Predictors of Parkinson's disease dementia : towards targeted therapies for a heterogeneous disease

Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) has become an increasing area of research as treatments for the motor features of Parkinson's disease (PD) have improved and the population of patients with PD grows and ages. If predictors could be used to identify a sub-population of patients at risk of developing an early PDD then research into its neuropathological basis and treatment could be more effectivel

Knowledge and Acknowledgement in the Politics of Memory of the Armenian Genocide

Is the Armenian Genocide a strictly historical matter? If that is the case, why is it still a topical issue, capable of causing diplomatic rows and heated debates? The short answer would be that the century old Armenian Genocide is much more than a historical question. It emerged as a political dilemma on the international arena at the San Stefano peace conference in 1878 and has remained as such

Age increases brain complexity

This study investigated age-related changes in the human brain function using both traditional EEG analysis (power spectra) and the correlational dimension, a measure reflecting the complexity of EEG dynamics and, probably, the complexity of neurophysiologicaI processes generating the EEG. Assuming that the accumulation of individual experience is determined by the formation of functionally relate

Following Protein Dynamics in Real Time during Crystallization

The process of protein crystallization from aqueous protein solutions is still insufficiently understood. During macroscopic crystal formation, occurring often on time scales from a few hours to several days, protein dynamics evolves on the molecular level. Here, we present a proof of concept and a framework to observe this evolving diffusive dynamics on the pico- to nanosecond time scale, associa

Performing ambiguous policy : How innovation events simultaneously perform change and collaborative order

The aim of this article is to analyse how innovation policy is staged and legitimised through the dramatised social process of an event. The context is taken from an annual event, Skåne Innovation Week, which is arranged by the regional innovation system in Skåne, Sweden. Innovation systems often organise similar events internationally, which appear to play a key role in performing inter-organisat

Reflections on research collaborations: A call for Nordic research on music education, sustainability, and democracy

Following the EU declaration from 2016 on schools as the most crucial places for societal change needed in order to strengthen democracy, this chapter discusses Nordic music education and music education research within the context of shared challenges in times of rapid demographic changes. Resting on emerging results from the authors’ research projects, the first theme to be discussed is music ed

Simplicity vs. complexity in the logistics discipline - a paradigmatic discourse

Today one could argue that most of the logistics research available has a strong connection to the positivistic paradigm where there is a great emphasis on simplicity in both the research conducted and in the solutions produced. The overall ability to design, plan and control is promoted by the researchers to a great extent. Consequently, firms invest money, time and resources in solutions, based

Modelling the evolution of a bipartite network - Peer referral in interlocking directorates

Abstract in UndeterminedA central part of relational ties between social actors is constituted by shared affiliations and events. The action of joint participation reinforces personal ties between social actors as well as mutually shared values and norms that in turn perpetuate the patterns of social action that define groups. Therefore the study of bipartitenetworks is central to social science.

Developing a method for driving the solar control mechanism selection

A method was developed, which drives the selection of appropriate solar control mechanisms based on theanalysis of overheating due to solar heat gains. The aim of the method is to maintain adequate thermalcomfort levels in highly glazed spaces. Two thermal comfort models, Predicted Mean Vote and AdaptiveModel, were chosen to set the thermal comfort boundaries included in the method. Moreover, in o

Channel capacity analysis of different mobile antenna array topologies in the outdoor urban environment for 5g mm wave system

The 15 and 28 GHz frequency bands have been identified as interesting candidates for future 5G cellular communication systems. In this paper, based on ray-tracing simulations, we investigate the channel capacities at 15 and 28 GHz for a number of different array processing techniques, including beamforming, spatial multiplexing, and two types of hybrid beamforming. This is done for an 8x32 multipl

Measurement of the inclusive and fiducial tt¯ production cross-sections in the lepton+jets channel in pp collisions at √s=8TeV with the ATLAS detector

The inclusive and fiducial tt¯ production cross-sections are measured in the lepton+jets channel using 20.2fb-1 of proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Major systematic uncertainties due to the modelling of the jet energy scale and b-tagging efficiency are constrained by separating selected events into three disjoint regions.

Nano and micro structured targets to modulate the spatial profile of laser driven proton beams

Nano and micro structured thin (μ m-scale) foils were designed, fabricated and irradiated with the high intensity laser system operating at LLC (Lund Laser Centre, Sweden) in order to systematically study and improve the main proton beam parameters. Nano-spheres deposited on the front (laser irradiated) surface of a flat Mylar foil enabled a small enhancement of the maximum energy and number of th

Modelling and simulation of a coal-fired power plant for start-up optimisation

The increased impact from fluctuating energy sources like wind and photovoltaics significantly affects the operational regime of conventional power plants. In the near future, even former base load power plants such as the large-scale lignite plants in Germany will need to start and shut down to balance the electricity system. As frequent starts were not in the focus of optimisation in the past, a

Changes, Problems, and Challenges in Swedish Spatial Planning—An Analysis of Power Dynamics

During the past few decades, the Swedish spatial planning system has experienced numerous problems and challenges. In particular, there have been changes in legislation and an increased neoliberalisation of planning that gives private actors a larger influence over the planning processes in Sweden. In this article, we analyse these changes through the lenses of collaborative and neoliberal planninDuring the past few decades, the Swedish spatial planning system has experienced numerous problems and challenges. Acquisition and extinction of gene expression programs are separable events in heterokaryon reprogramming

Although differentiated cells normally retain cell-type-specific gene expression patterns throughout their lifetime, cell identity can sometimes be modified or reversed in vivo by transdifferentiation, or experimentally through cell fusion or by nuclear transfer. To examine the epigenetic changes that are required for the dominant conversion of lymphocytes to muscle, we generated heterokaryons bet

The role of affective meaning, semantic associates, and orthographic neighbours in modulating the N400 in single words

The N400 has been seen to be larger for concrete thanabstract words, and for pseudowords than real words. Using a word vectoranalysis to calculate semantic associates (SA), as well as ratings foremotional arousal (EA), and a measure of orthographic neighbourhood (ON), thepresent study investigated the relation between these factors and N400 amplitudes during a lexical decision task usingSwedish wo

Annotating speaker stance in discourse : The Brexit Blog Corpus

The aim of this study is to explore the possibility of identifying speaker stance in discourse, provide an analytical resource for it and an evaluation of the level of agreement across speakers in the area of stance-taking in discourse. We explore to what extent language users agree about what kind of stances are expressed in natural language use or whether their interpretations diverge. In order
