Den vanliga ordföljdsregeln i tyskan är att verbet står på andra plats i huvudsatsen, på sisThe aim of this thesis is to describe and explain independent declarative clauses in German which have the finite verb in absolute clause-initial position. They are called verb-first declarative clauses. It is shown that this type of clause can be found in a variety of Germanic languages. There is evidence suggesting that this is a very old type with roots in ancient Indo-European. It has thus ex

Botany. State transitions--a question of balance
Plant biologists have struggled for decades to identify a crucial kinase that orchestrates the transition of the photosynthetic machinery from state 1 to state 2, an energy conserving-process designed to maximize the light conditions. In his Perspective, Allen reveals the identity this kinase and the mechanism by which it controls transitions
CD4-independent use of the CCR5 receptor by sequential primary SIVsm isolates
Background: CD4-independence has been taken as a sign of a more open envelope structure that is more accessible to neutralizing antibodies and may confer altered cell tropism. In the present study, we analyzed SIVsm isolates for CD4-independent use of CCR5, mode of CCR5-use and macrophage tropism. The isolates have been collected sequentially from 13 experimentally infected cynomolgus macaques and
Plasma lipoproteins and lipolytic enzyme activities during endurance training in sedentary men: changes in high-density lipoprotein subfractions and composition
Eighteen healthy sedentary males took part in supervised bicycle training for 50 minutes three to five times a week. Twelve subjects (group A) trained for 6 weeks at heavy intensity, and six subjects (group B) trained for 12 weeks at moderate intensity. Maximal oxygen uptake increased by about 20% (P less than 0.01). Body weight and composition as well as diet remained unchanged. After 6 weeks pla

Studying the effect of oxygen content on the electron structure of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 by means of photoelectron spectromicroscopy
Changes in the electron structure of the surface layer of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (NCCO) epitaxial films, which were caused by variation of the oxygen content and modification of the crystal structure of samples as a result of Ar+ ion etching and annealing, have been studied by means of photoelectron spectromicroscopy. A method is proposed for the cleaning the surface of oxygen-containing superconductors

Study of tau-pair production in photon-photon collisions at LEP and limits on the anomalous electromagnetic moments of the tau lepton
Tau-pair production in the process e(+)e(-) --> e(+)e(-) tau(+)tau(-) was studied using data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP2 during the years 1997 - 2000. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 650 pb(-1). The values of the cross-section obtained are found to be in agreement with QED predictions. Limits on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton are dedu
Packet voice rate adaptation through perceptual frame discarding
We address the problem of rate adaptation at the Source, given a congested packet based voice carrying network. We propose and analyze a novel method for perceptually based frame discarding. Thus, we propose a Perceptually Based Classifier (PBC) to do the discarding and we combine the PBC with a method for state synchronization, which exploits the knowledge of frame discards to combat the error pr

A hydrogen-atom abstraction model for the function of Y-Z in photosynthetic oxygen evolution
Recent magnetic-resonance work on Y-Z suggests that this species exhibits considerable motional flexibility in its functional site and that its phenol oxygen is not involved in a well-ordered hydrogen-bond interaction (Tang et al., submitted; Tommos et al., in press). Both of these observations are inconsistent with a simple electron-transfer function for this radical in photosynthetic water oxida
CNS progenitor cells promote a permissive environment for neurite outgrowth via a matrix metalloproteinase-2-dependent mechanism
Transplantation of progenitor cells to the CNS has shown promise in neuronal and glial replacement and as a means of rescuing host neurons from apoptosis. Here we examined the effect of progenitor grafts on neurite extension in the degenerating retina of rd1 ( retinal degeneration 1) mice. Transplantation of retinal progenitor cells induced increased matrix metalloproteinase-2( MMP2) secretion, pa

Knowledge and recognition of ecosystem services among the general public in a drainage basin in Scania, Southern Sweden
Human preferences are likely to depend on such things as knowledge and information, propaganda and advertising, and formal (laws) and informal (norms) institutions. We focus on knowledge about how nature works and how this may be manifested in recognition of ecosystem services among the general public. Participants and non-participants in a plant nutrient abatement programme with detention ponds i
