Effect of mechanical load on optical properties of un-doped and Eu3+-doped Y2SiO5 at the quantum scale

It is well known that material properties are size dependent at small enough geometrical scales. With the advance of technology and computational power, we are now able to bridge the atomistic or even electronic scale phenomena with macroscopic properties of materials. A strategy to capture the electronic structure effect is to perform first principles calculations. Here we present results of firs

Splitting or synonymizing – genus concept and taxonomy exemplified by the Parmeliaceae in the Nordic region.

The current use of a 30 million year dateline for accepting genera in the Parmeliaceae is evaluated. Its value is doubtful since evolution obviously went quicker in some lichen groups compared with others. Parallel evolution is also very common among lichens. Polyphyletic genera should always be split, while sister groups may remain split or be combined after considering non-molecular characters. Current state of Lobaria pulmonaria in southernmost Sweden.

Sites of Lobaria pulmonaria reported from the nemoral zone of the Swedish provinces Skåne and Blekinge since 1990 were revisited. At each locality, the habitat ecology and lichen viability were investigated. A substantial decline was noted, particularly in Skåne, as L. pulmonaria was found at only 24 sites, 22 of which were forests and two were wooded meadows. The commonest habitats for L. pulmonaSites of Lobaria pulmonaria reported from the nemoral zone of the Swedish provinces Skåne and Blekinge since 1990 were revisited.

Quantification of lithium at ppm level in geological samples using nuclear reaction analysis

Proton-induced reaction (p,α) is one type of nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) suitable especially for light element quantification. In the case of lithium quantification presented in this work, accelerated protons with an energy about of 850 keV were used to induce the 7Li(p,α)4He reaction in standard reference and geological samples such as tourmaline and other Li-minerals. It is shown that this t

Ultra-fast intramolecular vibronic coupling revealed by RIXS and RPES maps of an aromatic adsorbate on TiO2(110)

Two-dimensional resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES) maps are presented for multilayer and monolayer coverages of an aromatic molecule (bi-isonicotinic acid) on the rutile TiO2(110) single crystal surface. The data reveal ultra-fast intramolecular vibronic coupling upon core excitation from the N 1s orbital into the lowest unoccupied molecular o

Market versus endowment : explaining early industrial location in Italy (1871–1911)

This article aims to explain the location of the manufacturing industries in Italy in the period 1871–1911. The analytical framework takes into account of two competing theories on the determinants of the location of economic activity: the Heckscher–Ohlin (H–O) theory on factor endowments and the new economic geography (NEG) theory on access to markets. The methodology used here is based on Midelf

Dissipation Factors of Spherical Current Modes on Multiple Spherical Layers

Radiation efficiencies of modal current densities distributed on a spherical shell are evaluated in terms of dissipation factor. The presented approach is rigorous, yet simple and straightforward, leading to closed-form expressions. The same approach is utilized for a two-layered shell and the results are compared with other models existing in the literature. Discrepancies in this comparison are r

Seve terranes of the Kebnekaise Mts., Swedish Caledonides, and their amalgamation, accretion and affinity

A major allochthon of the Scandinavian Caledonides, the Seve belt has traditionally been considered to be derived from the rifted margin and continent-ocean transition (COT) of Baltica. However, geochronological results obtained from its inferred northern equivalent, the Kalak Nappe Complex (KNC), have been taken to indicate an exotic affinity of this complex and of also Seve terranes, an interpre

Cracking the Sugar Code by Mass Spectrometry : An Invited Perspective in Honor of Dr. Catherine E. Costello, Recipient of the 2017 ASMS Distinguished Contribution Award

The structural study of glycans and glycoconjugates is essential to assign their roles in homeostasis, health, and disease. Once dominated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometric methods have become the preferred toolbox for the determination of glycan structures at high sensitivity. The patterns of such structures in different cellular states now allow us to interpret the s

Data acquisition, processing and filtering for reliable 3D resistivity and time-domain induced polarisation tomography in an urban area : Field example of Vinsta, Stockholm

There is an increasing demand for trustworthy engineering geological conceptual models in urban areas due to an increasing trend in the underground infrastructure construction. Good-quality site investigations can reduce the risk of encountering unexpected geological conditions during construction. Geoelectrical measurements can be used as a tool for providing an overview of the site conditions an

Self-reporting traffic crashes – a systematic literature review

Purpose: A traffic safety analysis that is based on registered crashes often suffers from underreporting, which may result in biased conclusions and lead to misguided crash-prevention strategies. Self-reporting traffic crashes is a complementary method to obtain crash information that is often not available in official databases. By surveying studies from around the world, this paper aims to map t

Evil or the Lack of Meaning

I argue that Paul Ricœur displaces and decentres established theodicies; the issue of evil is perceived as a practical rather than a speculative matter. It is the view of evil as a productive aporia, which suggests that evil provokes action and obliges human beings to take a stand ethically and politically. Hence, the topic of evil is not necessarily about putting together a jigsaw puzzle. The cen

The Leaking Law

This chapter starts with the question of how damages for violation through crime are determined by law. Compensation for criminal injuries is the predominant type of non-pecuniary damages in Swedish tort law. Yet, a fundamental uncertainty exists regarding computation of damages and the legal meaning of ‘violation’. The general consensus in the legal profession is that norms for computation of damThis chapter starts with the question of how damages for violation through crime are determined by law.
