CogSeminar: "Interaction Design (IxD) and Cognitive Semiotics" (Karolina Olga Nord, University of Borås)
We are happy to have Dr. Karolina Olga Nord on a link from Borås exploring the potential value of cognitive semiotics for interaction design in digital applications, as well as in education. She has let us know that she wishes to discuss how central cognitive semiotic concepts like intentionality and sign use can be applied in this context. All are welcome to join digitally from 15:00, with cameras on, or in the usual seminar room H402.
This seminar will consist of a shorter presentation of the state of teaching semiotics within the context of Interaction design (IxD) and meaning making relevant to Information management. My aim is to unfold a broader discussion on potentials and challenges that are faced when introducing cognitive, semiotic, and cognitive semiotic theories to new students of various socio-cultural backgrounds. How can we teach cognitive semiotics within more practically aimed educational programs that are theoretically interdisciplinary and heterogeneous?
The presentation will address central concepts related to the study and crafting of interaction design in digital environments, as found in mobile applications, websites, smart signs, digital games, computer programs, car interfaces, etc.
About the presenter:
Karolina Olga Nord is a lecturer at the University of Borås, program coordinator of the Bachelor of Strategic communication and information and a teacher of semiotics and interaction design. She holds a Master’s degree in media and communication theory from the University of Södertörn. She has been participating in CogSem seminars for a few months after realizing that her scope for teaching and researching semiotics is closer to the perspectives of cognitive semiotics rather than the social semiotics from which her formal education stems.
