Mobile map client API : design and implementation for Android

The fast development of computational power of the mobile phone makes it a suitable platform for running map applications. Both public and field working professionals can benefit from easy access to a mobile map client application with features such as route planning, location based services and simple GIS operations. This master's thesis describes the mobile operating system (OS) Android from

Identification of sources of ammonium in groundwater using stable nitrogen and boron isotopes in Nam Du, Hanoi

In this study high concentrations of ammonium (NH₄⁺) and arsenic (As) in groundwater are investigated in the Nam Du well-field, Hanoi, Vietnam. Arsenic is unwanted in drinking water since it has severe consequences for human health. High concentrations of ammonium in groundwater, while not directly harmful to human health, is often a sign of the groundwater being affected by anthropogenic activiti

Temporary neonatal exposure to whole and hydrolysed cow's milk proteins. Studies of macromolecular absorption and immunological variables

Påverkan på makromolekylär absorption, antikropps produktionThe aim of this work was to study prospectively the effects of different feeding regimens during the first three days of life. A group of 129 infants were randomly assigned at birth to one of three feeding regimens: human milk (HM), cow's milk formula (CMF), or a casein hydrolysate formula (CHF). The formula-fed infants received no human milk until the fourth day of life, after which all infants w

Cerebrospinal fluid Alzheimer's disease biomarkers across the spectrum of lewy body diseases : Results from a large multicenter cohort

Background: Concomitant Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is observed in Lewy body diseases (LBD), but the clinical impact is unknown. Only a few biomarker studies in LBD exist and have included small cohorts from single centers. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AD biomarkers across the spectrum of LBD in a large multicenter cohort and to assess

Phytoplankton diversity loss along a gradient of future warming and brownification in freshwater mesocosms

Globally, freshwater ecosystems are warming at unprecedented rates and northern temperate lakes are simultaneously experiencing increased runoff of humic substances (brownification), with little known consequences for future conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. We employed an outdoor mesocosm experiment during spring and summer to investigate the combined effects of gradually in

The modified Glasgow Prognostic Score indicates an increased risk of anastomotic leakage after anterior resection for rectal cancer

Background: Preoperative inflammation might cause and also be a marker for anastomotic leakage after anterior resection for rectal cancer. Available biomarker indices such as the modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) or the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) may be clinically useful for leakage assessment. Methods: Patients who underwent anterior resection for rectal cancer during 2014–2

Prolonged and intense neuroinflammation after severe traumatic brain injury assessed by cerebral microdialysis with 300 kDa membranes

Background: A neuroinflammatory response that may lead to edema and secondary brain damage is elicited in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Previous studies using microdialysis (MD) membranes with 100 k Dalton (kDa) cut-off found a transient intracerebral release of cytokines and chemokines without significant correlations to clinical course, intracranial pressure (ICP) or metabolites. In this

Perceived Adverse Effects of Separating Government Institutions for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Within the Southern African Development Community Member States

Integration of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) is widely recognized as a solution for reducing the risk and impacts of disasters. However, successful integration seems elusive, and the two goals continue to function in isolation and in parallel. This article provides empirical insights into the perceived effects of separating government institutions for DRR and CC

Sustainable Distribution of Responsibility for Climate Change Adaptation

To gain legitimacy for climate change adaptation decisions, the distribution of responsibility for these decisions and their implementation needs to be grounded in theories of just distribution and what those affected by decisions see as just. The purpose of this project is to contribute to sustainable spatial planning and the ability of local and regional public authorities to make well-informed

Arrhythmias in Older People: Focusing on Atrial Fibrillation. Epidemiology and impact on daily Life.

Older people with arrhythmias comprise a large group requiring complex care, posing many healthcare challenges. Rapid growth of the older population demands a better understanding of the needs of this patient group. The aim of this thesis was to investigate arrhythmia prevalence, incidence, survival, and experiences from the perspective of a geriatric population (aged 60+ years), and to examine th

No independent association between pulse wave velocity and dementia : a population-based, prospective study

OBJECTIVE:: Carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (CFPWV), a marker of aortic stiffness, has been associated with cognitive test results and markers of cerebral small vessel disease, but its association with dementia has not been studied in detail. Our aim was to assess the association of CFPWV with prevalent and incident dementia in a large population-based study. METHODS:: In total, CFPWV was meas

Cerebrospinal fluid soluble TREM2 in aging and Alzheimer's disease

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology is associated with neuroinflammation, but there are few useful biomarkers. Mutant variants of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) have recently been linked to late-onset AD and other neurodegenerative disorders. TREM2, a microglial receptor, is involved in innate immunity. A cleaved fragment, soluble TREM2 (sTREM2), is presen

Placenta-associated adverse pregnancy outcomes in women experiencing mild or severe hyperemesis gravidarum – a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) affects 50–80% of pregnant women and is correlated to the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe condition, with an incidence of 0.2–1.5%, characterized by consistent nausea, vomiting, weight loss and dehydration continuing after the second trimester. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to inves

Pediatric noncompaction patients with high spatial QRS-T angles are at increased risk for ventricular tachycardia

Introduction: Noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM) patients may develop sustained ventricular arrhythmias (VA). Currently no known electrocardiogram (ECG) parameter has demonstrated predictive value for VA development. The spatial QRS-T angle has demonstrated ability to identify VA in other cardiomyopathy populations. Methods: A total of 39 patients with NCCM, defined by compact to non-compact rati
