Fibrinolysis and blood loss in major arthroplasty. The effect of tranexamic acid

Blood loss in major arthroplasty may be abundant and often necessitates blood transfusions. These may transmit disease and entail an immunological burden to the recipient. After trauma and surgery, the fibrinolytic system reacts with a short period of increased activity, followed by a fibrinolytic shut-down. In this thesis we investigated the impact of the early fibrinolytic activation on blood

Investigations of Heavy Elements in Am and HgMn stars

The relationship between the HgMn and Am classes of chemically peculiar stars has been investigated primarily by observing abundances of heavy elements, including Pr, Nd, Hg, Tl and Bi. The main objective of the investigation has been to gather observational evidence to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms producing the abundance anomalies of these stars, and to establish the relations

The Return of YHWH : The Tension between Deliverance and Repentance in Isaiah 40-55

The theology of Isaiah 40-55 has two seemingly contradictory aspects: the tension between the consolatory message of deliverance, and the harsh tone of accusation. In this part of the Book of Isaiah, YHWH's return to his people is demonstrated through the accumulation of declarations about YHWH's ability and his will to deliver the Israelites from the exile. At the same time, the Israelites are ex

Causes and consequences of individual variation in anti-predator traits

Predation imposes a potent evolutionary force on prey, moulding the evolution of traits and diversification of species, and can furthermore have powerful ecological consequences. We know that different species vary in how they cope with their natural enemies, and, consequently, a huge range of anti-predator defences are displayed in nature. Yet there is a growing recognition that, if we zoom into

Development of the Lund AMS facility for the detection of Al-26 -- with applications in plant ecology

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is a highly sensitive technique to count atoms. The method has a high efficiency, which makes it possible to measure small samples in a relatively short time, usually less than an hour. During the work for this thesis, methods have been developed to detect Al-26 at the Lund AMS facility. This includes the design, installation and testing of a new injector that i

L68Q cystatin C: Expression, cellular transport and turnover of the cystatin C variant forming amyloid in patients with Hereditary Cystatin C Amyloid Angiopaty (HCCAA)

Hereditary cystatin C amyloid angiopathy (HCCAA) is a disorder characterised by multiple strokes in young adults, resulting in paralysis and dementia. The disease is caused by a mutation in the gene coding for the peptidase inhibitor cystatin C. The mutation causes an amino acid substitution Leu68 -> Gln in cystatin C (L68Q cystatin C) which results in deposition of the protein in the blood vessel

Dementia with Lewy bodies - a clinical and neurological approach

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a dementia disorder, clinically characterized by fluctuating cognitive impairment, attention deficits, visual hallucinations, parkinsonism and other neuropsychiatric features. Sensitivity to neuroleptic medication is a common finding. In the present study 24% of 200 autopsied cases, within the Lund longitudinal prospective dementia study fulfilled the clinical di

The role of PKC in neuronal differentiation and in regulation of the actin cytoskeleton during neurite outgrowth

Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine/threonine kinases subgrouped into classical (α, βI, βII, γ), novel (δ, ε, η, θ) and atypical (ζ, ι/λ) isoforms. PKC can be activated by phorbol esters, and prolonged treatment of neuroblastoma cells has been shown to induce neuronal differentiation with neurite outgrowth and increased expression of neuronal genes. Here we show that a classical PKCβ isof

Walking Along, Wandering Off and Going Astray A Critical Normativity Approach to Walking as a Situated Architectural Experience

There is a lack of attention toward the diversity in experiences of architecture that are expressed through walking. Through the application of autoethnography and critical perspectives of queer and feminist theory, this dissertation develops a method for investigating experiences of architecture in regard to the activity of walking. In addition, this thesis addresses the influence of form, materi

Relatives of alcoholics. Studies of hardship, behaviour, symptomatology and methods of intervention

This thesis concerns relatives of alcoholics. The aims were to investigate relatives’ situation concerning hardship, coping behaviour and psychiatric wellbeing. Two different information techniques (one standardized technique and one individually adjusted technique) were compared in order to reach relatives of alcoholics for information of available support. No significant differences were found i

Interactions of human C4BP with Bordetella pertussis and Streptococcus pyogenes

Many microorganisms have developed mechanisms to protect themselves against attack from the complement system of the host. One possible mechanism for a microorganism to evade complement attack is to bind a human complement regulator, which may allow the microorganism to down-regulate complement activation. This thesis describes studies of such interactions between human C4b-binding protein (C4BP),

Självmordsförsök bland narkotikamissbrukare

The aim of this thesis is to describe suicide attempts in a group of drug abusers who previously had received treatment of their addiction. Another aim is to interpret and analyse the life situations that the individual associates with the suicide attempt. The dissertation is based on interviews conducted on two occasions with 92 drug abusers, 62 men and 30 women. The majority of the drug abusers

Predator-prey interactions in freshwater systems: The importance of chemical communication

Predator released chemical cues provide a valuable source of information to prey organisms that can be used to alter their behaviour in order to reduce predation risk. In this thesis, I have examined under what circumstances chemical cues may be used by prey, and if prey discriminate between different cues. I have also investigated the role of predator experience in prey ability to detect and resp

Plant major intrinsic proteins - functional implications of expression and localisation studies

Plant water channels are members of the very old Major Intrinsic Protein (MIP) family, with representatives in bacteria, fungi, animals, and plants. The genome of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana contains 35 MIP genes. Based on protein sequence comparisons, the MIP family has been divided in four subfamilies: the PIP (Plasma membrane Intrinsic Protein), the TIP (Tonoplast Intrinsic Protein), t

Protease proforms as hematopoietic regulators

A common feature in myeloid leukemia is suppression of normal hematopoiesis, leading to infections, bleeding and anemia. It has been suggested for a long time that leukemic cells possess a growth-advantage by overproducing an inhibitor - a leukamia associated inhibitor. Such an inhibitor has been characterized in leukemic cells as well as subpopulations of normal bone marrow and blood cells, sugge

Improvement of the AMS-technique and applications to 3H and 59Ni Measurements

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is a highly sensitive technique for counting atoms. Its main advantage in comparison with radiometric methods is the smaller amount of sample required (by a factor of a thousand). The method has a high efficiency and requires only some ten mg of sample material. The radioisotope 59Ni is of great importance in nuclear waste management in the nuclear industry. Thi

Endosonography of the anal spincter in women with particular reference to obstetric sphincter tears

The aim of this thesis was to study the endosonographic morphology of the anal sphincter in women, to establish an endosonographic sphincter defect score and to relate it to anal incontinence and anal sphincter pressure. A further aim was to determine intra-observer and inter-observer agreement in detection of endosonographic anal sphincter defects. An endosonographic anal sphincter defect classif

Fuel and fly: adaptations to endurance exercise in migrating birds

Birds on migration alternate between consuming fuel stores during flights and accumulating fuel stores during stopovers. This thesis highlights some of the ways in which migrating birds have adapted to the different demands of fuelling and flight. Most of the time on migration is spent at stopover sites accumulating fuel stores. To minimise the total time spent on migration, birds should fuel up a
