Plant Inducible Responses to Damage: Evolution and Ecological Implications

Abstract Inducible plant responses to damage, i.e. inducible defence responses and compensatory growth responses, are theoretically examined in an evolutionary and ecological context. Inducible defences are generally considered to be beneficial under conditions of low risk of herbivory and when initial damage is moderate. This study indicate that under these circumstances, localized defence respon

Towards a Taxonomy of Planning and Scheduling Methods in the Context of Construction Management.

Planning and scheduling are considered as one of the most difficult but most important processes from perspectives of project management. These processes involve implementation of a widerange of planning methods used by different organizations with various levels of planning knowledge. The planning methods for scheduling can be classified as traditional methods (e.g. line of balance, Gantt chart a

Free Volume and Mesopores in Polymer Nanocomposites

Intergrated system for interstitial photodynamic therapy

To develop PDT beyond treatment of thin superficial tumors, to also be an efficient treatment alternative to deeply located and/or thick tumors, a system based on interstitial illumination using multiple fibers has been developed. Conditions that could benefit from such a treatment modality are for instance malignant brain tumors and tumors in the oral cavity. In interstitial PDT one needs to use

The Hebrew Waw-Consecutive as a North-West Semitic Augment

The classical problem of the Hebrew consecutive tenses is here attacked from a different angle: that of comparative language typology. The article explores parallel typological developments between West Semitic and early Indo-European as pertains to the creation of verbal forms by means of adding an “augment” or temporalizing particle to otherwise Aktionsart- or aspect-based morphological construc

Long term in-situ measurements of displacement, temperature and relative humidity in a multistorey residential clt-building

In a multi-storey residential housing project comprising of four 8-storey timber buildings, the bottom storeybeing designed with concrete and storeys 2-8 in timber, the vertical relative displacement, the temperature and the relativehumidity (RH) along one vertical channel in the external wall of one building has been monitored. Measurements startedduring construction and presented herein are r

Robust synchronisation of unstable linear time-invariant systems

A framework based on the gap metric and integral quadratic constraints (IQCs) is developed for analysing robust synchronisation of heterogenous linear time-invariant networks. Both the agents and the communication channels are allowed to be dynamic and unstable. Structural properties of the uncertainty are described by IQCs and exploited in synchronisation analysis as a means to reduce conservatis

Diatom blooms and associated vegetation shifts in a subarctic peatland : responses to distant volcanic eruptions?

We test the hypothesis that rich occurrences of diatoms observed at transitions between major peat units representing different vegetation communities in a peat sequence from subarctic northern Sweden reflect responses to acid deposition from the Samalas AD 1257 and Laki AD 1783/1784 eruptions. We observe sudden changes in the mire ecosystem and thereby in the trophic status and biogeochemical cyc

Revision of river terrace geochronology in the Orawa-Nowy Targ Depression, south Poland : insights from OSL dating

Geochronologies of intramontane depression (basin) fluvial sedimentation enable to identify through time periods of alluviation and river erosion, and date fault movement. For these purposes the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating has been applied to evaluate and to develop a geochronological framework of river terraces. We study the age of river terrace deposits of the Czarny Dunajec R

Asymmetry in the super-allowed β-transitions of the A=9 isobars

We report here on the recent β-decay studies of the A = 9 isobar made at ISOLDE/CERN. Mirror beta transitions in the A=9 chain are compared and a large asymmetry factor is deduced for the transitions to high excitation energy in 9Be (11.8 MeV) arid 9B (12.2 MeV) fed in the β-decay of 9Li and 9C respectively. It is shown that the asymmetry is not due to experimental problems or differences in the m

Biorefineries in Sweden: Perspectives on the opportunities, challenges and future: Biorefineries in Sweden

A growing political interest in the development of biorefineries is being shaped by climate change and a need to develop economically viable substitutes (i.e., fuels, products and chemicals) to those produced in traditional oil refineries. The pulp and paper industry in Sweden has been stagnating and it is therefore potentially promising to integrate biorefining into its activities as one way of d

Savoring Life with an Unsympathetic World View : Sabbath as Rest and Contemplation in Gospel of Thomas Logion 27

This article discusses the enigmatic logion 27 in the Gospel of Thomas. It argues that preconceived notions of the text being “Gnostic” have affected previous interpreta- tions of how the Sabbath is portrayed in logion 27. A discussion follows concerning the many different interpretations of the elusive second part of the logion and the phrase σαββατίσητε τὸ σάββατον/ⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲙ̄ⲡⲥⲁⲙⲃⲁⲧⲟⲛ ⲛ̄ⲥⲁⲃⲃⲁⲧⲟⲛ. T

Recognition : A Short History

During the past decade there has been a resurgence of interest in the concept of recognition in international theory. Once the narrow concern of social theorists, the concept of recognition is nowadays invoked in at least three different senses in order to explain three different things. First, it is commonly used to explain how states and their identities are shaped by interaction, and how the mo

Potent pro-inflammatory and profibrotic molecules, osteopontin and galectin-3, are not major disease modulators of laminin α2 chaindeficient muscular dystrophy

A large number of human diseases are caused by chronic tissue injury with fibrosis potentially leading to organ failure. There is a need for more effective anti-fibrotic therapies. Congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A (MDC1A) is a devastating form of muscular dystrophy caused by laminin α2 chaindeficiency. It is characterized with early inflammation and build-up of fibrotic lesions, both in patie
