Evaluation of non-linear combinations of rescaled reassigned spectrograms

The reassignment technique is used to increase the localization for signals that have closely located time-frequency components. For Gaussian components the reassignment based on an optimal (matched) window spectrogram will result in a single point where all mass is located. For non-optimal windows, the reassignment procedure can be optimally rescaled to fulfill the single point mass location. Non

Alarm reduction in industrial process control

The proper handling of alarms is crucial to automated process control. In practice, many alarms are only distractive and do not represent a fault situation. Here, a toolbox is proposed that aims to reduce the occurrence of the so called nuisance alarms. It is a general computerized tool that takes advantage of the control system's built-in functions, and is a first step to an enhanced overall alar

Studies in Educational Attainment and Returns to Education

This licentiate thesis consists of two separate studies on educational attainment and returns to education. The first paper, “Ethnic Segregation and Educational Attainment in Sweden”, studies whether youths brought up in ethnically segregated neighbourhoods differ in educational attainment from youths brought up in more affluent neighbourhoods, after controlling for family characteristics. The eth

Effects of sediment storage conditions on pigment analyses

Sediment pigments as an indicator of water column and benthic processes have become widely used during the last decades. However, the effect of different storage and handling conditions on the accuracy of sediment pigment analyses has not been adequately evaluated. This can potentially make comparisons between studies difficult and, at worst, call into question the validity of some studies. Even t

Recognizing phrase and utterance as prosodic units in non-tonal dialects of Kammu

This paper presents a study of prosodic phras-ing in a non-tonal dialect of Kammu, a Mon-Khmer language spoken in Northern Laos. Prosodic phrasing is seen as correlated with syntactic and informational structures, and the description is made referring to these two lev-els. The material investigated comprises sen-tences of different lengths and syntactic struc-tures, uttered by seven male speakers.

A multivariate genetic analysis of specific phobia, separation anxiety and social phobia in early childhood

Background: Comorbidity amongst anxiety disorders is very common in children as in adults and leads to considerable distress and impairment, yet is poorly understood. Multivariate genetic analyses can shed light on the origins of this comorbidity by revealing whether genetic or environmental risks for one disorder also influence another. We examined the genetic and environmental influences on the

Priorities and overload control in OSA

An Open Service Access (OSA) gateway is modelled in a multi application environment. Also, an overload control mechanism is proposed. The mechanism supports different time constraints and priorities for the applications. By simulations it is shown how the proposed overload control works during different load conditions in the modelled environment.

Potential Architecture for Future Generation "Green" Wireless Base Station

Current radio frequency power amplifiers (PAs) in 3G base stations have very high power consumption leading to a hefty cost and negative environmental impact. In this paper, we propose a potential architecture design for future wireless base station. Issues associated with components of the architecture are investigated. A comparison of PA with pulse width modulation drive and PA with envelope eli

Cellular and Molecular Aspects of the Germinal Centre Reaction

The humoral immune response to a T cell dependent protein antigen will over time generate antibodies with an increased affinity to the antigen. This is due to a process known as affinity maturation and proceeds in a, for this purpose, well designed micro-milieu within secondary lymphoid organs known as germinal centres. The increase in affinity of an antibody in, e.g. mouse and man is due mainly t

Distances between Requirements Engineering and Later Software Development Activities: A Systematic Map

[Context and Motivation] The main role of requirements engineering (RE) is to guide development projects towards implementing products that will appeal to customers. To effectively achieve this RE needs to be coordinated with and clearly communicated to the later software development activities. [Question/Problem] Communication gaps between RE and other development activities reduce coordination a
