Meteorological measurements in Demokeya, North Kordofan : a contribution to climate change research

Studies of climatic change and adaptation to climate change can include a wide range of methodologies and approaches. As one of such approaches, we here present meteorological measurement data from a site in the Demokeya experimental forest outside El Obeid in North Kordofan State of Sudan. We hope this descriptive note can inform about the available meteorological data, as well as to promote and

Facile NOx interconversion over preoxidized Ag(111)

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations are used to investigate NO adsorption at low (100 K) and room temperature (RT) over preoxidized Ag(111). At 100 K, the data indicates presence of NO and N2O2, with little or no nitrite/nitrate formation. This is consistent with the calculated surface core level shifts and the pronounced barrier for nitrite formation. At RT

The infected knee arthroplasty

Resultaten är överlag goda men en allvarlig komplikation som drabbar mellan 1 och 2% av patienterna är bakterieinfThe Swedish Knee Arthroplasty Register (SKAR) was used to identify 478 cases that underwent a first-time revision with exchange or removal of the prosthesis due to infection during the years 1986–2000. 30% of the infections were diagnosed within 3 months from primary operation and two-thirds were diagnosed within 2 years. These cases frequently had a history of wound complication after the primar

Parallel evolution of the make-accumulate-consume strategy in Saccharomyces and Dekkera yeasts.

Saccharomyces yeasts degrade sugars to two-carbon components, in particular ethanol, even in the presence of excess oxygen. This characteristic is called the Crabtree effect and is the background for the 'make-accumulate-consume' life strategy, which in natural habitats helps Saccharomyces yeasts to out-compete other microorganisms. A global promoter rewiring in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae lineag

Battling Bacterial Biofilm - antibiotic regimens targeting Grampositive pathogens in biofilm

In the biofilm bacteria are protected against hostile environments. Biofilms are important clinically because of their persistence despite host defence and their recalcitrance to antimicrobials. This thesis presents three main findings: (i) biof

Shortest Paths with Curvature and Torsion

This paper describes a method of finding thin, elongated structures in images and volumes. We use shortest paths to minimize very general functionals of higher-order curve properties, such as curvature and torsion. Our globally optimal method uses line graphs and its runtime is polynomial in the size of the discretization, often in the order of seconds on a single computer. To our knowledge, we ar

Noise Convolution Models: Fluids in Stochastic Motion, Non-Gaussian Tempo-Spatial Fields, and a Notion of Tilting

The primary topic of this thesis is a class of tempo-spatial models which are rather flexible in a distributional sense. They prove quite successful in modeling (temporal) dependence structures and go beyond the limitation of Gaussian models, thus allowing for heavy tails and skewness. By generalizing the construction of the above class of models, it is possible to ‘control’ some random geometric

Novel gene targets detected by genomic profiling in a consecutive series of 126 adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia

In contrast to acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children, adult cases of this disease are associated with a very poor prognosis. In order to ascertain whether the frequencies and patterns of submicroscopic changes, identifiable with single nucleotide polymorphism array analysis, differ between childhood and adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia, we performed single nucleotide polymorphism array analys

Large herbivore grazing affects the vegetation structure and greenhouse gas balance in a high arctic mire

Herbivory is an important part of most ecosystems and affects the ecosystems' carbon balance both directly and indirectly. Little is known about herbivory and its impact on the carbon balance in high arctic mire ecosystems. We hypothesized that trampling and grazing by large herbivores influences the vegetation density and composition and thereby also the carbon balance. In 2010, we established fe

Multitaper Wigner distribution with pre-determined doppler-lag bandwdith and sidelobe suppression

Multi taper spectrogram decomposition of the time-lag kernel of a time-frequency distribution might result in computationally efficient calculations if the number of multi tapers to be considered in the spectrogram are small. In this paper, penalty functions are designed and used in the computation of multi tapers corresponding to the Wigner distribution time-lag kernel. The resulting multi taper

Compton scattering from deuterium and the polarizabilities of the neutron

A new program of Compton scattering on deuterium is under way at the tagged-photon facility at MAX-Lab in Lund, Sweden. We will measure differential cross sections between 60A degrees and 150A degrees over the photon energy range 60-115 MeV in 5 MeV steps, with the ultimate goal of obtaining new precision information on the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the neutron.

Population fluctuations and synchrony of grassland butterflies in relation to species traits.

Population fluctuations and synchrony influence population persistence; species with larger fluctuations and more synchronised population fluctuations face higher extinction risks. Here, we analyse the effect of diet specialisation, mobility, length of the flight period, and distance to the northern edge of the species' distribution in relation to between-year population fluctuations and synchrony

Substance use in adolescents and young adults: Interactions of drugs of abuse and the role of parents and peers in early onset of substance use

Background: Misuse of substances is a major contributor to disability and mortality worldwide. The use of tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs in adolescence and young adulthood are well-known risk factors for subsequent substance-related harms. A better understanding of adolescent and young adult substance use behaviors and their correlates might help develop new prevention programs. This thesis a
