Rising Seas and Rising Tensions – Exploring the Failure to Implement Flooding Regulations in a Swedish Municipality

Rising sea levels and continuous coastal development increase vulnerability to flooding in southern Sweden. National regulations try to increase local consideration of flooding in urban planning, but so far implementation is limited. The aim of this thesis is to understand the lack of implementation and explore how and why implementation failed in a Swedish municipality. In order to study the case

Det komplexa medborgarskapet - Om myndighetsföreträdarens makt och individens frihet i tillämpningen av LSS-lagen

The principle aim of the Law on Support and Service for people with Certain Functional Impairments (LSS) is to guarantee full participation in society and freedom to choose one’s own path in life. These are ambitious goals; however, they lack both precision and reference to daily care work. Through 17 qualitative interviews with caregivers working in group homes for disabled, this thesis examines

Local CTLA4 blockade effectively restrains experimental pancreatic adenocarcinoma growth in vivo.

Antibody-mediated blockade of CTLA4 has been shown to be effective in treating a select group of patients with late-stage melanoma. The precise mechanism underlying the clinical activity of CTLA4 immunotherapy is poorly understood, although recent experimental findings indicate that antibody-mediated depletion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the tumor microenvironment plays a key role in efficaci

Multitask Convolutional Neural Network Emulators for Global Crop Models - Supervised Deep Learning in Large Hypercubes of Non-IID Data

The aim of this thesis is to establish whether a neural network (NN) can be used for emulation of simulated global crop production - retrieved from the computationally demanding dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM) Lund-Potsdam-Jena General Ecosystem Simulator (LPJ-GUESS). It has been devoted to elaboration with various types of neural network architectures: Branched NNs capable of processing in

Studies of bacterial surface proteins interacting with the immune system

Proteiner ingår också som viktiga beståndsdelar i vävnaderna mellan cellerna och finns dessutomPathogenic bacteria express a wide array of surface proteins that interact with the environment. Many of these proteins are believed to be important for the virulence. This thesis deals with the binding of immunoglobulins (Ig) and complement regulating proteins to certain bacterial surface proteins. Protein L from Peptostreptococcus magnus binds to Igk-light chains while protein A from Staphylococ

Eosinophils in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody associated vasculitis

Background: Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies associated vasculitides (AAV) are characterized by autoimmune small vessel inflammation. Eosinophils are multifunctional cells with both pro-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties. Tissue activated eosinophils secrete cyto- and chemokines and form extracellular traps (EETs), they release free granules and produce reactive oxygen species. The

Seed dispersal and fine-scale genetic structuring in the asexual Nigritella miniata (Orchidaceae) in the Alps

Orchids have minute, air-filled seeds and are considered as efficient dispersers and colonizers. Yet, empirical studies show that most seeds fall within the nearest metre from the mother plant in orchids, and that individuals standing close to each other are often closely related. A poor contribution to gene dispersal by seeds may be compensated for by more efficient dispersal by pollen, but in auOrchids have minute, air-filled seeds and are considered to be efficient dispersers and colonizers. Heredity of small hard drusen in twins aged 20-46 years

Abstract PURPOSE: To examine the prevalence and heredity of small hard drusen in 220 healthy twins aged 20-46 years. METHODS: Grayscale digital fundus photography, four-field 50 degrees nonstereoscopic, in red-free illumination was performed in 58 pairs of monozygotic (MZ) twins and 52 pairs of dizygotic (DZ) twins as part of a detailed biometric characterization. Circulating Human Basophils and Dendritic Cell Subsets. Aspects of antigen recognition and presentation in type I allergic immune responses

Genom att studera dessa mekanismer kan man hitta sätt att angripa dem, vilket förhoppningsvis kan leda till bättre lAllergic diseases currently affect a third of the population in the industrialized parts of the world. Despite this, the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the induction and activation of allergic diseases are not fully clarified. Dendritic cells (DCs) link the innate and adaptive immunity and play vital roles in protective immunity against pathogens, as well as in inducing tolerance t

IL1RAP Blockade with a Monoclonal Antibody Reduces Cardiac Inflammation and Preserves Heart Function in Viral and Autoimmune Myocarditis

BACKGROUND: Currently, there are no therapies targeting specific pathogenic pathways in myocarditis. IL (interleukin)-1 blockade has shown promise in preclinical studies and case reports. We hypothesized that blockade of IL1RAP (IL-1 receptor accessory protein), a shared subunit of the IL-1, IL-33, and IL-36 receptors, could be more efficient than IL-1 blockade alone. METHODS: We induced coxsackie
