Infrequent sporophyte production maintains a female-biased sex ratio in the unisexual clonal moss Hylocomium splendens

P>1. Sex ratios in unisexual bryophytes are most often female biased, whereas male-biased sex ratios predominate in unisexual seed plants. This 'bryophyte paradox', i.e. that sex ratios are biased in favour of the sex associated with the highest reproductive costs, has remained unexplained. 2. Analysis of sex-ratio patterns via the influence of sex distribution on population growth rates (lambda)

Value at Risk & Expected Shortfall. En empirisk analys av riskmåttens parametrar

The purpose of this paper is, with the help of the historical simulation and bootstrapping methods, to establish the optimal periods for Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall forecasts. Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall are two well-used risk measures in finance which tell us how much we can expect to lose on a particular investment with a certain probability over a specific period of time. The

EMA-based head movements and phrasing : a preliminary study

In this paper we describe present work on multimodal prosody by means of simultaneous recordings of articulation and head movements. Earlier work has explored patterning, usage and machine-learning based detection of focal pitch accents, head beats and eyebrow beats through audiovisual recordings. Kinematic data obtained through articulography allows for more comparable and accurate measurements,

Possibilities with Probabilistic Methods for Dynamic Building Energy Simulations using Stochastic Input Data : – Initial Analysis

As observed in earlier studies, there is evidently a performance gap between the predicted annual energy use from building performance simulations based on traditional deterministic methods compared to the monitored annual energy use of a building. The hypothesis is that using a probabilistic method makes it possible to consider the uncertainties in the input data and quantify the overall uncertai

Nobelpris

Load Reduction for Timely Applications in the Cloud

In many IoT applications, sensor data is sent remotely to be processed, but only the freshest result is of interest. In this paper we investigate a feedback mechanism that aborts the processing of stale data at the remote end to reduce the load and save costs. The process is approximated by an M/M/∞ queueing system with a feedback loop. We find the exact expression of the average computational tim

Observing judicial work and emotions : using two researchers

Observation is an important component of research to examine complex social settings and is well-established for studying courtroom dynamics and judicial behaviour. However, the many activities occurring at once and the multiple participants, lay and professional, make it impossible for a sole researcher to observe and understand everything occurring in the courtroom. This article reports on the uObservation is an important component of research to examine complex social settings and iswell-established for studying courtroom dynamics and judicial behaviour. Persistent homology and the shape of evolutionary games

For nearly three decades, spatial games have produced a wealth of insights to the study of behavior and its relation to population structure. However, as different rules and factors are added or altered, the dynamics of spatial models often become increasingly complicated to interpret. To tackle this problem, we introduce persistent homology as a rigorous framework that can be used to both define For nearly three decades, spatial games have produced a wealth of insights to the study of behavior and its relation to population structure. A window to the past : Living standards in historical perspective

Real wages are a convenient, useful, and powerful way to learn how life was like in the past. In this chapter we start by reviewing the methodology behind real wage estimations and their history. Then we look at the how real wages have contributed to shedding light on major issues in economic history such as the onset of modern economic growth, the Great Divergence, and colonialism in the Americas

Geriatrics

About Geriatrics Since the first professorship in geriatrics was founded in Malmö 1987, over 200 refereed papers have been published from the geriatric unit. The geriatric research group have developed from the beginning of the 1990s and at current around 30 post-graduates and co-workers (within several different professions) are working in our studies surrounding cognition and dementia, geriatric

Economic burden of obesity : A systematic literature review

Background: The rising prevalence of obesity represents an important public health issue. An assessment of its costs may be useful in providing recommendations for policy and decision makers. This systematic review aimed to assess the economic burden of obesity and to identify, measure and describe the different obesity-related diseases included in the selected studies. Methods: A systematic liter

Post hoc interventions and the General Data Protection Regulation

Post hoc interventions rely on having access to certain personal data - such as the gender, age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation of the persons being evaluated - in order to detect and correct for prejudice. This brings these interventions into possible tension with pertinent data protection legislation, which might restrict the processing of said data. We discuss the compatibility of post hoc i
