The Transformative Potential of the Craft Imaginary - A Study on Craft Brewing

Craft has been a steady adversary to the proliferation of industrialization. As an imaginary of embodied work, mainly driven by intrinsic motivation and by a strive for excellence, craft is increasingly re-emerging in discussions on improving current forms of work. A common theme across research on craft is its potential to address alienation as one of the main pathologies of modern work. We study

OSBP-mediated PI(4)P-cholesterol exchange at endoplasmic reticulum-secretory granule contact sites controls insulin secretion

Insulin is packaged into secretory granules that depart the Golgi and undergo a maturation process that involves changes in the protein and lipid composition of the granules. Here, we show that insulin secretory granules form physical contacts with the endoplasmic reticulum and that the lipid exchange protein oxysterol-binding protein (OSBP) is recruited to these sites in a Ca2+-dependent manner.

Brain energy metabolism : A roadmap for future research

Although we have learned much about how the brain fuels its functions over the last decades, there remains much still to discover in an organ that is so complex. This article lays out major gaps in our knowledge of interrelationships between brain metabolism and brain function, including biochemical, cellular, and subcellular aspects of functional metabolism and its imaging in adult brain, as well

Impact of Added Thermal Insulation on Cold Attics in Apartment Buildings in Temperate Climate – A Review

Added insulation in cold attics can be an efficient and profitable energy efficiency measure. Simultaneously, added insulation increases the risk of a decreased temperature in the attic, thereby increasing the risk of high relative humidity and moisture damage. This paper collocates and reviews previous publications that deal with the impact of added insulation on attics as a renovation measure. T

Collective Intelligence Function in Extreme Weather Conditions : High-Resolution Impact Assessment of Energy Flexibility on Building Energy Performance

Collective intelligence (CI) in demand-side management (DSM) can enhance the flexibility of urban energy systems. Extreme climates cause intensively high loads on the urban energy systems resulting in power outages. To avoid this, quick responses are needed from buildings to adjust their operation in favor of the grid. Most of the available approaches are computationally expensive. CI-DSM offers a

Weaponized disinformation spread and its impact on multi-commodity critical infrastructure networks

The well-publicized disinformation campaigns surrounding recent elections, pandemic vaccination adoption, as well as supply-chain disruptions and shortages have made historical problems of disinformation more apparent. When disinformation targets transportation infrastructure, supply chains can be disrupted, resulting in commodities shortages such as food and fuel, consequently jeopardizing the he

The legal aspects of cruise ship passenger contracts

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the legal issues relating to cruise ship passenger contracts, their nature and salient features, parties to the contract and their rights and obligations. Claims arising out of passenger carriage subject to applicable law and contracts containing standard terms and conditions are addressed. It is rare for passengers to examine the terms and conditions of t

Focal Adhesion Kinase Orchestrates GLUT4 Translocation and Glucose Uptake via Cytoskeletal Turnover in Primary Adipocytes

ABSTRACT Intact insulin signaling and glucose transport in adipocytes are crucial to maintaining whole-body energy metabolism. Focal adhesion kinase stands as a central intracellular protein facilitating signaling between the extracellular matrix and the cytoplasm, thereby regulating cellular metabolism. Here, we have investigated the role of focal adhesion kinase in adipocyte glucose transport us

Thrombotic risk determined by ABO, F8, and VWF variants in a population-based cohort study

Background Von Willebrand factor (VWF) and coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) plasma levels are associated with increased risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Objectives This study aimed to determine the thrombotic risk of rare and common variants of 27 genes linked to VWF or FVIII plasma levels in genome-wide association studies. Methods Exon sequences of 27 genes linked to plasma levels of VWF or

Entangled disasters : Relations and vulnerabilities in the transformation and dissolution of Kiruna and Malmberget

This chapter discusses the role of placed-based relational entanglements in disasters and argues that relations play an important part in shaping how disasters unfold. Exploring the case of mining induced displacement in Sweden’s Malmfälten region – where two cities, Kiruna and Malmberget, and several villages are being moved or razed to make way for expanding mines – the chapter demonstrates how

Infrastructuring the policymaking, funding and positioning of libraries : unpacking tensions in public library policies in three European cities

Public libraries are increasingly acknowledged as important social infrastructures that can stimulate a sense of community, social cohesion and mental wellbeing. This paper investigates how (inter)national, provincial and local policies conceptualise and fund libraries as social infrastructures in three European cities. Drawing on 32 semi-structured interviews with library management and associatiPublic libraries are increasingly acknowledged as important social infrastructures that can stimulate a sense of community, social cohesion and mental wellbeing. Will the Intervention Benefit My Client? Helping Social Workers to Answer the Question Using Indicators of Clinically Meaningful Change

Social workers strive to provide the best support to each client, making it crucial to consider not just group-level effects of interventions but also individual outcomes. While empirical evidence often stems from group-based analyses, these offer limited insights into individual change, which is key for tailoring interventions. The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of individual-le

Closed and open structures of the eukaryotic magnesium channel Mrs2 reveal the auto-ligand-gating regulation mechanism

The CorA/Mrs2 family of pentameric proteins are cardinal for the influx of Mg2+ across cellular membranes, importing the cation to mitochondria in eukaryotes. Yet, the conducting and regulation mechanisms of permeation remain elusive, particularly for the eukaryotic Mrs2 members. Here, we report closed and open Mrs2 cryo-electron microscopy structures, accompanied by functional characterization. M

Profiling of insulin-resistant kidney models and human biopsies reveals common and cell-type-specific mechanisms underpinning Diabetic Kidney Disease

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of end stage kidney failure worldwide, of which cellular insulin resistance is a major driver. Here, we study key human kidney cell types implicated in DKD (podocytes, glomerular endothelial, mesangial and proximal tubular cells) in insulin sensitive and resistant conditions, and perform simultaneous transcriptomics and proteomics for integrated a

Host defense peptides at the crossroad of endothelial cell physiology : Insight into mechanistic and pharmacological implications

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), particularly host defense peptides (HDPs), have gained recognition for their role in host defense mechanisms, but they have also shown potential as a promising anticancer, antiviral, antiparasitic, antifungal and immunomodulatory agent. Research studies in recent years have shown HDPs play a crucial role in endothelial cell function and biology. The function of endot

Examining senior citizens’ in public transport : The role of digitalization, environmental concern, and traveler satisfaction

Increasing the share of travelers using public transport is one way to address environmental problems such as carbon dioxide emissions. Senior citizens represent an increasingly important group in this transition, as they are increasingly mobile and make up a large share of the population. In this paper, we investigate senior citizen's mobility decision-making, focusing on public transport. Throug
