Biological growth on mineral façades

During the last years there has been reported considerable and rapid contamination on newly built rendered façades in Sweden due to biological growth. The problem is believed to occur mostly on façades of render applied on thermal insulation, but apart from this it is difficult to find clear relationships indication which façades might be infected. The aim of this project is to explain why certain

Simulation of stochastic integrals with respect to Levy processes of type G

We study the simulation of stochastic processes defined as stochastic integrals with respect to type G Levy processes for the case where it is not possible to simulate the type G process exactly. The type G Levy process as well as the stochastic integral can on compact intervals be represented as an infinite series. In a practical simulation we must truncate this representation. We examine the app

Determination of A(FB)(b) at the Z pole using inclusive charge reconstruction and lifetime tagging

A novel high precision method measures the b-quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Z pole on a sample of 3,560,890 hadronic events collected with the DELPHI detector in 1992 to 2000. An enhanced impact parameter tag provides a high purity b sample. For event hemispheres with a reconstructed secondary vertex the charge of the corresponding quark or anti-quark is determined using a neural network

Actions of sex steroids and corticosteroids on rabbit choroid plexus as shown by changes in transport capacity and rate of cerebrospinal fluid formation

The effect of betamethasone on choroid plexus transport and CSF formation in rabbits was studied. Following 5 days of daily treatment with betamethasone the CSF production rate was reduced by 43% as measured by ventriculo-cisternal perfusion with radioactive inulin. Accordingly, the Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity and the transport capacity in the choroid plexus, measured in terms of choline (10(-5) M)

Analysis of contact stresses due to combined bending and sliding of high performance fibres

Analytical formulas for the estimation of pressure and shear stresses due to friction on bent surfaces during the handling of fibers in the manufacture of industrial textiles and composites have been derived using the drive belt formula and Hertz contact stress relations. Experimentally measured at low speed, the forces and coefficients of friction give shear stresses in the same range as for the

Eager Evaluation Considered Harmful

In real-time systems potentially unbounded loops and lazy (late) evaluation are often avoided in order to improve predictability. This paper will show that a commonly suggested way to implement semaphores can lead to unnecessary blocking of high-priority tasks. It also presents a scheme with lazy evaluation and (potentially) unbounded loops that gives less blocking of high-priority tasks.

Is neonatal phototherapy associated with an increased risk for hospitalized childhood bronchial asthma?

This population-based register study examined if factors during the fetal and neonatal period influence the risk for the child to develop bronchial asthma (asthma). From the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register we identified children, born between 1987 and 1999, who had been hospitalized for asthma up to 2001. Thus, the outcome measure contains only hospitalized cases, not all children with asthma.

Duodenitis: a reliable radiologic diagnosis?

The authors performed a retrospective study of 50 patients with endoscopically diagnosed duodenitis who had undergone double-contrast upper gastrointestinal (GI) examinations. Duodenitis was diagnosed on the original radiographic reports in six of 37 patients (16%) with mild-to-moderate duodenitis, five of 13 patients (38%) with severe duodenitis, and 11 of 50 patients (22%) with all grades of duo
