Combined associations of regular exercise and work-related moderate-to-vigorous physical activity with occupational stress responses : a cross-sectional study

Objective: The association between work-related moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and higher levels of stress response is recognized, but whether this association is moderated by regular exercise remains unclear. This cross-sectional study investigated whether exercise-based physical activity (PA) associates with lower levels of stress responses moderated by work-related MVPA. Methods:

Introduction: The CVA24 antigenic variant is the causal agent of epidemics of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis that has prevailed to date. To study the transmission dynamics and evolution of this variant, we molecularly characterized Cuban isolates obtained in 5 epidemic periods between 1986 and 2009. Methods: Using the BEAST v1.8.4 program, it was performed the phylogenetic and phylodynamic analy

Amino acid ester synthesis by immobilized α-chymotrypsin

A screening of immobilized α-chymotrypsin preparations suitable for the synthesis of N-acetyl-L-tyrosine ethyl ester from N-acetyl-L-tyrosine and up to 99% ethanol was carried out. α-Chymotrypsin adsorbed to Sepharose LH-20 or covalently bound to Sepharose 4B (tresyl chloride activation) was found to be an efficient catalyst. A column packed with immobilized enzyme retained 60% of its initial acti

The epidemiological and economic burden of diabetes in Ghana : A scoping review to inform health technology assessment

Diabetes remains one of the four major causes of morbidity and mortality globally among non-communicable diseases (NCDs. It is predicted to increase in sub–Saharan Africa by over 50% by 2045. The aim of this study is to identify, map and estimate the burden of diabetes in Ghana, which is essential for optimising NCD country policy and understanding existing knowledge gaps to guide future research

Resource use, availability and cost in the provision of critical care in Tanzania : a systematic review

Objectives Critical care is essential in saving lives of critically ill patients, however, provision of critical care across lower resource settings can be costly, fragmented and heterogenous. Despite the urgent need to scale up the provision of critical care, little is known about its availability and cost. Here, we aim to systematically review and identify reported resource use, availability and

Health technology assessment (HTA) readiness in Uganda : stakeholder's perceptions on the potential application of HTA to support national universal health coverage efforts

Introduction Health technology assessment (HTA) is an area that remains less implemented in low- and lower middle-income countries. The aim of the study is to understand the perceptions of stakeholders in Uganda toward HTA and its role in decision making, in order to inform its potential implementation in the country. Methods The study takes a cross-sectional mixed methods approach, utilizing an a

Affinity fibre — a new support for rapid enzyme purification by high-performance liquid affinity chromatography

A new type of support for chromatographic use has been developed. Non-porous quartz fibre, with a mean diameter of 0.5 μm, was silylated with mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane. Tresyl chloride-activated dextran was covalently coupled to the SH groups on the fibre. Remaining active tresyl groups on the dextran were then coupled with an NAD derivative. The affinity fibre contained 0.3 μmol NAD derivativ

Magnetic aqueous two-phase separation: A new technique to increase rate of phase-separation, using dextran-ferrofluid or larger iron oxide particles

A new technique to speed up the phase separation of aqueous two-phase systems is described. The technique is based on the addition of magnetically susceptible additives (ferrofluids or iron oxide particles). In a magnetic field such additives will induce a faster phase separation. In one approach, dextran-stabilized ferrofluid was added to an aqueous two-phase system containing polyethylene glycol

Relationship between adolescent anemia and school attendance observed during a nationally representative survey in India

BACKGROUND: Anemia has been suggested to be related with schooling outcomes in India. Less is known, however, about whether the observed relationship persists after accounting for all household-level factors which may confound the association between anemia and schooling.METHODS: Nationally representative data on adolescents aged 15-18 years with data on measured hemoglobin level and school attend

Synthesis of mannose oligosaccharides via reversal of the α-mannosidase reaction

Three naturally occurring isomers of the disaccharideO-α-D-mannosyl-D-mannoside were synthesized by reversing the hydrolytic activity of jack bean α-mannosidase at 75°C in a very high concentration of mannose. Higher oligosaccharides were also obtained at the later stages of the reaction. The maximum total yield of disaccharides was 37% (w/w) based on the total amount of saccharides.
