Isolation of two tissue-specific Drosophila paired box genes, Pox meso and Pox neuro

Two new paired domain genes of Drosophila, Pox meso and Pox neuro, are described. In contrast to the previously isolated paired domain gnees, paired and gooseberry, which contain both a paired and a homeodomain (PHox genes), Pox meso and Pox neuro possess no homeodomain. Evidence suggesting that the new genes encode tissue-specific transcriptional factors and belong to the same regulatory cascade

On particle multiplicities distribution in three-jet events

A thorough verification of the distinct differences in the properties of quark and gluon jets is considered as one of the most instructive tests of the basic ideas of QCD. In the real life experiments such a comparison appears to be quite a delicate task and various subtle issues require further theoretical efforts. In this paper we discuss in detail the possibility to extract the theoretically ad

Structure of two genes at the gooseberry locus related to the paired gene and their spatial expression during Drosophila embryogenesis.

The gooseberry (gsb) locus contains two closely linked genes, BSH9 and BSH4, which are structurally related to each other and to the paired (prd) gene. Sequence analysis of genomic DNA and cDNA shows that BSH9 and BSH4 can encode proteins of 427 and 452 amino acids, respectively. The structural homology between these two putative proteins and the prd protein consists essentially of two domains for

Generating Non-Projective Word Order in Statistical Linearization

We propose a technique to generate non-projective word orders in an efficient statistical linearization system. Our approach predicts liftings of edges in an unordered syntactic tree by means of a classifier, and uses a projective algorithm for tree linearization. We obtain statistically significant improvements on six typologically different languages: English, German, Dutch, Danish, Hungarian, a

Conservation of a large protein domain in the segmentation gene paired and in functionally related genes of Drosophila

Extending our search for homologous domains of the Drosophila paired gene, two closely linked genes at the gooseberry locus have been isolated. Both genes are expressed with a single segment periodicity but with different spatial and temporal expression patterns. While the transcripts of one gene appear earlier and are equally distributed between ectoderm and mesoderm, those of the second gene acc

Structure of the segmentation gene paired and the Drosophila PRD gene set as part of a gene network

The sequence of paired, a pair-rule gene required for segmentation in Drosophila, is presented. A search for genes with domains homologous to the paired gene was initiated and three homologues from a set of 12 were characterized with respect to temporal or spatial expression and sequence homologies. All four are transcribed in early development, one in the oocyte and during cleavage stages in the

Isolation of the paired gene of Drosophila and its spatial expression during early embryogenesis

We have cloned the paired gene of Drosophila melanogaster, a pair-rule gene required for the establishment of proper segmentation. The transcriptional pattern in young embryos shows developmental polarities along the antero-posterior and dorso-ventral axes. Transcripts, initially expressed with a double-segment periodicity, switch to a single-segment repeat during syncytial blastoderm.

(Re)ranking Meets Morphosyntax: State-of-the-art Results from the SPMRL 2013 Shared Task

This paper describes the IMS-SZEGED-CIS contribution to the SPMRL 2013 Shared Task. We participate in both the constituency and dependency tracks, and achieve state-of-theart for all languages. For both tracks we make significant improvements through high quality preprocessing and (re)ranking on top of strongbaselines. Our system came out first for both tracks.

Phosphate permeases of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The PHO84 and PHO89 genes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae encode two high- affinity phosphate cotransporters of the plasma membrane. Hydropathy analysis suggests a secondary structure arrangements of the proteins in 12 transmembrane domains. The derepressible Pho84 and Pho89 transporters appear to have characteristic similarities with the phosphate transporters of Neurospora crassa. The Pho84 protein

Discovery of Teneurins

Teneurins were first discovered and published in 1993 and 1994, in Drosophila melanogaster as Ten-a and Ten-m. They were initially described as cell surface proteins, and as pair-rule genes. Later, they proved to be type II transmembrane proteins, and not to be pair-rule genes. Ten-m might nonetheless have had an ancestral function in clock-based segmentation as a Ten-m oscillator. The turn of the

Using two jet events to understand hadronization

While the hard phase of the strong interaction is well described by perturbative QCD, the soft hadronization phase is less understood. Benefiting from the high statistics from e+e− experiments at the Z0 resonance, it is possible to impose strong two-jet cuts on the data without losing the statistical significance. In these events perturbative activity is suppressed and hadronization effects can be

Understanding the complex metallic element Mn. II. Geometric frustration in β−Mn, phase stability, and phase transitions

In the preceding paper [D. Hobbs, J. Hafner, and D. Spišák, Phys. Rev. B 68, 014407 (2003)], we have started an ab initio spin-density-functional study of the complex structural and magnetic phase behaviors of Mn by a detailed investigation of α−Mn. It was shown that the complex crystalline and noncollinear antiferromagnetic structures are the results of the conflicting tendencies to maximize simu

Towards Robust Linguistic Analysis using OntoNotes

Large-scale linguistically annotated corpora have played a crucial role in advancing the state of the art of key natural language technologies such as syntactic, semantic and discourse analyzers, and they serve as training data as well as evaluation benchmarks. Up till now, however, most of the evaluation has been done on monolithic corpora such as the Penn Treebank, the Proposition Bank. As a res

Understanding the complex metallic element Mn. I. Crystalline and noncollinear magnetic structure of α−Mn

Manganese is an element with outstanding structural and magnetic properties. While most metallic elements adopt a simple crystal structure and order magnetically—if at all—in a simple ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic configuration, the stable phase of manganese at ambient conditions, paramagnetic α−Mn, adopts a complex crystal structure with 58 atoms in the cubic cell. At a Néel temperature of T

ICARUS -- An Extensible Graphical Search Tool for Dependency Treebanks

We present ICARUS, a versatile graphical search tool to query dependency treebanks. Search results can be inspected both quantitatively and qualitatively bymeans of frequency lists, tables, or dependency graphs. ICARUS also ships with plugins that enable it to interface with tool chains running either locally or remotely.

Exploring links between witnessed and instigated workplace incivility

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore how witnessing workplace incivility from coworkers and supervisors relates to instigating incivility toward others. A further aim was to investigate if witnessed incivility is indirectly related to instigated incivility via perceived stress and low job satisfaction. An additional aim was to study if control, social support and job embeddedness moderat
