Anisotropic responsive microgels with tuneable shape and interactions

Highly monodisperse polystyrene/poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (PS-PNIPMAM) core-shell composite microgels were synthesized and further nanoengineered in either ellipsoidal, faceted or bowl-shaped particles. Beside their anisotropy in shape, the microgel design enables an exquisite control of the particle conformation, size and interactions from swollen and hydrophilic to collapsed and hydrophobi

Characterizing nanoparticles in complex biological media and physiological fluids with depolarized dynamic light scattering

Light scattering is one of the few techniques available to adequately characterize suspended nanoparticles (NPs) in real time and in situ. However, when it comes to NPs in multicomponent and optically complex aqueous matrices - such as biological media and physiological fluids - light scattering suffers from lack of selectivity, as distinguishing the relevant optical signals from the irrelevant on

The Effect of Breast Positioning on Breast Compression in Mammography: a Pressure Distribution Perspective

The standard procedure at mammography is to compress the breast in order to improve image quality, better separate tissue components and reduce absorbed dose to the breast. Traditionally, compression guidelines have been based on applied force, rather than actual thickness reduction. Structures such as the pectoral muscle are stiffer than breast tissue and if compressed along with it, as in the ML

Challenges and Practices in Aligning Requirements with Verification and Validation: A Case Study of Six Companies

Weak alignment of requirements engineering (RE) with verification and validation (VV) may lead to problems in delivering the required products in time with the right quality. For example, weak communication of requirements changes to testers may result in lack of verification of new requirements and incorrect verification of old invalid requirements, leading to software quality problems, wasted ef

University–industry linkages and absorptive capacity: an empirical analysis of China's manufacturing industry

We analyze the contribution of universities to innovative performance in China’s manufacturing sector. Our empirical analysis is based on a matched dataset comprising about 20 000 large and medium sized companies aggregated at the three-digit industry level and information on university knowledge output for 31 provinces between 1998 and 2004. We show that universities’ impact on commercial innovat

Measurement of the W+W- Cross Section in root s=7 TeV pp Collisions with ATLAS

This Letter presents a measurement of the W+W- production cross section in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7 +/- 0.6 events. The measured cross se

Biologically effective dose in fractionated molecular radiotherapy-application to treatment of neuroblastoma with (131)I-mIBG.

In this work, the biologically effective dose (BED) is investigated for fractionated molecular radiotherapy (MRT). A formula for the Lea-Catcheside G-factor is derived which takes the possibility of combinations of sub-lethal damage due to radiation from different administrations of activity into account. In contrast to the previous formula, the new G-factor has an explicit dependence on the time

Logarithmic Mean Pressure Difference-A New Concept in the Analysis of the Flow Distribution in Parallel Channels of Plate Heat Exchangers

This paper deals with a new concept of logarithmic mean pressure difference (LMPD) to find an accurate mean or true friction coefficient for variable flow in parallel flow channels of the plate heat exchangers while considering the first and the last channel pressure drops. This is analogous to the log mean temperature difference (LMTD) used for the computation of heat transfer in heat exchangers.

In vitro cytotoxicity evaluation of HDAC inhibitor Apicidin in pancreatic carcinoma cells subsequent time and dose dependent treatment.

Apicidin is a potent histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACI) that selectively binds to histone deacetylases (HDACs) class I and interferes with the deacetylation process, which results in modification of acetylation level of cellular proteins. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential time and dose dependent cytotoxicity of the test compound, Apicidin, in pancreatic cancer cells Capan-1

Measurement of the top quark charge in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the top quark electric charge is carried out in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using 2.05 fb(-1) of data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV. In units of the elementary electric charge, the top quark charge is determined to be 0.64 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) from the charges of the top quark decay products in single lepton t (t) over bar candidate events.

Incidence, mortality rates and causes of deaths in haemophilia patients in Sweden.

Sweden has been a pioneer in the treatment of haemophilia, with the first concentrate available in the 1950s. Treatment has improved over the years to its current state-of-the art. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of haemophilia in terms of incidence, morbidity and mortality. Patients diagnosed with haemophilia A or B registered at the national haemophilia centres

The risks of nation branding as crisis response: A case study of how the Danish government turned the Cartoon Crisis into a struggle with Globalization

In this article, we investigate the limitations of organization-centric models for crisis communication in handling place crises. Two distinct types of place crisis are identified as what we respectively term the ‘sudden’ and the ‘ongoing’ type. We point out that place branding traditionally has been used to handle the latter type. We then demonstrate how the inspiration from corporate communicati
