Predicting the redshifts of distant astronomical objects with machine learning
NASA Swift satellite and AI unravel the distance of the farthest gamma-ray bursts. In this project, LUSEM Statistics Professor Malgorzata Bogdan, consulted on the choice of statistical methods and the interpretation of the results. The research article was published in Astrophysical Journal Letters on 24 May. Astronomers are now using AI, quite literally, to measure the expansion of our universe.

AI-assisted interviews increase accuracy in diagnosing mental illness
A new study shows that an AI assistant can conduct assessment conversations with patients with higher accuracy than the rating scales used in healthcare today. In the study, 303 participants were interviewed by the AI assistant Alba, who then suggested possible psychiatric diagnoses. In addition to being interviewed by an AI assistant, the participants also had to fill out standardized rating scal

Artist takes up residency at MAX IV
For six months, artist Jennifer Rainsford will be exploring MAX IV – one of the world’s largest research laboratories for synchrotron light. Inside the ring-shaped MAX IV building on the outskirts of Lund, extremely intense X-ray light known as synchrotron light is produced. The light, which is not visible to the naked eye, is used by researchers from around the globe to study materials, molecules

Commonly used pesticides are still harming bees
A new study from Lund confirms that pesticides commonly used in farmland significantly harm bumblebees. Data from 106 sites across 8 European countries show that despite tightened pesticide regulations, more needs to be done.Despite claims of the world's most rigorous risk assessment process, the use of approved pesticides in European agricultural landscapes still negatively affects non-target or

We are now starting to identify profile areas*
We are now initiating an open and transparent process to develop profile areas in order to be well prepared when it is time to submit an application for national profile areas, and also to become even better at getting together to address common issues at the University. The Swedish government states in both the Research Bill and in the autumn’s budget proposal that it intends to allocate part of

Another million grant - for research about active living
There will be another five million Swedish kronor for CASE's research. Project leader Björn Slaug and the co-applicants recently received a grant from Forte for the welfare project SUN-AGE: Supporting neighborhood and living environments for aging populations, which will begin after the turn of the year and run until 2026. What does a grant of this size mean? – Now we can finally get started and c

Correlation between height and risk of thrombosis
This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. In a new study from Lund University in Sweden, researchers investigated the risk factors for blood clots, i.e. venous thromboembolism (VTE). The results show a strong correlation between height and VTE risk for both women and men. The risk increases with height. Tall people have a higher hydrostatic pressure in the bo

Using sugar to detect malignant tumours
This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Ordinary sugar could become a contrast agent of the future for use in magnetic resonance tomography examinations of tumours. Malignant tumours show higher sugar consumption than surrounding tissue. “If sugar replaces metal as a contrast agent in the body, it can also have a positive psychological effect and make patie

Research in a new light – first up is the story of Bluetooth and 5G
On 11 May, Storydesk was launched – a new initiative from Lund University focusing on in-depth stories about research and innovation. The first story is about three decades of wireless communication, beginning with an adjunct professor’s persistent idea to cut the headphone cable once and for all. This focus on in-depth stories addresses a need that has become apparent in the university-wide work

Diabetes research collaboration can pave the way for innovation
Metformin is often described as the first-line medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. However, not all patients respond to the drug. Researchers at Lund University have discovered a combination of biomarkers that can predict which patients will benefit from the treatment. This work is now continuing in order to confirm the results in a larger patient group, with the intention of developi

It is time to put biodiversity on the agenda – five Lund researchers on the challenges for COP15
Just over two weeks after the climate summit in Egypt, the leaders of the world’s countries are meeting again, this time to address another acute crisis facing humanity – the loss of biodiversity. The issue is less well-known than the climate crisis and no framework corresponding to the Paris agreement is in place – something that many people hope the December summit in Montreal will rectify. It i
