CO2 emission impacts of introducing heavier and longer trucks in the Swedish transport system

In recent years the possibility to increase maximum length and weight of heavy goods vehicles to allow for High Capacity Vehicles (HCVs) has been debated in Sweden. Proposals to increase maximum weight to 74 tonnes, and length to 34m have caused controversy. Key arguments among proponents are that HCVs will bring about benefits, such as: increasing energy efficiency and decreasing CO 2 emissions,

Antigenic and biochemical characteristics of Mobiluncus mulieris and Mobiluncus curtisii

Twenty-four strains of Mobiluncus mulieris and 27 strains of Mobiluncus curtisii were tested with respect to 6 different biochemical characteristics: arginin-decarboxylase activity, beta-galactosidase activity, synergistic hemolysis with Staphylococcus aureus, hydrolysis of hippurate, migration through soft agar and reduction of nitrate. Antigens of the same strains, prepared by ultrasonication, w

Stellar escapers from M67 can reach solar-like Galactic orbits

We investigate the possibility that the Sun could have been born in M67 by carrying out N-body simulations of M67-like clusters in a time-varying Galactic environment, and following the Galactic orbits of stars that escape from them. We find that model clusters that occupy similar orbits to M67 today can be divided up into three groups, which we call hot, depleted, and scattered clusters. Hot clus

Exceptional points in anisotropic photonic structures : From non-Hermitian physics to possible device applications

We demonstrate that exceptional points exist in fully transparent, optically "effectively" biaxial, anisotropic micro-cavities, fabricated using an uniaxial cavity material with its axis inclined to the Bragg mirror growth direction. This is similar to the existence of singular (optic) axes in absorbing biaxial crystals, but the lack of time reversal symmetry is mediated by the mode broadening, i.

Identification and quantification of degradome components in human synovial fluid reveals an increased proteolytic activity in knee osteoarthritis patients vs controls

Synovial fluid (SF) may contain cleavage products of proteolytic activities. Our aim was to characterize the degradome through analysis of proteolytic activity and differential abundance of these components in a peptidomic analysis of SF in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients versus controls (n = 23). SF samples from end-stage knee osteoarthritis patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery an

How Does Enterprise Social Media (ESM) Influence Newcomers’ Socialization: A Multilevel Perspective

Socialization plays an essential role in ensuring that newcomers to an organization enjoy greater productivity and also integrate well into their workgroups. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, enterprise social media (ESM) is increasingly being used in organizations as an informal socialization tool. However, the effectiveness of these tools in affording the necessary socialization opportunities and ena

Interleukin 16 in Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease

Background and aim - The development of clinical manifectations due to an eroded or ruptured atherosclerotic plaque, or occluded vessel, are one of the major causes of death world wide. It has been known for some time that atherosclerosis develops due to retention and modification of LDL particles in the vessel wall and the subsequent triggering of the immune system. The research presented within

Students’ and Teachers’ Experience of Globalization/Internationalization ‘of’ Higher Education - Emphasizing a pedagogical stance in an internationalized teaching and learning context

The conclusions in this paper are drawn from the results of four empirical studies. It has been important to take an empirical approach in the investigation, concerned with internationalization of higher education, since even though plentiful of studies over the last decades have been concerned with internationalization in/of higher education, it has not been from the perspectives from the teacher

Use of environmental requirements in the supply chain relations: some experiences from Poland and Sweden.

Growing number of ISO 14001 certifications worldwide creates new possibilities for organizations to benefits from the global recognition of the standard. One of them is unequivocally the use of ISO14001 certificate as one of conditions for supply chain cooperation. Such situation pulls many enterprises into implementation of the systems for the bare reason of fulfilling the requirement, abreast to

Energy management in Swedish pulp and paper industry - the daily grind that matters

The Swedish pulp and paper industry (PPI) accounts for almost 50 percent of industrial final energy use. It is an energy-intensive industry and process optimization is seen as prerequisite to compete on the global market. This alone should motivate company boards and on-site organisations to put energy management high on the agenda. Definitely, from time to time, energy issues (e.g. fuel shifts, s

Hardware architecture for matrix factorization in MIMO receivers

This paper presents the hardware realization of the factorization algorithm required in a MIMO OFDM receiver to make the detection and decoding a non-orthogonal space-time code. Requirements of a real scenario represented by the standard IEEE 802.11n for WLAN have been analyzed and exploited to draw out the specifications of the proposed implementation. A very high throughput hardware realization

Bridging and breaking silos : Transformational governance of the migration-sustainability nexus

Sustainability and migration are typically treated as discrete policy spheres in international, national, and local fora, separated in governance structures and institutions. This results in policy incoherence that hinders just transitions toward more sustainable societies cognizant of mobile realities. This explorative effort identifies the (dis)connections between policy domains using data colle

Dual-binary phase gratings for x-ray interferometry

X-ray phase-contrast imaging by grating interferometry has in the past decades been established both at synchrotron radiation sources and at conventional x-ray tubes. Due to the sensitivity to x-ray phase shifting, contrast in soft tissue has been improved significantly and the possibilities to do virtual histology of tissue biopsies are being pioneered. Constraints in the design of a grating inte

Convex Hulls and Triangulations of Planar Point Sets on the Congested Clique.

We consider geometric problems on planar n2-point sets in the congested clique model. Initially, each node in the n-clique network holds a batch of n distinct points in the Euclidean plane given by Ο(log n)-bit coordinates. Ineach round, each node can send a distinct Ο(log n)-bit message to each other node in the clique and perform unlimited local computations. We show that the convex hull of the
