach

Distributed energy systems play a significant role in the integration of renewable energy technologies. The Energy Internet links a fleet of distributed energy systems to each other and with the grid. Interactions between the distributed energy systems via information sharing could significantly enhance the efficiency of their real-time operation. However, privacy and security concerns hinder such

Utility analysis for SHM durations and service life extension of welds on steel bridge deck

Optimization of the duration of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) campaigns is rarely performed. This article provides a utility-based solution to posteriorly determine: i) optimal monitoring durations and ii) the extension of the service life of the welds on a steel bridge deck. The approach is illustrated with a case study focusing on remaining fatigue life estimation of the welds on the orthot

Soil carbon sequestration simulated in CMIP6-LUMIP models : Implications for climatic mitigation

Land-use change affects both the quality and quantity of soil organic carbon (SOC) and leads to changes in ecosystem functions such as productivity and environmental regulation. Future changes in SOC are, however, highly uncertain owing to its heterogeneity and complexity. In this study, we analyzed the outputs of simulations of SOC stock by Earth system models (ESMs), most of which are participan

Minimum-time feedforward control in ratio control systems

In this paper we propose a ratio control scheme for industrial processes that exploits a two-state feedforward action in order to achieve a minimum-time set-point transient response, by considering the actuator constraints. A Tracking Ratio Station is then used to achieve the desired ratio value when the two processes have different dynamics. The control architecture can easily be implemented with

Synergies between astroparticle, particle and nuclear physics

One overarching objective of science is to further our understanding of the universe, from its early stages to its current state and future evolution. This depends on gaining insight on the universe's most macroscopic components, for example galaxies and stars, as well as describing its smallest components, namely elementary particles and nuclei and their interactions. It is clear that this endeav

Baryon production from small to large collision systems at ALICE

Studies of the production of light- and heavy-flavor baryons are of prominent importance to characterize the partonic phase created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions and to investigate hadronization mechanisms at the LHC. Studies performed in p-Pb and pp collisions have revealed unexpected features, qualitatively similar to what is observed in larger collision systems and, in the charm sec

Analytical results for hadronic contributions to the muon g−2

This talk discusses two analytical calculations relevant for the Standard Model calculation of the muon g−2. The first part is the recent derivation of the quark-loop as the first term in a well-defined operator-product expansion for the short-distance part of the hadronic light-by-light contribution, as well as the calculation of the next term. The second part is the calculation of finite volume
