Researchers reprogram tumor cells into cancer-fighting immune cells in living beings

Researchers at Lund University are developing a new type of gene therapy that reprograms cancer cells within tumors into immune cells that can help the immune system fight cancer. Their approach, now published in the journal Science, could lead to more effective treatments for hard-to-treat cancers. Reprogramming Cancer Cells into Immune Cells Earlier research by the team showed that three special

New research maps how and where people resist climate adaptation

Why do some people oppose interventions meant to protect them from climate hazards, and what forms of resistance are available to those most vulnerable and exposed? These questions are explored in a new literature study from LUCSUS that maps where people resist climate adaptation; how, and in what contexts. It shows that resistance to adaptation occurs overtly and covertly, in both low-income and

Companies risk misjudging their impact on biodiversity

Which natural areas should be protected, and which can be developed? Biodiversity indicators can help companies make more sustainable decisions. But only nine per cent of the world’s largest companies in sectors with a major impact on nature use such indicators, according to a new study from Lund University. The researchers also provide seven recommendations for the future use of biodiversity indi

UN conference: Is it time for biodiversity to take centre stage?

Just over two weeks after the UN climate summit in Egypt, the leaders of the world’s countries are meeting again, this time to address another acute crisis facing humanity – the loss of biodiversity. The issue is less well-known than the climate crisis and no framework corresponding to the Paris agreement is in place – something that many people hope the December summit in Montreal will rectify. Pain relief without side effects with promising technique

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have developed a completely new stimulation method, using ultra-thin microelectrodes, to combat severe pain. This provides effective and personalised pain relief without the common side effects from pain relief drugs. The study, which was conducted on rats, has been published in the research journal Science Advances. The lack of a side effect-free treatment

Using light to create bioelectronics inside the body

Bioelectronics research and development of implants made of electrically conductive materials for disease treatment is advancing rapidly. However, bioelectronic treatment is not without complications. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have taken another step forward by developing a refined method to create detailed and tissue-friendly bioelectronics. In a study published in Advanced Science

Capturing the moment a cell shuts the door on free radicals

For the first time, researchers have been able to show how a cell closes the door to free radicals – small oxygen molecules that are sometimes needed, but that can also damage our cells. The study is published in Nature Communications and was led from Lund University. For our cells to function, they need to maintain a careful balance between beneficial and harmful oxygen molecules known as free ra

New blood test for detecting Alzheimer’s disease

Researchers from Lund University, together with the Roche pharmaceutical company, have used a method to develop a new blood marker capable of detecting whether or not a person has Alzheimer’s disease. If the method is approved for clinical use, the researchers hope eventually to see it used as a diagnostic tool in primary healthcare. This autumn, they will start a trial in primary healthcare to te
