The energy consumption when using powered flight increases rapidly with body mass and is therefore mainly used by the smaller raptors, such as Falcons, Sparrowhawks and Harriers. Soaring and gliding flight are mainly used by the larger raptors such as Buzzards, Kites and Eagles. When using so

Climate change is predicted to lead to an increase in the frequency and severity of climate extremes and variability (IPCC 2007). The result is an increase in climate-related disasters in a world where, even without climate change, the number of disasters is already on the rise (UNISDR 2010). Also Sweden will be severely affected by climate change as temperatures are expected to rise more in North

It examines the role played by civil society actors in the internalization of human right

Ironically, this is true even for prehistoric games, where the Icelandic sagas have been used as a starting point for a deductive hunt for the mysterious game Hnefatafl. Later studies of gaming have to a large extent been transferring older research results. According to the author, this has created a rather skewed pictu

Biological aerosol particles affect human health, are essential for microbial and gene dispersal, and have been proposed as important agents for atmospheric processes. However, the abundance and size distributions of atmospheric biological particles are largely unknown. In this study we used a laser-induced fluorescence instrument to measure fluorescent biological aerosol particle (FBAP) concentra

"The Sixties." The powerful images conveyed by those two words have become an enduring part of American cultural and political history. But where did Sixties radicalism come from? Who planted the intellectual seeds that brought it into being? These questions are answered with striking clarity in Andrew Jamison and Ron Eyerman's book. Vegetation fire is one of the naturally occurring disturbances within the Earth system, changing vegetation dynamics and modulating carbon storage in the terrestrial biosphere. While fires are essential to many ecosystems, fire dynamics have been increasingly shaped by human actions since the late eighteenth century. The main drivers behind those changes are climate change and direct human activit

The role of the intermediate filament protein desmin in hypertrophy of smooth muscle was examined in desmin deficient mice (Des -/-). A partial obstruction of the urethra was created and after 9-19 days bladder weight increased about 3-fold in both Des -/- and wild type (Des +/+) animals. Bladder growth was associated with synthesis of actin and myosin. In the hypertrophic Des +/+ bladder the rela
