En möjlig värld: En tematisk studie av Lars Gustafssons 1990-talsromaner

"En möjlig värld" explores how questions of moral standards and ontology are discussed explores how questions of moral standards and ontology are discussed and represented in three of Lars Gustafsson's novels in a search for a world that is conceivable - in terms of moral philosophy, as well as ontology. Initially, a theoretical foundation is constructed, based on the assumption that fictional tex

Patterns of Destiny : Hindu Nāḍī Astrology

Like all divination, Hindu astrology (jyotisa) is concerned with central religious issues such as man’s relation to the world, moral responsibility, and the revelation of a coherent divine order underlying human experience. Comprising a descriptive as well as a prescriptive aspect, jyotisa allows for both prediction and the exercise of free will. This double nature enables a seamless

Asymptotic Expansions of Crossing Rates of Stationary Random Processes

The crossing rate of a stationary random process is a valuble tool when studying crest hight distributions and maxima of sea level elevation. This thesis considers two approximation techinques for cases when the crossing rate cannot be exactly computed. Both techniques use an asymptotic expansion, and the first and second order terms in these expansions are given explicitly. Paper A describes how

Uncertainty and Risk Analysis in Fire Safety Engineering

Two Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) methods are presented which can be used to quantify the risk to occupants in, for example, a building in which a fire has broken out. The extended QRA considers the inherent uncertainty in the variables explicitly. The standard QRA does not consider the uncertainties in the variables and must be complemented by a sensitivity analysis or an uncertainty analysis.

Normstödjande strukturer : Miljötematiken börjar slå rot i skolan

This thesis explores the various influence processes that take place in connection with the dawn of a new theme - the environment - in today's society. Society has declared that schools, a place designed for the intentional influence of children and youths, shall utilise the new environmental theme in its practice. It focuses on the initiation process of the environmental theme in schools from the

Rättssäkerhet och tvångsvård : En rättssociologisk studie

Compulsory treatment and care is regulated by the Care of Alcoholics and Drug abusers Act (Lag (1988:870) om vård av missbrukare i vissa fall, LVM). The regulation's main purpose is to motivate persons with addictive problems to voluntarily participate in the treatment of their problems. The compulsory care shall continue for a maximum period of six months in special treatment centres (the so-call

Utbildningskontextens betydelse för lärandeprocesser

This thesis is about the importance of context to learning processes in computer-supported flexible education. The purpose is to develop knowledge about how students in an upper secondary class experience and act in a computer-supported flexible educational environment and how the experienced context affects the students' learning processes. An ethnographic application involving theories of learni

Decolonizing the Viking Age 1

Decolonizing the Viking Age 1 argues that the Scandinavian “Viking Age” can be seen as a system of knowledge constructed in the late 19th century and in its basic structures maintained up to the present day. This system of knowledge was heavily influenced by the nationalistic and evolutionary ideas of its time of making and may be described as a colonialism of the past. The book follows the making

Derivative Prices for Models using Levy Processes and Markov Switching

This thesis contributes to mathematics, finance and computer simulations. In terms of mathematics this thesis concerns applied probability and Lévy processes and from the financial point of view the thesis concerns derivative pricing. Within these two areas several simulation techniques are investigated. The thesis is organized as follows. The first two chapters are to be considered as reviews on
