Vitamin D deficiency in elderly people in Swedish nursing homes is associated with increased mortality
Objective: Institutionalised elderly people at northern latitudes may be at elevated risk for vitamin D deficiency. In addition to osteoporosis-related disorders, vitamin D deficiency may influence several medical conditions conferring an increased mortality risk. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its association with mortality. Design: The Study of He
The use of micro- and nanoparticles in the stabilisation of pickering-type emulsions for topical delivery.
This review describes the use of Pickering emulsions for topical drug delivery. The focus is on Pickering emulsions and how to formulate these. However, a short description of the challenges of topical drug delivery is also given. The article describes how Pickering emulsions might have other properties than traditional topical creams. It is our believe that Pickering emulsions could give added va
Improving a plot-scale methane emission model and its performance at a northeastern Siberian tundra site
In order to better address the feedbacks between climate and wetland methane (CH4) emissions, we tested several mechanistic improvements to the wetland CH4 emission model Peatland-VU with a longer Arctic data set than any other model: (1) inclusion of an improved hydrological module, (2) incorporation of a gross primary productivity (GPP) module, and (3) a more realistic soil-freezing scheme. A lo
Service Orienting the Swedish Vaccination Recommendation Activity with the Business Rules Centric Digital Service VacSam
Uniform control and coordination of immigrant children’s vaccination is a critical current problem in the Swe-dish child health safety work. In this paper we discuss the Business Rules (BR) centric and SOA architected digital service VacSam. VacSam incorporates principles of SOA, Business Rules Approach, and Business Pro-cess Management. The incorporation is used for deriving VacSam from a part of
Early Cellular Pathways of Mouse Natural Killer Cell Development.
Natural killer (NK) cells are large granular lymphocytes that are components of the innate immune system. These cells are key players in the defense against viral and other microbial infections and cancer and have an important function during pregnancy, autoimmunity and allergy. Furthermore, NK cells play important roles in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation by providing the graft versu
Discoidal HDL and apoA-I-derived peptides improve glucose uptake in skeletal muscle.
Lipid-free apoA-I and mature spherical HDL have been shown to induce glucose uptake in skeletal muscle. To exploit apoA-I and HDL states for diabetes therapy, further understanding of interaction between muscle and apoA-I is required. This study has examined if nascent discoidal HDL, in which apoA-I attains a different conformation from mature HDL and lipid-free states, could induce muscle glucose

More than just trees : animal species diversity and participatory forest monitoring in the Ecuadorian Amazon
The gradual disappearance of tropical animal species due to overhunting and habitat loss represents a major risk for biodiversity and tropical rainforest conservation efforts. Uncontrolled hunting and other human-induced declines in diversity and abundance of seed-dispersing animal species might also negatively affect biomass carbon storage, which could undermine climate change mitigation efforts.
Yoga-based exercise improves balance and mobility in people aged 60 and over: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
one-third of community-dwelling older adults fall annually. Exercise that challenges balance is proven to prevent falls. We conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis to determine the impact of yoga-based exercise on balance and physical mobility in people aged 60+ years.
Non-invasive risk scores for prediction of type 2 diabetes (EPIC-InterAct): a validation of existing models.
The comparative performance of existing models for prediction of type 2 diabetes across populations has not been investigated. We validated existing non-laboratory-based models and assessed variability in predictive performance in European populations.
Modeling and robust pooling design of a preparative cation-exchange chromatography step for purification of monoclonal antibody monomer from aggregates.
This study has implemented and calibrated a model that describes the separation of the monomer of monoclonal antibodies from the dimer and larger oligomers on preparative-scale using cation-exchange chromatography. A general rate model with temperature dependent diffusion was coupled to a pH- and temperature-dependent steric mass action model. The model was shown to predict the retention of the mo
The Mantle Cell Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (MIPI) is superior to the International Prognostic Index (IPI) in predicting survival following intensive first-line immunochemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT)
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) has a heterogeneous clinical course. The recently proposed Mantle Cell Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (MIPI) predicted the survival of MCL better than the International Prognostic Index in MCL patients treated with conventional chemotherapy, but its validity in MCL treated with more intensive immunochemotherapy has been questioned. Applied here to 158 patients o

Expression of Cocaine- and Amphetamine-Regulated Transcript Is Associated with Worse Survival in Small Bowel Carcinoid Tumors
Purpose: Cocaine-and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide exerts several regulatory functions acting both as neurotransmitter and hormone. We recently showed that CART is expressed in various neuroendocrine tumors, including small bowel carcinoids. The main objective of the present study was to examine whether CART expression is associated with survival in patients with small bowel carc
Investigation of Hydrogen Enriched Natural Gas Flames in a SGT-700/800 Burner Using OH PLIF and Chemiluminescence Imaging
The effect of hydrogen enrichment to natural gas flames was experimentally investigated at atmospheric pressure conditions using flame chemiluminescence imaging, planar laser-induced fluorescence of hydroxyl radicals (OH PLIF), and dynamic pressure monitoring. The experiments were performed using a third generation dry low emission (DLE) burner used in both SGT-700 and SGT-800 industrial gas turbi
Low-mass vector-meson production at forward rapidity in p plus p collisions at root s=200 GeV
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured low-mass vector-meson ,omega, rho, and phi, production through the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (1.2 < vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.2) in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The differential cross sections for these mesons are measured as a function of both p(T) and rapidity. We also report the integrated di

Description of the new I1011 beamline for magnetic measurements using synchrotron radiation at MAX-lab
We report on the characterization of the new I1011 beamline at the MAX-II storage ring, in the MAX-lab synchrotron radiation laboratory and give examples of first results. This beamline is using an Elliptically Polarizing Undulator source, producing soft x-rays of a variable polarization state. It delivers high flux and high brightness circularly polarized x-rays in the energy range 0.2 to 1.7 keV
Exact algebraization of the signal equation of spoiled gradient echo MRI
The Ernst equation for Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance (MR) describes the spoiled steady-state signal created by periodic partial excitation. In MR imaging (MRI), it is commonly applied to spoiled gradient-echo acquisition in the steady state, created by a small flip angle α at a repetition time TR much shorter than the longitudinal relaxation time T1. We describe two parameter transf
