A combined chemical vapor deposition and rapid thermal diffusion process for SiGe Esaki diodes by ultra-shallow junction formation

SiGe Esaki diodes have been realized by rapid thermal diffusion of phosphorous into an SiGe layer grown by ultra-high-vacuum chemical-vapor-deposition on an Si p(+)-substrate for the first time. The phosphorous-doped SiGe forms the n(+)-electrode, while heavily boron-doped Si0.74Ge0.26 and Si substrate is used for the p(+) electrode. The diodes show a peak current density of 0.18 kA/cm(2), a curre

Skin toxicity as a risk factor for major infections in breast cancer patients treated with docetaxel

Docetaxel-related skin toxicity, oral and gastrointestinal mucosal toxicity, and changes in blood cell counts were investigated as predictive factors for major infections in 143 women treated with 3-weekly docetaxel (100 mg/m(2)) as second-line therapy for metastatic breast cancer in a randomized trial. Each patient with a major infection (n = 37) was compared with two controls. Skin toxicity (odd

Physical activity and risk of colon and rectal cancers: The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition

We investigated several aspects of the role of physical activity in colon and rectal cancer etiology that remain unclear in the European Prospective Investigation into Nutrition and Cancer. This cohort of 413,044 men and women had 1,094 cases of colon and 599 cases of rectal cancer diagnosed during an average of 6.4 years of follow-up. We analyzed baseline data on occupational, household, and recr

Another Modernism? Form, Content and Meanings of the New Housing Architecture of Hanoi

Popular Abstract in Swedish En annan modernism? Form, innehåll och betydelse av ny bostadsarkitektur i Hanoi. The study deals with the issue of how to understand and assess modern architecture in a non-Western context. Is there a non-Western modern architecture in its own right and with meanings connected to the local context or is it mere copy of Western modern architecture? At the primary level the study discusses the meanings and directions of contemporary architecture in a modernising society such as

High luminescence from a substituted polythiophene in a solvent with low solubility

Steady-state and rime-resolved photoluminescence (PL) is used to probe different states of order in highly regular poly(3-(2'-methoxy-5'-octylphenyl)thiophene) (POMeOPT). In a good solvent (chloroform) the polymer has a PL yield of 0.33 and in a solvent with low solubility (mixture of chloroform and toluene) a new phase appears with higher PL yield (0.50). The new phase is attributed to micro-crys

Astrometric radial velocities. III. Hipparcos measurements of nearby star clusters and associations

Radial motions of stars in nearby moving clusters are determined fromaccurate proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes, without any use ofspectroscopy. Assuming that cluster members share the same velocityvector (apart from a random dispersion), we apply a maximum-likelihoodmethod on astrometric data from Hipparcos to compute radial and spacevelocities (and their dispersions) in the Ursa Major,

Perchloroethylene: Effects on body and organ weights and plasma buturylcholinesterase activity in mice

The effects of continuous and intermittent inhalation of perchloroethylene (PCE) on plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) activity, organ weights, liver morphology and motor activity in mice (strain NMRI) were tested. PCE exposure increased plasma BuChE activity in a time- and concentration dependent manner in both sexes. The increase was statistically significant at 37 p.p.m. in animals continuous

A systematic overview of radiation therapy effects in brain tumours

A systematic review of radiation therapy trials in several tumour types was performed by The Swedish Council of Technology Assessment in Health Care (SBU). The procedures for evaluation of the scientific literature are described separately (Acta Oncol 2003; 42: 357-365). This synthesis of the literature on radiation therapy for brain turnouts is based on data from 9 randomized trials and 1 meta-an

Relevance of philosophy of life and optimism for psychological distress among individuals in a stage where death is approaching

The purpose was to investigate the relevance of philosophy of life as well as optimism for the psychological distress among Swedish individuals in a stage where death is approaching. Sixty-nine persons were included; of these were 42 patients newly diagnosed with advanced gastrointestinal cancer and 26 were partners to these patients. The participants' philosophy of life was studied through a semi

Irregular walks and loops combines in small-scale movement of a soil insect: implications for dispersal biology

Analysis of small-scale movement patterns of animals we may help to understand and predict movement at a larger scale, such as dispersal, which is a key parameter in spatial population dynamics. We have chosen to study the movement of a soil-dwelling Collembola, Protaphorura armata, in an experimental system consisting of a clay surface with or without physical obstacles. A combination of video re

3D domain-swapped human cystatin c with amyloidlike intermolecular beta-sheets

Oligomerization of human cystatin C (HCC) leads to amyloid deposits in brain arteries, and this process is greatly accelerated with a naturally occurring L68Q variant. The crystal structures of N-truncated and full-length HCC (cubic form) showed dimer formation via three-dimensional (3D) domain swapping, and this observation has led to the suggestion that an analogous domain-swapping mechanism, bu

Blood Pressure Control and Risk of Stroke. A Population-Based Prospective Cohort Study.

Background and Purpose— Adequate control of blood pressure (BP) is a cornerstone in stroke prevention. This study explored the risk of stroke in relation to the quality of BP control in a population-based cohort and whether control of hypertension was related to background characteristics of patients. Methods— A total of 27 936 subjects (10 953 men and 16 983 women), 45 to 73 years old, living in

Non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic neural activation in guinea-pig bronchi: powerful and frequency-dependent stabilizing effect on tone

1 We examined non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) stimulation for its stabilizing effect on bronchial smooth-muscle tone with respect to its regulatory power and the effect of variations in neural impulse frequency. 2 The guinea-pig isolated main bronchus (n = 4-12) was pretreated with indomethacin (1O JAM) and incubated with atropine (1 pM) and guanethidine (10 JM). Electrical field stimulatio

Women's Human Rights and Islam : a Study of Three Attempts at Accommodation

För andrThe dissertation focuses on interpretations of Islam that claim compatibility with international human rights norms in the context of women’s rights. These interpretations are seen as parts of an on-going contemporary international debate on women’s human rights and Islam that engages Muslims as well as non-Muslims. Existing UN-formulated international human rights schemes are a basic starting poi
