Enclosures and Fertility in Southern Sweden. Were peasants consciously regulating their decisions regarding family size?

This study analyzes the total fertility rate for twenty parishes in southern Sweden from 1785-1840 and its relationship with the enclosure movement. The analysis shows that the total fertility rate increases after enclosures took place. The explanation of these results is that peasants forsaw a profitable economic future because of the change in property rights and the change in the way agricultur

Credit default swaps and CreditGrades: Evidence from the Nordic markets

This study examines and compares theoretical CDS spreads created by a structural framework with empirical CDS spreads. The model employed is the CreditGrades model based on the Merton framework from 1974 which calculate default probabilities and credit spreads from balance sheet and equity data. The aim is to measure how well the model can explain the observed CDS spreads and if it has any predict

The Impact of Indirect Cost-Reducing Family Policy on Fertility in Canada

Fertility declines have been taking place across Canada in a number of different provincial family policy contexts since the 1960’s. Although previous studies have assessed the impact of direct cost-reducing family policies in Canada, there is no body of work measuring the impact of indirect cost-reducing family policies across the county. The objective of this paper is to determine whether provin

The success of DSS in a police organization. An evaluation study

Decision support systems (DSS) are widely used in both public and private sectors.

Music Supply Behavior in the Digital Era

Due to the increase in file-sharing in later years, there is a wide concern among music industry professionals and others that the music supply will be negatively affected by the decreasing sales of pre-recorded music. However, almost no research effort has been put into measuring the change in the supply of music. Using two indicators of music supply, this paper investigates how the supply from i

Stock Price Reaction to Announcements of Capital Structure Changes - From an Industry Leverage Ratio Perspective

In this paper, we investigate how important a firm’s proximity to the industry debt ratio is to its stock price performance. To achieve this goal, event study methodology is applied on stock price reactions upon the announcement of seasoned equity offerings. Depending on whether the offering moves the debt ratio of the firms “closer to” or “away from” the industry median leverage ratio, the averag

Gemensam pension? En studie av gifta pars pensionsbeslut

Uppsatsen diskuterar äldre gifta pars pensionsbeteende i Sverige.

Volatility and Contagion effects originating from the financial sector: An analysis of economic sectors in two different stock market downturns

The essay applies the methodology put forward in Baur (2003) with some modifications and extensions in order to investigate on contagion and spillover effects originating from the financial sector in European and U.S. equity markets during the crisis following the “dot-com” bubble in 2000-2003 and the financial crisis of 2007-2009. A clear distinction between spillover and contagion effects is dra

The purpose of the thesis is to retrieve the correlation between treasury securities of different maturities and the stock market and find significant variables to explain this relationship. Correlation time series were retrieved and used as dependent variables in a multivariate regression in order to find significant explanatory variables. The theory includes prior research done on the relationsh

Transition and Fertility in Central and Eastern Europe

Shortly after the start of the transition from planned to market economy in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, an overall drastic fertility decrease began in all the countries of this region. This thesis focuses on the theoretical and empirical connection between transition and fertility. With the use of Gary Becker´s New Home Economics as a theoretical framework, fertility d

ARE INTERNATIONAL STOCK MARKETS INTEGRATED WELL?: EVIDENCE FROM THE US, GERMANY AND TURKEY

This paper examines the interactions among the three stock markets of the US, Germany and Turkey by applying Vector Autoregressive Model (VAR). Besides causality, impulse response and variance decomposition analyses are done. One of the main findings is that between the US and German stock markets information is transmitted fast and they are quite well integrated. Another result is that, as expect

Portföljinvestering med daglig riskminimering

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if it is meaningful to use a portfolio strategy that minimizes the portfolio risk every day, when the investment horizon is 10 years. To minimize the portfolio risk a EWMA (Exponentially Weighted Moving Average) method is used to calculate the conditional variance-covariance matrix. This matrix is used to calculate the portfolio weight that minimizes th

The “Effects-Based” Approach of the Commission to the Application of Article 82 to Exclusionary Abuses: Is the New Approach Really Economics Friendly?

The purpose of this thesis is to criticize the Commission’s approach to the application of Article 82 to the exclusionary abuses of the dominant firms. It is a very interesting and hot topic as the attitude of the Commission and the European Courts have many implications on the consumer welfare and total efficiency in common market and innovation capacity and the economic development of the Europe

Tillväxt och energikonsumtion

Energy is an important component in production. Today, energy comes from mainly non-renewable resources such as petrol and coal, which carry with them negative externalities on climate, which in turn affects human life and long term growth. To prevent this climate change the utilization of these resources needs to be reduced. This can be done by replacing non-renewable resources with renewable res
