Nitrous oxide production under varied C/N-ratio and DO in an SBR treating digester supernatant

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas formed during biological wastewater treatment under aerobic and anoxic conditions. Two reasons for high N2O emissions are low oxygen concentration during nitrification and low carbon/nitrogen-ratio during denitrification. In this full-scale study of N2O emissions from a sequencing batch reactor for treating digester supernatant, the oxygen concentration was Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas formed during biological wastewater treatment under aerobic and anoxic conditions. A Social Safety Net? Incentives for sharing political information online

This paper explores the relationship between sensitivity to rejection and using social media for political activity. We hypothesize that individuals who are afraid of being rejected behave differently when using social media than the ones who are less sensitive to rejection. We argue that “rejection sensitive” individuals are less likely to share political information in social media, since the re

Comparison of measured (XRPD) and modeled (A2M) soil mineralogies : A study of some Swedish forest soils in the context of weathering rate predictions

Quantitative soil mineralogy has been identified as a key factor influencing PROFILE weathering estimates, and is often calculated with normative methods, such as the “Analysis to Mineralogy” (‘A2M’) model. In Sweden and other countries, there is a large request for accurate base cation weathering estimates in order to establish how sustainable harvest of biomass should be performed in the future.

Dynamic assembly of molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles

Manipulation of specific binding and recycling of materials are two important aspects for practical applications of molecularly imprinted polymers. In this work, we developed a new approach to control the dynamic assembly of molecularly imprinted nanoparticles by surface functionalization. Molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles with a well-controlled core-shell structure were synthesized usin

Molecular subtype profiling of urothelial carcinoma using a subtype-specific immunohistochemistry panel

Molecular subtypes of bladder cancer (BC) can be determined by relatively small immunohistochemistry panels both for non-muscle invasive (NMI) and muscle invasive (MI) tumors. For analysis of NMI tumors, as few as two markers are needed, although classification is dependent also on pathological grade and histological evaluation. The result is a classification into the three tumor-cell phenotypes o

Continuous multicomponent quantification during supercritical fluid extraction applied to microalgae using in-line UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy and on-line evaporative light scattering detection

A quantitative methodology based on in-line UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy and on-line evaporative light scattering detection for supercritical fluid extraction is proposed. The method was applied to the extraction of carotenoids, chlorophyll A, ergosterol and total lipids from microalgae. One regression technique and two curve resolution techniques were applied on the absorption spectroscopy data

Brain damage and behavioural disorders in fish induced by plastic nanoparticles delivered through the food chain

The tremendous increases in production of plastic materials has led to an accumulation of plastic pollution worldwide. Many studies have addressed the physical effects of large-sized plastics on organisms, whereas few have focused on plastic nanoparticles, despite their distinct chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Hence our understanding of their effects on ecosystem function, behaviour

Ikea's almost fabless global supply chain : A rightsourcing strategy for profit, planet, and people

Fabless production, meaning manufacturing without owning fabrication facilities, has been suggested as a novelty by the semiconductor industry. However, Ikea, the global furniture company based in Sweden, has successfully been producing their furniture in a fabless fashion since 1955. This paper explores how Ikea manage and control its almost fabless production to reach the company’s targets for s

Effect of structural design on traffic-induced building vibrations

Population growth and urbanization results in densified cities, where new buildings are being built closer to existing vibration sources, and new transportation systems are constructed closer to existing buildings. Potential disturbing vibrations are one issue to consider in planning urban environments and densification of cities. Vibrations can be annoying for humans but also for sensitive equipm

Flooring-systems and their interaction with furniture and humans

Flooring-system designs may be sensitive in terms of their vibrational performance due the risk that serviceability-limit-state problems may be encountered. For evaluating the vibrational performance of a flooring system at the design stage, decisions must be made by the engineer in charge of computations. Passive humans and/or furniture are often present on a floor. Typically, these masses and th

Agricultural land use determines functional genetic diversity of soil microbial communities

Microbial communities play a major role in the degradation of soil organic matter (SOM) in soils. Despite its significance, the functional diversity of the highly diverse microbial communities is poorly understood. To address this, we applied a recently developed technique, captured metagenomics, to determine the effects of land-use on the functional genetic diversity of genes involved in the carb

Adsorption and photolysis of trimethyl acetate on TiO2(B)(001) studied with synchrotron radiation core level photoelectron spectroscopy

We present a synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy study of the adsorption and photooxidation of trimethyl acetate (TMA) on TiO2(B)(001). The TiO2(B)(001) substrate was realized in the form of 2 nm thick film on Au(111). The TMA species adopt the bidentate bonding configuration, as expected for carboxylic acids on TiO2, but cannot coordinate to all surface Ti ions due to steric hindranc

Thrombin-derived host defence peptide modulates neutrophil rolling and migration in vitro and functional response in vivo

Host defence peptides (HDPs) derived from the C-terminus of thrombin are proteolytically generated by enzymes released during inflammation and wounding. In this work, we studied the effects of the prototypic peptide GKY25 (GKYGFYTHVFRLKKWIQKVIDQFGE), on neutrophil functions. In vitro, GKY25 was shown to decrease LPS-induced neutrophil activation. In addition, the peptide induced CD62L shedding on

Genetic Interactions with Age, Sex, Body Mass Index, and Hypertension in Relation to Atrial Fibrillation : The AFGen Consortium

It is unclear whether genetic markers interact with risk factors to influence atrial fibrillation (AF) risk. We performed genome-wide interaction analyses between genetic variants and age, sex, hypertension, and body mass index in the AFGen Consortium. Study-specific results were combined using meta-analysis (88,383 individuals of European descent, including 7,292 with AF). Variants with nominal i

Rapid global ocean-atmosphere response to Southern Ocean freshening during the last glacial

Contrasting Greenland and Antarctic temperatures during the last glacial period (115,000 to 11,650 years ago) are thought to have been driven by imbalances in the rates of formation of North Atlantic and Antarctic Deep Water (the 'bipolar seesaw'). Here we exploit a bidecadally resolved 14C data set obtained from New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis) to undertake high-precision alignment of key cl

Thermodynamic assessment and binary nucleation modeling of Sn-seeded InGaAs nanowires

We have performed a thermodynamic assessment of the As-Ga-In-Sn system based on the CALculation of PHAse Diagram (CALPHAD) method. This system is part of a comprehensive thermodynamic database that we are developing for nanowire materials. Specifically, the As-Ga-In-Sn can be used in modeling the growth of GaAs, InAs, and InxGa1−xAs nanowires assisted by Sn liquid seeds. In this work, the As-Sn bi

Extraction of soluble arabinoxylan from enzymatically pretreated wheat bran and production of short xylo-oligosaccharides and arabinoxylo-oligosaccharides from arabinoxylan by glycoside hydrolase family 10 and 11 endoxylanases

The enzymatic, ecofriendly pretreatment of wheat bran with α-amylase from Bacillus amyloliquifaciens or B. licheniformis at 90 °C for 1.5 h followed by Neutrase at 50 °C for 4 h, aqueous liquefaction at 121 °C for 15 h and ethanol precipitation enabled the production of soluble arabinoxylan (AX) with purity of 70.9% and 68.4% (w/w) respectively. Process alternatives tried, to simplify the process

Health Among Schoolchildren From the School Nurse’s Perspective

The aim of the study was to investigate Swedish school nurses’ perceptions of schoolchildren’s health. The study is based on two national surveys in which school nurses responded to questions about schoolchildren’s health in 2015 (n = 181) and 2005 (n = 129). A statistical comparison showed that physical and mental health of schoolchildren in high-risk areas was perceived as worse than that of chi
