Methane emission bursts from permafrost environments during autumn freeze-in: New insights from ground-penetrating radar

Large amounts of methane (CH4) are known to be emitted from permafrost environments during the autumn freeze-in, but the specific soil conditions leading up to these bursts are unclear. Therefore, we used an ultrawide band ground-penetrating radar in Northeast Greenland in autumn 2009 to estimate the volumetric composition inside the soil through dielectric characterization from 200 to 3200 MHz. O

Ambiguous vitality: Gardening between desired heritage and despised invasiveness

Gardeners have always used plants of different origins, moving them around to new environments, working hard to make the plants survive and thrive under new conditions. In gardens, vitality is often regarded as an asset and a reason to cultivate certain plants. Many varieties that have spread over centuries are today regarded as ‘belonging’, as more or less ‘natural’, and even as heritage plants. Elucidation of Hydrogen Bonding Patterns in Ligand-Free, Lactose- and Glycerol-Bound Galectin-3C by Neutron Crystallography to Guide Drug Design

The medically important drug target galectin-3 binds galactose-containing moieties on glycoproteins through an intricate pattern of hydrogen bonds to a largely polar surface-exposed binding site. All successful inhibitors of galectin-3 to date have been based on mono- or disaccharide cores closely resembling natural ligands. Adsorption, desorption, and redox reactions at iron oxide nanoparticle surfaces

Soils play a critical role in the carbon (C) cycle by regulating the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, and correspondingly the Earth’s climate. However, there are still countless questions of how biological and geochemical soil processes affect the C cycle. To be able to predict future implications on the Earth’s climate, we need to understand these processes. Globally, soils store more C tIron oxide nanoparticles are involved in several important biogeochemical processes. The interfaces between aqueous solutions and iron oxide nanoparticle surfaces are found everywhere in nature, and the chemical and microbial processes occurring at these complex interfaces control e.g. nutrient and contaminant availability and transport. Recently, it has been shown that certain ectomycorrhizal (EC

Written in 1931 and associated with the broader Social Democratic agenda, its ideas represent a radical position aiming to shift architecture and society into

Simulating Magnetized Plasma using an Accelerated Finite Element-Boundary Integral Code

This paper describes an accelerated finite element-boundary integral code with support for complex media. The code is implemented in Python using several open source packages, and uses Numba just-in-time compilation for improved performance. To accelerate the boundary integral part of the code, a multilevel implementation of the adaptive cross approximation is used. Making statistics meaningful : The factorial survey as a teaching tool in social work education

ABSTRACTThe aim of this working paper is to expand the range of pedagogical tools for teaching statistics to social work students, by introducing an innovative tool that is based on the factorial survey and intended for practicing statistical analysis. The family-market wall contested : social workers managing contradictory ideals in marketised foster care

The task of assessing and contracting foster parents, usually undertaken by a child protection social worker, is increasingly framed by market arrangements. This article explores, from the perspective of social workers, whether and how this context poses challenges for foster care considerations. Theoretically informed by the sociology of emotions, the following research questions are explored: ho

Information literacy challenges in digital culture : Conflicting engagements of trust and doubt
