Pancreatic tissue grafting is by far the most physiological therapeutic solution to the insulin deficiency of diabetes. Recent clinical trials have indicated somewhat successful use of nonsteroidal immunosuppressive regimens and a successful nonhuman primate trial using CD154 for costimulation blockade was reported. However, these protocols need to be replaced with safe and efficacious ones in whi

We explore here, through three complementary experiments on virtual objects, how intimate active relations with multisensory audio-visual and haptics perceptions allow to the cognitive creation of new believable and plausible objects that can be different of the virtual ones objectively implemented. The three experiments are based on "Pebble Boxes" and consist in the exploration and the manipulati

An association between Helicobacter infection and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in children was investigated. The prevalence of antibodies to H. pylori did not differ between the AIH and the control group, (22% versus 14%), and antibodies to non-gastric Helicobacter were not detected in either group. H. pylori DNA was found in two AIH liver tissues, but Helicobacter was not cultured from any sample.

PURPOSE: Helicobacter pylori is a human gastroduodenal pathogen associated with type-B gastritis and gastric cancer. Low gastric tissue antioxidant levels are believed to increase the risk of developing gastric cancer. We investigated whether dietary antioxidant levels protect against infection and type-B gastritis in H. pylori-infected guinea pigs. METHODS: Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs infected for

Background Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death from malignant disease among men in the developed world. One strategy to decrease the risk of death from this disease is screening with prostate-specific antigen (PSA); however, the extent of benefit and harm with such screening is under continuous debate. Methods In December, 1994, 20 000 men born between 1930 and 1944, randomly sam

Over the last decades, many liberal democracies have experienced a tension between the education system’s expressed requirement to foster citizenship norms and the liberal (sub-) ideal of norm neutrality. This dilemma has been accentuated by, on the one hand, increased ethnical and cultural diversity, and, on the other hand, liberalization of society in general and the schooling system in particul

Objective To determine whether BCG revaccination at 19 months of age reduces overall child mortality. Design Randomised trial, with follow-up to age 5. Setting A health project in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, which maintains a health and demographic surveillance system in an urban area with 90 000 inhabitants. Participants 2871 children aged 19 months to 5 years with low or no reactivity to tuberculin a

Wnt5a is a non-canonical Wnt protein that is expressed at elevated levels in inflammatory conditions. Its role in inflammation remains unclear, although it is known that Wnt5a is expressed at a higher level in monocyte-derived myeloid dendritic cells (Mo-mDCs) than in monocytes and macrophages. The function of Wnt5a in dendritic cells (DCs) remains relatively unexplored. Here, we found that under

Land degradation, as a threat to smallholders in the tropics, attracts less attention than other global challenges. In addition, gaps between scientific understandings of land degradation and international policy regimes are problematic. We identify the three most significant debates including their different policy implications: desertification in the Sahel, nutrient depletion in Africa, and rura

The prevalence of HCV genotypes in four republics of the former Soviet Union (Russia, Belarus, Moldova, and Uzbekistan) was investigated. Overall, 197 HCV isolates from 66 blood donors and 131 patients with chronic hepatitis were typed. Viral sequences from sera of infected subjects were amplified by nested RT-PCR using primers from the core region and typed by one or two techniques: (1) DNA enzym

The paper is based on a joint research project between Lund University and Copenhagen Business School. The main research question is: Can the Oresund region position itself as a leading logistics centre in Scandinavia in light of the new conditions created by the bridge? The purpose is to create a fundamental understanding of the new logistics conditions in the Oresund region by identifying driver

P>Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of cancer. The present study describes TLR expression and function in healthy and malignant airway epithelial cells. The squamous cell carcinoma cell line Detroit-562 was compared with the healthy bronchial epithelial cell line NL-20 and primary human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs). TLR2, TLR3 and TLR5 were present in pri

Purpose Radiation therapy is frequently used in treating different types of tumors, although associated with serious side effects, such as fibrosis and complicated diarrhea. This study was designed to define the adhesive mechanisms behind radiotherapy-induced leukocyte recruitment in the colon. Methods All mice, except control animals, were radiated with a single dose of 20 Gy. Mice were pretreate

The genetic basis of complete C4 deficiency in a patient with SLE was investigated. Previous studies have demonstrated that this patient has two different major histocompatibility complex (MHC) haplotypes that each contain a major deletion and a non-expressed C4 gene. In the present study, non-expression of the C4 genes was explained by the finding of two distinct C4 gene mutations. A previously d

In October 1998 Stockholm County launched a 3-year vaccination campaign with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV-23) directed towards all elderly persons. We analysed the impact of this campaign on the incidence and serotype distribution of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in Stockholm County, where the vaccine coverage was 36%, as compared to Skane County, where no vaccinati

Aim To investigate the association between psychosocial conditions at work, unemployment and self-reported psychological health. Methods A cross-sectional postal questionnaire for the 2000 public health survey in Scania was administered to both working and unemployed people aged 18–64 years. Logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between psychosocial factors at work/u
