Assessing the use of retrospective databases in conducting economic evaluations of drugs : the case of asthma

When evaluating drug substances, the traditional clinical study setting does not allow scope for observing real-life behaviour since all alternative actions are determined beforehand. However, a study based on prospective or retrospective databases containing real-life data can examine how patients and physicians behave in a real-world setting and can investigate the relationship between the intro

Evolution of multi-stage dormancy in temporally autocorrelated environments.

Question: Under what circumstances does a capacity for multi-stage dormancy (i.e. dormancy in more than one life-stage) evolve? Mathematical methods: Optimization in stochastic environments. Results are derived both analytically and by simulations. Key assumption: There exists some trade-off between resources allocated to reproduction and adult dormant survival. Different shapes of this trade-off

Low expression of fragile histidine triad gene correlates with high proliferation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Frequent loss of heterozygosity in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has been found in several chromosomal regions such as 3p, 9p, 11q, 13q and 17p. Fragile histidine triad (FHIT) gene is located at 3p14.2 encompassing a common fragile site, and is identified as a tumor suppressor gene. We examined 57 patients with HNSCC using immunohistochemistry, western blot, and reverse transcripta

A method for contextual inquiry: some reflections

This paper is the third in a series which recounts experiences in a project conducted in a newly-created Department of the University of Portsmouth (see also Bednar et al, 2004 and Eglin et al, 2005). A variant of the Strategic Systemic Thinking (SST) Framework (Bednar, 2000) was used to support the 25 staff of the Department to explore possibilities for development in a range of areas of work rel

Chaotic electrical activity of living beta-cells in the mouse pancreatic islet

To test for chaotic dynamics of the insulin producing beta-cell and explore its biological role, we observed the action potentials with the perforated patch clamp technique, for isolated cells as well as for intact cells of the mouse pancreatic islet. The time series obtained were analyzed using nonlinear diagnostic algorithms associated with the surrogate method. The isolated cells exhibited shor

Electromagnetic energy flow near nanoparticles - I: single spheres

The electromagnetic (EM) energy flow near single spheres is investigated by applying Mie theory. From the patterns of the energy flow, the absorption and the scattering of light can be understood in the microscopic point of view. In the absorption profiles of metallic particles, most absorbed energy is consumed on the surface of the particles, which indicates that the resonance of surface plasmon

Obesity, weight change, fasting insulin, proinsulin, C-peptide, and insulin-like growth factor-1 levels in women with and without breast cancer: the Rancho Bernardo Study

Postmenopausal overweight women have an increased risk of breast cancer. The link between obesity and breast cancer could be mediated through hyperinsulinemia. Insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) stimulate mammary cell proliferation in vitro, and cell proliferation is directly linked to the risk of breast cancer. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between breast cancer

TEDDY- The environmental determinants of diabetes in the young - An observational clinical trial

The aim of the TEDDY study is to identify infectious agents, dietary factors, or other environmental agents, including psychosocial factors, which may either trigger islet autoimmunity, type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), or both. The study has two end points: (a) appearance of islet autoantibodies and (b) clinical diagnosis of T1DM. Six clinical centers screen newborns for high-risk HLA genotypes. A

Comparison of anti-GBM antibodies in sera with or without ANCA

An appreciable percentage of patients with serum anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) antibodies also have antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), against either myeloperoxidase (MPO-ANCA), or proteinase 3 (PR3-ANCA). In sera without ANCA, the anti-GBM antibodies have been shown to react mainly with the noncollagenous domain (NC1) of Type IV collagen, and especially with its alpha 3

Magnetic calculations of a superconducting undulator at the ESRF

2D and 3D models of a superconducting undulator suitable for the ESRF storage ring have been developed. The models are based on the performance of superconducting NbTi wire available from the cabling industry. Iron is used in the poles to enhance the peak field. The 2D model shows that it is possible to obtain a peak field of 1.18 T, corresponding to a K-value of 1.65, for a period length of 15 mm

Preventative environmental strategies in the service sector

Denna avhandling förklarar hur förebyggande miljöskydd som ett strategPreventative environmental approaches (e.g. Cleaner Production and Pollution Prevention) have been successfully implemented in the manufacturing industry. They are, however, far from being fully adopted by all society actors. It has, for instance, not been fully embraced by the service sector. When this research project started, the initial question was whether it was possible to adopt experiences
