Days absent from work as a result of complications associated with type 2 diabetes: Evidence from 20 years of linked national registry data in Sweden

A total of 413 000 people with T2D aged <66 years, comprising 4.9 million person‐years, was included. The crude proportion with any absence was higher among those with T2D compared to controls (47% vs. 26%) in the index year, and the median (IQR) number of days was higher (223 [77;359] vs. 196 [59;352]) if any absence. Regression analyses showed that complications per se were a key driver of days

Diabetes mellitus as a risk factor for compression neuropathy: a longitudinal cohort study from southern Sweden

Compression neuropathies (CN) in the upper extremity, the most common being carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE), are frequent among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Earlier studies have shown contradicting results regarding DM as a risk factor for CN. Thus, the aim of the present population-based, longitudinal study was to explore potential associations between DM, C

Associations between perfluoroalkyl substances and serum lipids in a Swedish adult population with contaminated drinking water

Exposures to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have shown positive associations with serum lipids in previous studies. While many studies on lipids investigated associations with perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), there are only a few studies regarding other PFAS, such as perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS). The purpose of the current study is to investigate i

Incidence of distal radius fracture in a general population in southern Sweden in 2016 compared with 2001

In this population-based study, we compared the incidence of distal radius fracture in 2016 with that in the same region’s adult general population in 2001 using radiographs to identify fracture cases. We showed that the incidence decreased by 24% in 2016 compared with 2001 indicating an important development. New publication in Osteoporosis International

Swedish national survey on MR safety compared with CT: a false sense of security?

Data were collected within a web-based questionnaire on safety in clinical MR environments with CT for comparison. Data reported MR and CT safety incidents (human injury, material damage, and close calls), incident severity, and confidence of participants in incident-reporting systems. Non‐immune hydrops fetalis was rare in Sweden during 1997‐2015, but cases were associated with complications and poor prognosis

There were 309 cases of NIHF at birth corresponding to an incidence of 1.6 per 10 000, lower than in previous studies. NIHF was more frequent in mothers aged ≥35 years and with a history of stillbirth. Preterm delivery occurred in 77.7% in the NIHF group, including 31.7% before 32 weeks of gestation. Multiple births and Caesarean sections were reported more frequent in the NIHF group. NIHF was ass

Psychometric evaluation of the Swedish Quality of Dyadic Relationships scale – homogeneity and construct validity

The Quality of Dyadic Relationships is a self‐assessment scale used to evaluate various aspects of relationship quality. Psychometric evaluation by the developers of the instrument has led to a nontested amended version. Further psychometric testing is thus warranted, and the aim of this study was to evaluate homogeneity, construct validity (in terms of concurrent, discriminant and known‐groups va

Viruses- difficult to control (in Swedish)

A podcast from "Vetenskap & hälsa" Podd: Virus – svåra att kontrollera – Vetenskap och Hälsa (vetenskaphalsa.se) A podcast from "Vetenskap & hälsa" Ebola fever is a viral disease with a very high mortality rate but despite several outbreaks it has never spread globally. An HIV infection, which in the 1980s led to the deadly disease AIDS can today be treated and has become a chronic disease. But de

Fall-related mortality in southern Sweden

We examined all death certificates (DCs, n=2 01 488) in adults recorded in the Skåne region during 1998–2014. We identified all fall deaths using International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes (W00-W19) and calculated the mortality rates by age and sex. Temporal trends were evaluated using joinpoint regression and associated causes were identified by age-adjusted and sex-adjus

Association between cerebral microbleeds and hypertension in the Swedish general population “Good Aging in Skåne” study

Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) on MRI are frequent in healthy aging individuals but precede ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and dementia. Different etiologies have been suggested for nonlobar CMB, which have a stronger connection to hypertension (HT) than do lobar CMB. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of CMB and the association between nonlobar/lobar CMB and different blood pressure (BP)

The Long-Lasting Influenza: The Impact of Fetal Stress During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic on Socioeconomic Attainment and Health in Sweden, 1968–2012

The 1918 influenza pandemic had not only a massive instant death toll but also lasting effects on its survivors. Several studies have shown that children born in 1919, and thus exposed to the H1N1 virus in utero, experienced worse health and socioeconomic outcomes in older ages than surrounding birth cohorts. New publication in Demography.Read more here.

Risk of being born preterm in offspring of survivors with childhood or adolescent central nervous system tumor in Sweden

An increasing number of patients with central nervous system (CNS) tumor could survive to reproductive age. However, it is largely unknown whether the history of CNS tumor might affect pregnancy outcome. We aimed to explore the risk of being born preterm among children of CNS tumor survivors. Gender influence on the bipolar disorder inpatient length of stay in Sweden, 2005–2014: A register-based study

The influence of gender on bipolar disorder is controversial and it is unclear if inpatient care differs between men and women. Here, we investigate for gender differences in the inpatient length of stay for Swedes admitted for bipolar disorder and explore other factors that could explain any observed association. Weight and height separated provide better understanding than BMI on the risk of revision after total knee arthroplasty: report of 107,228 primary total knee arthroplasties from the Swedish Knee Arthroplasty Register 2009–2017

Obesity defined as increased BMI is commonly associated with higher revision rates following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We examined the effect of BMI on the rate of revision after TKA, for both infection and other reasons, and analyzed weight and height separately to provide better understanding of the risk profile. Mortality patterns in long-term survivors of childhood or adolescent central nervous system tumour in Sweden

A growing number of young patients with central nervous system (CNS) tumour survived for more than five years. However, these long-term survivors might be at risk of multiple late effects thus leading to a higher risk of late mortality. We aimed to explore the risk of late mortality and the pattern of mortality among long-term survivors of childhood or adolescent CNS tumour. New publication in Spr
