MR imaging of upper abdomen following cholecystectomy. Normal and abnormal findings

PURPOSE: To describe the normal MR appearance after cholecystectomy and the findings in patients with postoperative complications using fast pulse sequences in abdominal MR imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a prospective study of 119 patients, 64 were examined with MR after cholecystectomy. In total, 56 patients with uncomplicated cholecystectomy were examined with MR 1--5 days (mean 1.6 days) aft

Effectiveness of a light-weight ice-vest for body cooling while wearing fire fighter’s protective clothing in the heat

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of wearing an ice-vest (ca 1 kg) on physiological and subjective responses in fire fighters. The experiments were carried out on a treadmill in a hot-dry environment. The physical cooling effect of the ice-vest was measured with a thermal manikin. The ice-vest effectively reduced skin temperatures under the vest. On average, heart rate was 10 beats m

Calculation of the Fire Resistance of Wood Based Boards and Wall Constructions

The project is a part of the research programme "Timber constructions and fire" and has been financed by funds from the Swedish Fire Research Board. The aim of the project is to illustrate the possibility of calculating the fire resistance of building panels and wall constructions. The work has been planned in consultation with the steering group "Timber construction and fire" of the Swedish Fire

Evangelium Cyrillicum Gothoburgense : A Codicological, Palaeographical, Textological and Linguistic Study of a Church Slavonic Tetraevangel

A codicological study showed that the MS bears signs of earlier restoration and that some leaves are missing at the beginning and at the end. The watermark is a "boar", and the date of ECG is believed to be 1605-1625 on the basis of an identical watermark in ano

Scattering-matrix formalism of electron transport through three-terminal quantum structures: formulation and application to Y-junction devices

In this paper we present a formalism for the calculation of electron transport through three-terminal junction devices, which have received attention due to their recently demonstrated non-linear electrical properties. The formalism, which is based on the scattering-matrix method, takes quantum interference effects fully into account. Furthermore, the formalism provides numerical stability in the

On the nature and expression of prejudice as seen in judgments of pictorial stimuli.

In Study 1 (N = 120), pictures of violent behavior taking place within or between ethnic groups were rated under different instructions. A strong cross-over effect was found: interracial violence was reported as relatively more threatening under the instruction that the study concerned anxiety, whereas violence among Whites was reported as more threatening under the instruction that the study conc

The small sample properties of the reset test as applied to systems of equations

The RESET test for functional misspecification is generalised to cover systems of equations, and the properties of 7 versions are studied using Monte Carlo methods. The Rao F -test clearly exhibits the best performance as regards correct size, whilst the commonly used LRT (uncorrected for degrees-of-freedom), and LM and Wald tests (both corrected and uncorrected) behave badly even in single equati

Effects of phosphorothioated neuropeptide Y Y1-receptor antisense oligodeoxynucleotide in conscious rats and in human vessels

1. Metabolically stabilized (phosphorothioate) human and rat NPY Y1 receptor oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) complimentary to the rat or human Y1 mRNA were synthesized; [sense (rY1-SODN, 5'-AATTCAACTCTGTTCTCC-3'), antisense (hY1-ASODN, 5'-CCTGGGAAAATAATGTTG-3' and rY1-ASODN, 5'-GGAGAACAGAGTTGAATT-3') and mismatches (hY1-MMODN, 5'-CCTGAGATAA-TAAGGTTG-3' and rY1-MM 5'-GTAGATCAGAGATGAAGT-3')] and used t

PID Control, Design, Extension, Application

This thesis considers the design of PID controllers, the extensions of these controllers to improve their performance, and the applications of these design methods to industrial processes. New tuning methods for PI and PID controllers have been presented. These methods uses a model of the process to be controlled, given as a transfer function. The methods captures essential requirements of a cont

Irreversible progression of severe retinopathy in young type I insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients after improved metabolic control

The impact of metabolic control on the development of rapidly progressive severe retinopathy was studied in 14 young type I insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients. Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) levels 45 months prior to and 12 months after the diagnosis of retinopathy were compared with HbAlc levels in 17 type I IDDM patients with no or minimal background retinopathy, matched for ag

O2 consumption, aerobic glycolysis and tissue phosphagen content during activation of the Na+/K+ pump in rat portal vein

Oxygen consumption, lactate production and tissue contents of ATP, phosphocreatine (PCr) and lactate were measured following readdition of K+ to K+-depleted rat portal veins, in order to study the energy turnover associated with Na+/K+ pumping. During incubation in K+-free medium at 37 degrees C spontaneous contractions disappeared in 10-20 min. Readdition of K+ (5.9 mM) after 40 min K+-free incub

Ambiguous truths? : people and animals in pre-christian Scandinavia

Abstract in UndeterminedIn our modern society peoples attitudes towards animals are inconsistent, to say the least. Behind these heterogeneous attitudes there are several economic and cultural aspects. What possibilities do we have of studying relations between humans and animal, between nature and culture, in the distant past? What are our starting-points? How do we understand realities that diff
