Verksamheten möjliggörs av frivilliga laThis is the sixth annual report of the Swedish Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, a national monitoring programme coordinated by Lund University for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency since 2010. The programme is a partnership between the Entomological Society of Sweden, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Lund University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the Swedish

Development of boosted machine learning models for estimating daily reference evapotranspiration and comparison with empirical approaches

Proper irrigation scheduling and agricultural water management require a precise estimation of crop water requirement. In practice, reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is firstly estimated, and used further to calculate the evapotranspiration of each crop. In this study, two new coupled models were developed for estimating daily ETo. Two optimization algorithms, the shuffled frog-leaping algorithm

Modularisation strategies in the AEC industry : a comparative analysis

Many industries have benefited from modularisation; while in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, the concept of modularisation is associated with dimensional coordination. This has added to an already extensive list of challenges due to market size and the concept of economies of scale in AEC industry, to name but a few. Moreover, there is a myth that the AEC industry is

Exploring and improving NOAA AVHRR NDVI image quality for African Drylands

The accuracy of NOAA AVHRR NDVI maximum value composites can be poor due to interference from several sources, including cloud cover. The objectives of this paper are; 1. to accurately quantify noise in this imagery over Africa using geostatistics, and 2. to test four compositing techniques that may be able to reduce this noise. The nugget of the variogram model is used to compute standardized noi

Seeing in the dark: vision and visual behaviour in nocturnal bees and wasps.

In response to the pressures of predation, parasitism and competition for limited resources, several groups of (mainly) tropical bees and wasps have independently evolved a nocturnal lifestyle. Like their day-active (diurnal) relatives, these insects possess apposition compound eyes, a relatively light-insensitive eye design that is best suited to vision in bright light. Despite this, nocturnal be

Implementation of IS Security Standards on Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

This thesis addresses the issue of Information Systems (IS) security in pharmaceutical manufacturing which is closely related to the ISA 99 standard. The ISA 99 'Security for industrial Automation and Control Systems' standard is focused on the work for securing process automation systems from IS security threats. The main thought behind the ISA 99 standard is that a high level of IS secur

Enhancement of loop heat pipe performance with the application of micro/nano hybrid structures

To further improve the flat-type loop heat pipe (LHP) performance, this study evaluates the practical potential of use of highly enhanced boiling structures. It is found that in our proposed new heat pipe (NHP) system, the working fluid from the evaporator outlet to the condenser inlet is in a liquid–vapor two phase flow, which is different from the classical LHP theory. A new P-T diagram is devel

Science with the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), will be the major global observatoryfor very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy over the next decadeand beyond. The scientific potential of CTA is extremely broad: fromunderstanding the role of relativistic cosmic particles to the search for darkmatter. CTA is an explorer of the extreme universe, probing environmentsfrom the immediate neighbourhood of black

Understanding environmental performance variation in manufacturing companies

Purpose: Sustainability is an area of increasing interest for industry and its stakeholders, and some companies now aspire to address sustainability issues (e.g. carbon emissions) at strategic and operational levels. As companies are exploring the issues, they attempt to embed sustainability in their planning and management systems. It is at this point that the domains of environmental concern and

A robust Multi-Band Water Index (MBWI) for automated extraction of surface water from Landsat 8 OLI imagery

Surface water is vital resources for terrestrial life, while the rapid development of urbanization results in diverse changes in sizes, amounts, and quality of surface water. To accurately extract surface water from remote sensing imagery is very important for water environment conservations and water resource management. In this study, a new Multi-Band Water Index (MBWI) for Landsat 8 Operational

Structural basis of inhibition of the human serine hydroxymethyltransferase SHMT2 by antifolate drugs

Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is the major source of 1-carbon units required for nucleotide synthesis. Humans have cytosolic (SHMT1) and mitochondrial (SHMT2) isoforms, which are upregulated in numerous cancers, making the enzyme an attractive drug target. Here, we show that the antifolates lometrexol and pemetrexed are inhibitors of SHMT2 and solve the first SHMT2-antifolate structures.

Soil N chemistry in oak forests along a nitrogen deposition gradient

Anthropogenic N deposition may change soil conditions in forest ecosystems as demonstrated in many studies of coniferous forests, whereas results from deciduous forests are relatively scarce. Therefore the influence of N deposition on several variables was studied in situ in 45 oak-dominated deciduous forests along a N deposition gradient in southern Sweden, where the deposition ranged from 10 to

Reductive cleavage of the O-O bond in multicopper oxidases: a QM/MM and QM study

The key step in the reaction mechanism of multicopper oxidases (MCOs)-the cleavage of the O-O bond in O-2-has been investigated using combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) methods. This process represents a reaction pathway from the peroxy intermediate after it accepts one electron from the nearby type-1 Cu site to the experimentally-observed native intermediate, which is th

A glucose dehydrogenase biosensor as an additional signal amplification step in an enzyme-flow immunoassay.

Both the antibody affinity and the detectability of the label are essential in deciding the final characteristics of a heterogeneous immunoassay. This paper describes an approach to obtain a supplementary enhancement of the signal generated by using an enzyme label, e.g., by including the product of the enzymatic reaction in an additional amplification cycle during the detection step performed wit

Fine Mapping the Spatial Distribution and Concentration of Unlabeled Drugs within Tissue Micro-Compartments Using Imaging Mass Spectrometry

Readouts that define the physiological distributions of drugs in tissues are an unmet challenge and at best imprecise, but are needed in order to understand both the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties associated with efficacy. Here we demonstrate that it is feasible to follow the in vivo transport of unlabeled drugs within specific organ and tissue compartments on a platform that appli
