LINGUISTICS SEMINAR: Charlotte Englert (Konstanz): The role of phonological cues in L3 syntactic transfer
Amongst many other factors, it has been proposed that phonological cues might influence the transfer of morpho-syntactic properties in L3 acquisition (e.g. Linguistic Proximity Model; Westergaard et al. 2017). However, this claim has scarcely been empirically tested, and the results of the few existing studies are inconclusive (Wrembel et al. 2025). In this talk, I will present preliminary results from a study that addresses this research gap. The study investigates the effect of phonological cues in the form of accented speech in incipient L3 acquisition of Rhaeto-Romance by native speakers of German with intermediate to advanced proficiency in L2 French. To that end, two groups are contrasted: One group heard German-accented stimuli, the other group heard French-accented stimuli. The results of a judgement and a production task targeting the transfer of the Verb second word order will be presented.
