A pilot study on the relationship between primary-school teachers’ well-being and the acoustics of their classrooms

Although teachers’ well-being and vocal health are affected by noise, research on classroom sound environment from the teachers’ perspective is scarce. This study investigated the relationship between teachers’ well-being and classroom acoustics. The possible influence of teachers’ age, experience, teaching grade and class size on the relationship was also investigated. In this study, well-being r

Perspective on soundscapes : Verb constructions in descriptions of everyday sounds

This study explores how listeners use verb constructions to describeeveryday sounds. It considers (i) how the verb constructions provide Gestaltto events in the form of activities, processes and states, and (ii) how theconstructions correspond to different aspects of a soundscape (soundsources, acoustic properties, and listener reactions). We found that verbconstructions primarily describe sound s

The nature of light and its interaction with matter

This chapter provides a physical background to the following ones. It describes the particle and wave properties of light and the diffraction, polarization, refraction, reflection, and absorption of light and statistics of photon emission and absorption. Planck’s law of heat radiation is described in various mathematical and graphical ways. One section is devoted to a simplified description of the

Low-Profile Wideband Metasurface Antenna With Polarization Reconfiguration via Resistor Control and Reduced RCS for Enhanced Wireless Communication

This paper presents a low-profile, single-layer, broadband, polarization-reconfigurable metasurface antenna with a low radar cross section (RCS). The design leverages characteristic mode analysis (CMA) applied to a staggered elliptical-shaped unit cell metasurface. The unique arrangement of the elliptical-shaped elements, oriented at 90°, promotes mode fusion through CMA, effectively reducing RCS.

Impact of wind turbine sound on annoyance, self-reported sleep disturbance and psychological distress

Purpose of the research: The present government in the Netherlands intends to realize a substantial growth of wind energy before 2020, both onshore and offshore. Wind turbines, when positioned in the neighborhood of residents may cause visual annoyance and noise annoyance. Studies on other environmental sound sources, such as railway, road traffic, industry and aircraft noise show that (long-term)

Simulation of the acoustics behind a wall due to a moving vehicle

The influence of a barrier on the acoustic field is investigated using an expansion of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Large Eddy Simulations (LES) is used to account for the acoustical sources and the equation for the acoustic density fluctuation accounts for the propagation of the acoustics waves. This combined approach enhances numerical efficiency while maintaining good accuracy. The

My aim is to show how unemployed youth, in Sweden and Denmark, during the years 1992-1996, were coping with their situation as unemployed, by focusing on their motivation for work, their conception of work, and their alternative action. Swedish youth have for a number of decades lived with a labour market policy which has had full employment as a goal and included active measures. Danish youth hav

How could the Viking Sun compass be used with sunstones before and after sunset? Twilight board as a new interpretation of the Uunartoq artefact fragment

Vikings routinely crossed the North Atlantic without amagnetic compass and left their mark on lands as far away as Greenland, Newfoundland and Baffin Island. Based on an eleventh-century dial fragment artefact, found at Uunartoq in Greenland, it is widely accepted that they sailed along chosen latitudes using primitive Sun compasses. Such instruments were tested on sea and proved to be efficient h

Targeting interventions for displacement minimization in opinion dynamics

Social influence is largely recognized as a key factor in opinion formation processes. Recently, the role of external forces in inducing opinion displacement and polarization in social networks has attracted significant attention. This is in particular motivated by the necessity to understand and possibly prevent interference phenomena during political campaigns and elections. In this paper, we fo

OH-thermometry using laser polarization spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy in the OH A-X (1,0) band

Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and polarization spectroscopy (PS) is used for OH-thermometry utilizing the off-diagonal A-X (1,0) band. Both techniques are used simultaneously in order to allow a comparison of the results. For deriving temperature information from the spectra, three methods are employed: (1) a contour fit method comparing experimental and calculated spectra, (2) spectral fitting

Detection of HCl in a Premixed CH4/O-2/Ar Flame Seeded with CHCl3 Using Mid-IR Polarization Spectroscopy

Mid-infrared polarization spectroscopy (IRPS) was applied to detect HCl in flames. For the first time, sensitive and nonin trusive HCl detection with a manner of high spatial- and temporal-resolution in harsh reactive gas flow has been demonstrated in this work. In an atmospheric pressure premixed CH4/O-2/Ar flat flame, trace level HCl was prepared by seeding small amount chloroform through the Ar

From Weak to Strong Sound Event Labels using Adaptive Change-Point Detection and Active Learning

We propose an adaptive change point detection method (A-CPD) for machine guided weak label annotation of audio recording segments. The goal is to maximize the amount of information gained about the temporal activations of the target sounds. For each unlabeled audio recording, we use a prediction model to derive a probability curve used to guide annotation. The prediction model is initially pre-tra

Acoustic waves in variable sound speed profiles

An important topic in the area of airborne sound propagation is the prediction of sound propagation above an impedance ground with an atmospheric profile whose sound speed varies with height. Even if this problem is simple in concept, it leads to complications for general velocity profiles. This work illustrates the existence of a large class of realistic atmospheric profiles for which analytical

Implementing Audio Localization using a Network of Body Worn Cameras

Audio localization often utilizes arrays of microphones to estimate the origin of sounds, where the recorded audio is usually processed on one central machine. In this thesis, the goal is instead to perform audio localization with dual microphones on distributed body worn cameras, where transmission of recorded audio is not permitted. Therefore, two separate algorithms are created: One performs d

Mid-infrared polarization spectroscopy of C2H2: Non-intrusive spatial-resolved measurements of polyatomic hydrocarbon molecules for combustion diagnostics

Polarization spectroscopy in the mid-infrared (IRPS) has been applied to the detection of acetylene molecules making use of the asymmetric C-H stretching vibration at around 3 μm. The infrared laser pulses were produced through difference frequency generation in a LiNbO3 crystal pumped by a Nd:YAG and dye laser system. By directly probing the ro-vibrational transitions with IRPS, sensit
