The Fifth International Workshop on Ice Nucleation phase 2 (FIN-02) : Laboratory intercomparison of ice nucleation measurements

The second phase of the Fifth International Ice Nucleation Workshop (FIN-02) involved the gathering of a large number of researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology's Aerosol Interactions and Dynamics of the Atmosphere (AIDA) facility to promote characterization and understanding of ice nucleation measurements made by a variety of methods used worldwide. Compared to the previous workshop

A 10-mW mm-Wave Phase-Locked Loop With Improved Lock Time in 28-nm FD-SOI CMOS

This paper presents a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) phase-locked loop (PLL), with an output frequency centered at 54.65 GHz. It demonstrates a mode-switching architecture that considerably improves the lock time, by seamlessly switching between a low-noise mode and a fast-locking mode that is only used during settling. The improvement is used to counteract the increased lock-time caused by cycle-slipsThis paper presents a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) phase-locked loop (PLL), with an output frequency centered at 54.65 GHz. Two Ultra-Low Power MM-Wave Push-Pull VCOs in FD-SOI CMOS

Two low-power mm-wave voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) designed in a 28-nm fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) CMOS process are demonstrated, using a push-pull differential architecture. Measurement show that the first VCO has a 10.8% tuning rage centered at 30.3 GHz, and the second has a 8.9 % tuning range at 58.7 GHz. A 24GHz, 18dBm, Broadband, Three Stacked Power Amplifier in 28nm FDSOI

A three stacked power amplifier implemented in 28nm fully depleted silicon-on- insulator complementary metal oxide semi-conductor technology (FDSOI CMOS) is presented. It has a differential architecture with on-chip input and output transformer baluns. On CCE estimation of factor-augmented models when regressors are not linear in the factors

In empirical research it is often of interest to include non-linear functions of the explanatory variables, such as squares or interactions, in the specification. A popular technique to estimate such models in the presence of common factors is the Common Correlated Effects (CCE) methodology. However, this approach assumes that the regressors are linear in the factors, which is not the case if vari

Determination of genomic N3-methylthymidine in human cancer cells treated with nitrosamines using capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence.

Methylating substances alter DNA by forming N3-methylthymidine (N3mT), a mutagenic base modification. To develop a sensitive analytical method for the detection of N3mT in DNA based on capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection (CE-LIF), we synthesized the N3mT-3'-phosphate as a chemical standard. The limit of detection was 1.9 amol of N3mT, which corresponds to one molecu

Sensitive detection of hydroxymethylcytosine levels in normal and neoplastic cells and tissues.

A new sensitive analytical method using capillary electrophoresis with laser induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) was applied for the simultaneous detection of DNA methylation and hydroxymethylation levels in human cancers of different origin. DNA hydroxymethylation, measured as 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) levels, was decreased in gliomas with mutation in the isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) gene whe

Soundtracking: Music listening practices in the digital age

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to further develop the conceptualization of music consumption in the digital age by examining how contemporary music listening is interweaved with other practices, how it shapes those practices and how it is in turn shaped by them.Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on extensive, qualitative interviews with 15 Swedish music consumers. During the cou

Nanoscale Scanning Probe Thermometry

We present further development and application examples of a thermometry approach capable of producing real-space temperature maps of operating nanoscale devices with sub-10nm resolution. The technique relies on scanning thermal microscopy with a resistive element coupled to a cantilevered tip. The resistive element acts both as integrated heater and as sensing element. A modulated temperature fie

Cost-effectiveness of internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy and physical exercise for depression

Background Both internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy (ICBT) and physical exercise are alternatives to treatment as usual (TAU) in managing mild to moderate depression in primary care.Aims To determine the cost-effectiveness of ICBT and physical exercise compared with TAU in primary care.Method Economic evaluation of a randomised controlled trial (N = 945) in Sweden. Costs were estimated by

Cause-specific mortality in osteoarthritis of peripheral joints

PURPOSE: To estimate cause-specific mortality in osteoarthritis patients compared to the general population.METHODS: We identified all residents in southern Sweden aged 45-84 years in 2003. Through the Skåne Healthcare Register we identified those diagnosed with osteoarthritis in peripheral joints between 1998-2003. We followed all residents from 2004 until relocation outside of the region, death,

Discipline or external balance? : The choice of international monetary systems in Europe

While there is a huge literature on exchange rate systems since the classical gold standard, less research has been devoted to comparisons of the different arguments that guided the choices. While the origin of the international gold standard in the 1870s was a result of silver coins disappearing from circulation due to rising silver prices, the gold standard has later been interpreted as a quest

Extracellular and intracellular small-molecule galectin-3 inhibitors

Galectin-3 is a carbohydrate binding protein which has important roles in cancer and immunity. Potent galectin-3 inhibitors have been synthesized, for experimental purposes and potential clinical use. As galectin-3 is implicated in both intra- and extracellular activities, permeability of galectin-3 inhibitors is an important parameter determining biological effects. We compared the cellular uptak
