A numerical investigation of primary surface rounded cross wavy ducts
A three-dimensional numerical study was conducted to assess the hydraulic and heat transfer performance of primary surface type heat exchanger surfaces, called cross wavy (CW) ducts aimed for recuperators. The governing equations, i.e., the mass conservation equation, Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation, are solved numerically by a finite volume method for boundary fitted coordinates.
Generation of regionally specified neurons in expanded glial cultures derived from the mouse and human lateral ganglionic eminence
The specific identity of neuronal precursors within the embryonic brain is, at present, not clear. Here we show that cultures with glial characteristics derived from the embryonic mouse or human lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE) can be expanded over many passages and maintain their glial identity. Interestingly, removal of serum and EGF from the culture medium results in the generation of large nu

Plasma calcitonin gene-related peptide is increased prior to obesity, and sensory nerve desensitization by capsaicin improves oral glucose tolerance in obese Zucker rats
Objective: It has earlier been demonstrated that capsaicin-induced desensitization improves insulin sensitivity in normal rats. However, whether increased capsaicin-sensitive nerve activity precedes the onset of insulin resistance in diet-induced obesity - and therefore might be involved in the pathophysiology - is not known. Further, it is of relevance to investigate whether capsaicin desensitiza
Variations of wettability and protein adsorption on solid siliceous carriers grafted with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), a thermally responsive polymer, was end-grafted to mercaptopropyl derivatives of silica gel, plane glass sheets and glass capillary tubing by free radical polymerization of the monomer in 1,4-dioxane at 100 degrees C. The polymer monolayer attached to the glass carriers provided them with thermally controlled wettability registered by two independent methods: direct me
Magnetization transfer imaging for polymer gel dosimetry
Off-resonance RF pre-saturation was used to obtain contrast in MRI images of polymer gel dosimeters irradiated to doses up to 50 Gy. Two different polymer gel dosimeters composed of 2-hydroxyethyl-acryl ate or methacrylic acid monomers mixed with N, N'-methylene-bisacrylamide (BIS), dispersed in an aqueous gelatin matrix were evaluated. Radiation-induced polymerization of the co-monomers generates
A new taxonomy of the Caloplaca citrina group in the Nordic countries, except Iceland
The Caloplaca citrina group in the Nordic countries, except Iceland, is analysed with regard to morphology, anatomy, ecology, and chemistry. Their genetic relationship is also analysed using the ITS ribosomal DNA gene. The results show that there are at least five species within what has been called C. citrina, of which four are closely related to one another and to several non-sorediate species.
Protein FOG is a moderate inducer of MIG/CXCL9, and group G streptococci are more tolerant than group A streptococci to this chemokine's antibacterial effect
Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (group G streptococci; GGS) cause disease in humans but are often regarded as commensals in comparison with Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococci; GAS). The current study investigated the degree and kinetics of the innate immune response elicited by the two species. This was assessed as expression of the chemokine MIG/CXCL9 and bacterial suscept

Toxins of the helicobacter genus and their roles in pathogenesis
In the 20 years since the discovery of Helicobacter pylori the number of formally described Helicobacter spp. has increased dramatically. The majority of species in the genus have been associated with some form of pathology. Similar to other Gram-negative bacteria, all helicobacters have lipopolysaccharides or endotoxins in the outer leaflet of their outer membrane which is an important modulator
Face-to-Face, Buzz and Knowledge Bases: Socio-Spatial Implications for Learning, Innovation and Innovation Policy
Whilst concurring with the new streams of literature in geography that highlight the importance of face-to-face and ‘buzz’ in the globalizing learning economy, we argue that this literature is misleading on three interrelated counts. Firstly, it conflates face-to-face and buzz; secondly, it fails to distinguish between the importance of face-to-face and buzz for industries drawing on different kno

High predictive value of the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology damage index for survival in systemic lupus erythematosus.
OBJECTIVE: We previously reported high Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) scores in fatal cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) from our inception cohort. This study was done to clarify if the SLICC damage scores 5 years after diagnosis predicted the outcome. METHODS: We studied 80 patients with SLE (70 women, 10 men), all enrolled and diagnosed during the years 1981
Bronchoalveolar lavage studies in children without parenchymal lung disease: cellular constituents and protein levels
We evaluated bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) for cellular constituents, concentration of total protein (TP), albumin (AL), fibronectin (FN), and hyaluronic acid (HA) in 16 children aged 2-32 months without pulmonary inflammatory or parenchymal disease to establish reference values. We compared our data to those reported in older children and in normal adult volunteers. BAL results were obtained
Kinetics, energetics and specificity of a general amino acid transporter from the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus
The kinetics, energetics and specificity of a general amino acid transporter were studied in the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus (Batsch) Fr. The uptake of amino acids showed features characteristic of active transport. After correction for a non-mediated transport component, the kinetics of glutamate, glutamine, alanine and aspartate uptake measured over a wide concentration range follo

Satellite cells and myonuclei in young and elderly women and men
The overall aim of this study was to assess the effects of aging on the satellite cell population. Muscle biopsies were taken from the tibialis anterior muscle of healthy, moderately active young (age range, 20-32 years; n = 31) and elderly (age range, 70-83 years; n = 27) women and men with comparable physical activity pattern. Satellite cells and myonuclei were visualized using a monoclonal anti
Genetic networks with canalyzing Boolean rules are always stable
We determine stability and attractor properties of random Boolean genetic network models with canalyzing rules for a variety of architectures. For all power law, exponential, and flat in-degree distributions, we find that the networks are dynamically stable. Furthermore, for architectures with few inputs per node, the dynamics of the networks is close to critical. In addition, the fraction of gene
Antisense inhibition of laminin-8 expression reduces invasion of human gliomas in vitro
Using gene array technology, we recently observed for the first time an up-regulation of laminin alpha4 chain in human gliomas. The data were validated by semiquantitative reverse transcription-PCR for RNA expression and immunohistochemistry for protein expression. Moreover, increase of the alpha4 chain-containing laminin-8 correlated with poor prognosis for patients with brain gliomas. Therefore,
