Institutions' Role in Promoting a Competitive Market

This paper aims to examine whether competition law and policies have greater effect on competition when sound institutions are in place. Reports by major global actors as well as governmental reforming, show that there is unanimity on the notion that political reforming is essential in order to reach a more competitive market. Later economic research shows that institutions such as governance effe

Exploring trends, implications and challenges for logistics information systems in omni-channels : Swedish retailers’ perception

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the current trends, implications and challenges of information systems (IS) related to omni-channel logistics. Design/methodology/approach: An exploratory survey study is conducted with 23 Swedish retail companies transforming to omni-channel logistics. The study investigates the retailers’ current situations regarding logistics IS as well as their

Vibrations in a Built Environment : Prediction and Reduction

Vibrations in a built environment can exceed the requirements for sensitive equipment in a building or can cause annoyance to residents. Hence, there is often a need for reducing such vibrations. The vibrations can originate from ambient sources such as motorway traffic, or from internal sources such as people walking inside the building. Disturbing vibrations can be reduced by reduction measures.

Atrocity Media: Negotiating the Abject in Images of Torture and Death

This essay discusses the dissemination of atrocity images in contemporary mass media, from the photographs of mass-graves in the Nazi concentration camps to the pictures of torture of Iraqi prisoners in Abu Ghraib. The central question is one of distances: the distance between the image and the event, between the picture and the beholder, and between the destroyed human body and the cultural forms

NMR studies on calcium-induced conformational transitions in calmodulin

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used in order to investigate the relationships between structure, dynamics and calcium binding in the intracellular regulatory protein, calmodulin. Calmodulin consists of two similar domains, each binding two calcium ions with positive cooperativity. The studies described in this thesis focus on the isolated C-terminal domain, TR2C, and two mutants

Kinetics of Carbon Monoxide Exchange in Chloro and Bromo Carbonyl Complexes of Palladium(II) and Platinum(II)

Carbonyl exchange between [MX3(13CO)]–(MX = PdCl, PtCl or PtBr) and 12CO has been studied by IR and 13C NMR spectroscopies as a function of temperature. The exchange is first-order in both CO and complex concentration, and the activation entropies are negative, suggesting an associative reaction mechanism. There is a small solvent effect, but no chloride dependence. Activation parameters and rate Carbonyl exchange between [MX(3)((CO)-C-13)](-) (MX = PdCl, PtCl or PtBr) and (CO)-C-12 has been studied by IR and C-13 NMR spectroscopies as a function of temperature. The exchange is first-order in both CO and complex concentration, and the activation entropies are negative, suggesting an associative reaction mechanism. There is a small solvent effect. but no chloride dependence. Activation para

Translational studies on acute myeloid leukemia focus on the receptor tyrosine kinase FLT3

Among adults, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the second most frequent type of leukemia. In spite of recent improvements in the treatment of this disease, a majority of patients develop drug resistance, leading to poor overall survival. One of the factors behind this is mutations in the tyrosine kinase receptor (FLT3). It is one of the most commonly mutated genes and is present in almost 40% of th

Wind-associated detours promote seasonal migratory connectivity in a flapping flying long-distance avian migrant

It is essential to gain knowledge about the causes and extent of migratory connectivity between stationary periods of migrants to further the understanding of processes affecting populations, and to allow efficient implementation of conservation efforts throughout the annual cycle. Avian migrants likely use optimal routes with respect to mode of locomotion, orientation and migration strategy, infl

Evaluating the Potential of Southampton Carbon Flux Model (SCARF) for Monitoring Terrestrial Gross Primary Productivity Across African Ecosystems

Accurate knowledge about the amount and dynamics of terrestrial gross primary productivity is an important component for understanding of ecosystem functioning and processes. Recently a new diagnostic model, Southampton Carbon Flux (SCARF), was developed to predict terrestrial gross primary productivity at regional to global scale based on a chlorophyll index derived from MERIS data. The model aim

IMPACT OF STRENGTH-ENHANCING ADMIXTURES ON STABILIZATION OF EXPANSIVE SOIL BY ADDITION OF ALTERNATIVE BINDERS

In this study, the stabilization process is introduced to a clayey expansive soil collected in southern Sweden. The tests examined strength parameters of expansive soil stabilized by different binders using combination of both traditional binders (cement and lime) and alternative materials (slag Merit 5000, fly ash from SCA Lilla Edet and fly ash from coal combustion, ISO certified). The practical

Greek collections of the Apophthegmata Patrum as found in Scorialensis R.II.1 and related manuscripts

The so called Collectio Scorialensis parva is an unedited alphabetical collection of stories about Egypti an desert fathers. It is found in two Greek MSS: Scorialensis R.II.1 and Parisinus gr. 919. They also contain a larger collection of the Apophthegmata Patrum, the so called alphabetica - anonyma derivata. Other manuscripts preserve this latter collection in a later stage, where all or parts of

Moisture levels and drying potential of the concrete in Swedish reactor containments

The climatic conditions inside nuclear reactor containments are continuously monitored by the plant owners in order to e.g. maintain a suitable climate for the mechanical and electrical equipment. Due to the high temperatures, during operation, the concrete within the containment may act as a moisture source contributing to the humidity. To evaluate if, and to what extent, the concrete inside the
