Essentially Indexical Higher-Order Thoughts and Dispositions of Inexistent Mental States

In a recent paper, Miguel Sebastián has posed an objection to the higherorder thought theory of consciousness. The higher-order thought theory of consciousness holds that a mental state is conscious when it is the intentional object of a higher-order thought (HOT). Often, the HOT is conceived to be essentially indexical. This means that the HOT somehow picks out the individual who tokens it. Sebas

Soviet Refugees to Sweden 1941–1947 and the Raoul Wallenberg Case

In the years 1941–1948, thousands of people escaped across the Baltic Sea fromeastern Europe to Sweden, primarily from the Baltic states but also from theUSSR. On the basis of newly declassified Soviet correspondence throughencrypted cables between the Soviet foreign ministry and the Soviet legationin Stockholm for the years 1944–1947, this article addresses the Soviet-Swedishdiplomatic negotiatio

Plant versus Cow: Conflict Framing in the Ant/Agonistic Relegitimization of a Market

In this article we focus on the cultural mechanisms of market evolution accompanying the marketplace discord between a market actor and a dominant industry. We situate our analysis in the intersection between marketing and institutional theory and engage specifically with the constructs of legitimacy and framing strategies, but also with Chantal Mouffe’s political philosophy concept of agonistics.

En-ligt gängse rekommendationer ska kalla vindsutrymmen ventileras On a cold-ventilated attic, there is always an outer roof that must be tight against snow and meltwater, which means that there are also materials in the construction that make it more or less vapour tight. In traditional roofs, the waterproofing layer often consists of an asphalt-impregnated paperboard on a tonged and grooved board. As an alternative to the conventional solution, a less diffusion

Glucose-lowering action through targeting islet dysfunction in type 2 diabetes : Focus on dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibition

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibition is a glucose-lowering medication for type 2 diabetes. It works through stimulation of insulin secretion and inhibition of glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, resulting in lowered fasting and postprandial glycemia with low risk of hypoglycemia. As impaired insulin secretion and augmented glucagon secretion are key factors underlying hyperglyce

Recent advances in the mechanisms and treatment of immune thrombocytopenia

Primary immune thrombocytopenia is an autoimmune disease associated with a reduced peripheral blood platelet count. The phenotype is variable with some patients suffering no bleeding whilst others have severe bleeding which may be fatal. Variability in clinical behaviour and treatment responses reflects its complex underlying pathophysiology. Historically the management has relied heavily on immun

Decision-making during obstetric emergencies : A narrative approach

This study aims to explore how physicians make sense of and give meaning to their decision-making during obstetric emergencies. Childbirth is considered safe in the wealthiest parts of the world. However, variations in both intervention rates and delivery outcomes have been found between countries and between maternity units of the same country. Interventions can prevent neonatal and maternal morb

A Theory of Capitalist Slavery

The relationship between slavery and capitalism has become a renewed topic of debate, yet scholars have not been able to agree on a definition of capitalism. In this article I first clear up some misconceptions and situate the debate in the Marxian tradition from which it arose. I argue that while non-Marxian accounts of capitalism fail to explain the key social transformations that have accompani

Credit Market Discipline and Capitalist Slavery in Antebellum South Carolina

Historians and economists have increasingly identified capitalist patterns of behavior among antebellum slave owners, yet no consensus has emerged about the explanation for this finding. I argue that US slave owners were driven to behave like capitalists in part because of their dependence on credit. The ability of creditors to seize the land and slaves of insolvent debtors generated selection pre

A Classical-Marxian Model of Antebellum Slavery

This paper outlines a classical-Marxian model of the antebellum US economy. The model assumes that the mobility of capital tended to equalize the rate of profit between North and South, whilst land rents were minimized by an expanding frontier. Under these conditions slave prices are the capitalized present value of the excess surplus value produced by slaves. This excess surplus value arose becau
