222Rn and 210Pb in the Arctic summer air

As part of an extensive air chemistry programme, during summer 1980, on board the Swedish ice-breaker 'Ymer', levels of 222Rn (radon) and its long-lived daughters 210Pb and 210Po were measured. The radon was trapped on charcoal and the long-lived daugther products sampled on filters on a daily basis. In addition, short-lived progenies were followed continuously on the filters in order to achieve a

Holocene Hydrographic Variations From the Baltic-North Sea Transitional Area (IODP Site M0059)

Deoxygenation affects many continental shelf seas across the world today and results in increasing areas of hypoxia (dissolved oxygen concentration ([O2]) <1.4 ml/L). The Baltic Sea is increasingly affected by deoxygenation. Deoxygenation correlates with other environmental variables such as changing water temperature and salinity and is directly linked to ongoing global climate change. To place t

Risk for Endocarditis in Bacteremia with Streptococcus-Like Bacteria : A Retrospective Population-Based Cohort Study

Background: Many genera and species of Streptococcus-like bacteria (SLB) can cause infective endocarditis (IE), but little is known about the epidemiology of and the risk factors for IE in SLB-bacteremia. The aim of the study was to analyze this in a cohort of patients with SLB-bacteremia, focusing on Abiotrophia, Aerococcus, Gemella, and Granulicatella. We also evaluated whether published scoring

Intersex Mental Health

Av boken: The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of research on the mental health of sexual minorities-defined as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or same-gender attracted; as well as the mental health of gender minorities-defined as individuals who do not fully identify with their sex assigned at birth,

Monte-Carlo simulations of external dose contributions from the surrounding ground areas of residential homes in a typical Northern European suburban area after a radioactive fallout scenario

The emissions of 137Cs into the environment from the nuclear accidents in Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima in 2011 led to the need to decontaminate large areas to avert radiation doses to the population in the affected areas. To be able to perform cost-effective and sustainable remediation, knowledge is needed about how radiation doses can be minimized through optimized interventions such that the

Active video gaming improves body coordination in survivors of childhood brain tumours.

Purpose We investigated whether active video gaming (AVG) could bring about regular, enjoyable, physical exercise in children treated for brain tumours, what level of physical activity could be reached and if the children's physical functioning improved. Methods Thirteen children, aged 7-17 years, were randomised to either AVG or waiting-list. After 10-12 weeks they crossed-over. Weekly Internet c

What inner ear diseases cause benign paroxysmal positional vertigo?

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) originating from the posterior semicircular canal (pSCC) is a common vestibular disorder that is easy to diagnose and usually easy to treat. The majority of patients with BPPV have no known inner ear disease; they have "primary" or "idiopathic" BPPV. However, a minority does have objective evidence of an inner ear disease on the same side as the BPPV and

Mellan det förflutna och framtiden : Den sandinistiska revolutionen i Nicaragua

The theme throughout this book is the buildning up of a new societal structure and the conflicts encompassed in such a project. I discuss the societal changes in Sandinista Nicaragua by way of placing the revolution in a historic, political, and social context. Throughout the work process it became increasingly clear that the conflicts of the FSLN were in principal due to two factors. First, the F

Effects of Ageing on Adaptation during Vibratory Stimulation of the Calf and Neck Muscles.

Background: The ability to adapt and habituate based on prior experiences is important for human movement control, fall prevention and for the ability to enhance performance during various human activities. However, little is known about the ability for the elderly to adapt to balance perturbations in the lateral direction. Objective: To determine whether adaptation, i.e., the ability to adjust po

Mi'kmaq Landscapes : From Animism to Sacred Ecology

This book seeks to explore historical changes in the lifeworld of the Mi'kmaq Indians of Eastern Canada. The Mi'kmaq culture hero Kluskap serves as a key persona in discussing issues such as traditions, changing conceptions of land, and human-environmental relations. In order not to depict Mi'kmaq culture as timeless, two important periods in its history are examined. Within the first period, betw

Developing a regional superbus concept - collaboration challenges

The 2014 Swedish National infrastructure plan allocated funds to implement a “Regional Superbus concept”. The concept involves the upgrading a number of existing regional express bus services to make them function as an alternative to investing in regional rail. The Regional superbus concept is an attempt to adapt the BRT planning philosophy to the regional scale and the context of the region it s

Why childhood-onset type 1 diabetes impacts labour market outcomes : a mediation analysis

Aims/hypothesis: Previous studies show a negative effect of type 1 diabetes on labour market outcomes such as employment and earnings later in life. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these effects. This study aims to analyse the mediating role of adult health, education, occupation and family formation. Methods: A total of 4179 individuals from the Swedish Childhood Diabetes

The COST IRACON Geometry-Based Stochastic Channel Model for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication in Intersections

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) wireless communications can improve traffic safety at road intersections and enable congestion avoidance. However, detailed knowledge about the wireless propagation channel is needed for the development and realistic assessment of V2V communication systems. We present a novel geometry-based stochastic MIMO channel model with support for frequencies in the band of 5.2-6.2 G

Food safety knowledge, sources thereof and self-reported behaviour among university students in Sweden

International studies have noted shortcomings in food safety knowledge and behaviour among university students. In general students do not constitute a pronounced risk group but there are wider implications. In a foreseeable future some of them will become pregnant and a majority will be responsible for vulnerable groups in their near environment. A crucial question exists, therefore, about their

Radial band bending at wurtzite–zinc-blende–GaAs interfaces

The band offset between wurtzite (wz) and zinc-blende (zb) GaAs is an important fundamental parameter in polytype heterostructure engineering. Since the interface has a type-II band alignment, it is reasonably straightforward to measure the band offset using photoluminescence (PL) e.g. on nanowires containing heterostructures between wz and zb GaAs. It has, however, been found that the transition

The Paediatric Cataract Register (PECARE) : an overview of operated childhood cataract in Sweden and Denmark

Aim: To report basic epidemiological data concerning surgically treated childhood cataract in Sweden and Denmark. Methods: Data were derived from the Paediatric Cataract Register (PECARE), a binational, web-based surgical register representing Sweden and Denmark. All children operated before 8 years of age between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2013 were included. Age-specific prevalence per 100 0

Exercise related sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the young — Pre-mortal characterization of a Swedish nationwide cohort, showing a decline in SCD among athletes

Aims: To study the frequency, etiology, and premortal abnormalities in exercise-related sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the young in Sweden. Methods: All subjects with SCD in 10–35-year olds in Sweden during 2000–10, were included (n = 514). Information about each case was retrieved from death certifications, autopsy- and medical records. The number of SCD in athletes was compared to national figure

Characteristics of the Two Sequences Seen in the High-velocity Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram in Gaia DR2

In this study we use a sample of about 9 million SkyMapper stars with metallicities to investigate the properties of the two stellar populations seen in the high-velocity (V T > 200 km s-1) Gaia DR2 Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Based on 10,000 red giant branch (RGB) stars (out of 75,000 with high velocity), we find that the two sequences have different metallicity distribution functions; one peaks
