My intention with this project was to investigate the possibilities and difficulties with working in Vietnam as a Scandinavian designer. As a means of the investigation I was going to develop products in collaborations with local handicraft manufacturers using locally sourced materials. In the end it turned out to be so much more than only investigating possibilities and difficulties; it turned o

The Swedish power system, similar to those of other European countries, is currently transitioning from fossil to renewable. Simultaneously the electrification and digitalization of societies all over the world sets high standards for the availability of power. As a result the power systems experience certain limitations and issues. This can partially be accredited to the decline of available disp

TOYS & MEMORIES What makes some toys great? This was the question that started this entire project. When remembering toys from ones childhood there are always some toys that are more commonly referenced. Were these toys “the best toys” and more importantly: what traits made them better, and can they be replicated? A toy is something created with the main purpose of being a catalyst for ones i

Both the European Union and the Swedish government consider the need for evidence-based practice and public awareness crucial in nature conservation work. When authorities perform nature conservation projects, they need to hire machine contractors through public procurement. However, there is no way for the authorities to demand high competence in nature conservation work in the public procurement

There is a long tradition, especially in phycology, of using 18S rDNA sequences in inferring phylogenies, in particular for higher taxonomic level analysis. 18S like ITS2 displays a conserved RNA secondary structure which could be used simultaneously with the sequence to increase the amount of information available when inferring phylogenetic relationships. In ITS2 research sequence-structure phyl

Sweden’s history of nature conservation spans over 100 years and is an important part of what has characterized the nature that we have today. During those 100 years, there have been several different kinds of actions to preserve the Swedish nature. 20 years ago, Sweden became a member of the European Union and the authorities had to face the challenge of enforcing requirements that came from foll

Eutrophication is a serious problem that is affecting the Baltic Sea and its streams connecting to it. It brings a negative impact on the biodiversity, the streams recreational value, sport fishing and also the overall ground water quality. Recently, there have been many restoration attempts on streams across Sweden, to try to repair the streams and prevent them from leaking nutrients and minerals

The central area of Stenshuvud national park in southern Sweden was surveyed regarding the lichen species composition and distribution. Similar qualitative investigations of the area have been carried out in the years 1934 and 1987, although this survey further included a quantitative survey of relative frequency per species to enable more accurate monitoring in the future. Together, the three s

Cooperation between unrelated males and females can be read through three lenses that make different predictions about who should be rewarded: biological markets, audience-directed signalling, and reciprocity rules that require no bookkeeping. Trying to separate these frameworks observationally is a challenge because control of a resource normally travels with dominance. Across 30 provisioning eve

Long-distance bird migrants face three main constraints: time, energy, and predation risk during migration. As a result, their migratory strategies may be altered. Since migratory birds spend most of their time refueling during migration, they are particularly vulnerable to predation risk at stopover sites. The trade-off between energy intake and predation risk is widely acknowledged. However, the

To escape competition for food, South African dung beetles roll balls away from the dung pile of origin along straight-line paths. To keep their desired courses, the beetles rely on flexible integration of external orientation cues. This supports robust orientation even under challenging daytime conditions. Here, I studied the orientation precision driven by this flexible cue integration in the du

The variation in length of antlers in deer (Cervidae) has been attributed predominantly to body sizes and the intensity of sexual selection. However, the diversity in antler morphology goes beyond lengths. Using a time-calibrated phylogeny of Cervidae and a newly collected data of antler lengths and volumes, we investigated the evolution of antler morphology within a multi-variate phylogenetic com
