Ubiquitin-specific protease-14 reduces cellular aggregates and protects against mutant huntingtin-induced cell degeneration: involvement of the proteasome and ER stress-activated kinase IRE1α
Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal inherited neurological disease caused by a CAG-repeat expansion in the first exon of huntingtin gene encoding for the huntingtin protein (Htt). In HD, there is an accumulation of intracellular aggregates of mutant Htt that negatively influence cellular functions. The aggregates contain ubiquitin, and part of the HD pathophysiology could result from an imba
Comparison of Humidified Hydrogen and Partly Pre-Reformed Natural Gas as Fuel for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells applying Computational Fluid Dynamics
A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach based on the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Governing equations for heat, gas-phase species, electron, ion and momentum transport are implemented and coupled to kinetics describing electrochemical as well as internal reforming reactions. The model cell design is based on a cell from
A more active treatment has profound effects on the health status of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients: results from a population-based RA register in Malmö, Sweden, 1997–2005
Methods: A continuously updated population-based RA register was established in the city of Malmo, southern Sweden, in 1997. Self-completed postal questionnaires issued in 1997, 2002, and 2005 were used to collect information on demographics, medication, and health status. Cross-sectional comparisons were made between data from 1997, 2002, and 2005. Results: Between 1997 and 2005, the proportion o
Meniscus Body Position, Size, and Shape in Persons With and Persons Without Radiographic Knee Osteoarthritis: Quantitative Analyses of Knee Magnetic Resonance Images From the Osteoarthritis Initiative
ObjectiveTo quantitatively evaluate the position, size, and shape of the menisci in subjects with radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA) compared to subjects without OA, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MethodsWe studied the right knees of 39 Osteoarthritis Initiative participants (24 women and 15 men with a mean age of 59.6 +/- 8.7 years) with medial compartment radiographic tibiofemoral OA
Disubstituted Bis-THF Moieties as New P2 Ligands in Nonpeptidal HIV-1 Protease Inhibitors (II)
A series of darunavir analogues featuring a substituted bis-THF ring as P2 ligand have been synthesized and evaluated. Very high affinity protease inhibitors (PIs) with an interesting activity on wild-type HIV and a panel of multi-PI resistant HIV-1 mutants containing clinically observed, primary mutations were identified using a cell-based assay. Crystal structure analysis was conducted on a numb
A Multicenter Trial Defining a Serum Protein Signature Associated with Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma.
Background. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive disease with rapid tumor progression and poor prognosis. This study was motivated by the lack of sensitive and specific PDAC biomarkers and aimed to identify a diagnostic, serum protein signature for PDAC. Methods. To mimic a real life test situation, a multicenter trial comprising a serum sample cohort, including 338 patients wi
From sightseeing to sunbathing: Changing traditions in Swedish package tours from edification by bus to relaxation by airplane in the 1950s and 1960s
The changing notions of tourism are analyzed by example of Swedish package tours in the 1950s and 1960s, when the dominant means of transportation for package tours changed from buses to airplanes. Simultaneously, Swedish mass tourism developed explosively so that the package tour markets of Scandinavia in the mid-1960s were the largest per capita in Europe. While package tours by bus, dominating
Stroke plane angle controls leading edge vortex in a bat-inspired flapper
The present interest in micro air vehicles has given the research on bat flight a new impulse. With the use of high speed cameras and improved PIV techniques, the kinematics and aerodynamics of bats have been studied in great detail. A robotic flapper makes it possible to do measurements by systematically changing only one parameter at a time and investigate the parameter space outside the natural
Population differences in the structure and coloration of great tit contour feathers
Contour feathers cover most of the avian body and play critical roles in insulation, social communication, aerodynamics, and water repellency. Feather production is costly and the development of the optimum characteristics for each function may be constrained by limited resources or time, and possibly also lead to trade-offs among the different characteristics. Populations exposed to different env
Analyses of recombinant activated factor VII treatments from clinical practice for rapid bleeding and acute pain control in haemophilia patients with inhibitors
Monitored versus experience-based perceptions of environmental change: evidence from coastal Tanzania
The impacts of climate change are likely to exacerbate many problems that coastal areas already face. In this study, we used multinomial logistic regression to examine human perception of climate change based on a cross-sectional survey of 1253 individuals in coastal regions of Tanzania. This was complemented with time series analysis of 50-year meteorological data. The results indicate that self-
Progression of Early Retinal Dysfunction in Diabetes Over Time: Results of a Long-term Prospective Clinical Study.
We explored signs of retinal dysfunction over time in diabetic subjects before or early in the course of retinopathy. Patients with no, mild, or moderate retinopathy were consecutively recruited and underwent standard automated perimetry, visual acuity measurement, and fundus photography. These examinations and measurements of HbA1c and blood pressure were repeated for up to 5 years from baseline.

Early intraperitoneal metabolic changes and protease activation as indicators of pancreatic fistula after pancreaticoduodenectomy
Background: Ischaemia and local protease activation close to the pancreaticojejunal anastomosis (PJA) are potential mechanisms of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) formation. To provide information on the pathophysiology of POPF, intraperitoneal microdialysis was used to monitor metabolic changes and protease activation close to the PJA after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Methods: In patient
Biolubricant synthesis using immobilised lipase: Process optimisation of trimethylolpropane oleate production
Synthetic esters based on polyols and fatty acids possess suitable technical and ecological properties for applications as biolubricants, and can replace the mineral oil based lubricants in several applications. In this work, the synthesis of trimethylolpropane (TMP) esters with oleic acid using immobilised lipase B from Candida antarctica (Novozym (R) 435) has been studied. TMP-trioleate has suit
Design of recombinant antibody microarrays for membrane protein profiling of cell lysates and tissue extracts.
Generating global protein expression profiles, including also membrane proteins, will be crucial for our understanding of biological processes in health and disease. In this study, we have expanded our antibody microarray technology platform and designed the first human recombinant antibody microarray for membrane proteins targeting crude cell lysates and tissue extracts. We have optimized all key
International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists' Anesthesia Program Approval Process.
The International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists is improving anaesthesia patient care through a voluntary Anesthesia Program Approval Process (APAP) for schools and programmes. It is the result of a coordinated effort by anaesthesia leaders from many nations to implement a voluntary quality improvement system for education. These leaders firmly believe that meeting international education stand
